"YOUR PERFECT COMP"

I'd like to know if you could get everything in your perfect comp what would it include! Prices, PRIZES, amount of people, food, everything .. I thought this could be an interesting topic with all the talks about the best compeition companies!

RE: "YOUR PERFECT COMP"

One where there was no drama and we all got along and sang kum by yah ... LOL

No punches were thrown, no snide comments were made, and no one was trying to intimidate anyone.

Truthfully, one where there is a good amount of competition, yet isn't a marathon. Perhaps reasonable awards ceremonies. It is also fun when the girls get to walk away with something even if it is just a medal or ribbon or t-shirt.

They would have escorts for the parents to their sections. They would have pillows and massagers for our backs LOL

Honestly, I think more entertainment from the organization that includes the crowd. I loved the food they served at Americas Best.. Terriyaki Bowls, Etc.

Since I just posted about videotaping at Athletic Championships next weekend, I'll say that all competitions should allow it, no exception. If families want to purchase one done professionally, that should be their choice, they shouldn't be forced into it.

And reasonable prices of admission. We've already paid for our child to compete, why try to squeeze us for more just for the privilege to watch? Make it reasonable so more family members can attend. We're a large family and I have nieces that cheer on various teams in the bay area; I would love to see all their competitions without paying a fortune.

Oh, and I agree about good food choices (like that teriyaki bowl that was mentioned.. that was yummy and a nice change from hot dogs and nachos)!

RE: "YOUR PERFECT COMP"

  • at least four competitors
  • enough seating
  • the company not allow people to sit in the aisle way or walk through during a performance
  • yes to video and picture (I'm fine with not allowing flash)
  • the ability to purchase the video and pics at the comp as well as later online
  • better & more food choices (the tough thing with this is when a company does offer fruit, it's not exactly flying off the shelf)
  • the judging always takes too long (however, since I'm not in on how it's done, I don't know how to change it)
  • awards - only announce top three, include scores
  • NO to the JAMZ style of "putting on a show", if you are going to do this, change it for each break...thinking back to last years nationals where I had to see/hear the exact same performance three times in one day
  • earliest start 8a, latest end 10p (by end I'm talking about leaving the competition, not just the performances, now we have to sit through 2 hours of awards)
  • everyone gets a little something, I like medals, pins, patches or the charm idea (but I don't think they work for the guys)

okay, this is all of the top of my head, so I may have more after I think about it.

Edited: how could I forget this!!!  No dance teams, but if a company wants to have them "combined" do awards after dance or cheer, then start the other, then do their awards.

RE: "YOUR PERFECT COMP"

more awards... tinys and minis, get them out....

youth and ??? get them out

you know what i mean... it would clear up more seats this way too.

Better food. Even though I do enjoy nachos and hot dogs, they are usually disgusting. Not even good dogs and stale chips. the reason they sell them is cause they are easy to make, keep warm and cheap. fine. But don't give us the worst of the worst. I think that places like Subway and the like would do well at these events.

Awards? Hmmmm, LOVED the tiaras and tshirts that each kid got in the goodie bag at ATC. They even got the most recent copy of Inside Cheerleading. Love large trophies and medals for the little ones. That's all they care about.

Hate Hate Hate school competitions. Well, my rear hates them.

And a DJ that doesn't scream at you, talks like you are of moderate intelligence and plays the music so that you can still hear your hubby a week later. when Spirit Sports told us to "deal with it", I thought that was sooooooo rude. And I'm not talking face to face, he came over the mic and told everyone. It was sad.

I think most competitions let you photograph now. Since I am a photographer, I can say that the pricing is pretty steep. Lower those prices everyone. Yea, you need to make money, but you and I both know, it's not THAT expensive. Videographers, get on the ball. It doesn't take THAT LONG to make copies of the product that's already finished......

Anyway, I think these are the age old complaints anyway. I am seeing things getting better though. Cheersport is free to get in to tomorrow. I am really happy about that!!!! But I don't mind paying 5 to 7 dollars..... but anything over that is kinda sad.

RE: "YOUR PERFECT COMP"

1. A schedule that makes sense! None of this minis, then senior lv2, then juniors, dance, then youth etc...

2. Out the door by 10pm.  If it has to go longer, make it 2 days!

3. No walking down the aisle during performances.  This shouldn't even have to be a rule, just common courtesy.

4. A dedicated area for cheerleaders to watch other teams, hang out or whatever, that is not in the prime viewing sections.

5. Sandwiches (although it is not a cheerleading comp if I don't get some Nachos - Tamara, am I right?).

6. Spacious warm-up area!

7. Minimum of 3 teams in each division.  Not enough small senior lv3? combine large and small!

8. Everyone leaving happy and healthy.

RE: "YOUR PERFECT COMP"

I agree with all of the above.

I was pretty upset at the America's Best competition this year - the seating and set up were horrible and to make it even worse, you couldn't go up in front when your team performed.

This is one of the few times when I found myself crouching in the aisles so I could see my team.

It was a bummer because we performed in the morning and by later that afternoon there were ZERO seats upfront - I feel sorry for the teams that performed later that day.

Well, I count proper nachos as good food.  You got your bread, dairy, protein, fruit and fat/oil.  See?  Nearly a well balanced lunch/dinner in one "serving".

I have no idea how I could forget a spectator viewing area!

Pixie gave some good ones for the a good comp from the cheerleaders perspective.  I have no idea what goes on behind the curtain.  Although, I have heard a competition had spring floors for the warm-up area...and that I thought was cool...then again I don't know what goes on back there, so maybe it's common.

I really like the "minimum of 3 teams per category" - I agree, combine categories if there are not enough teams.  I also like the massaging chair suggestion - what a dream...lol.

I agree with all of the suggestions, except one. I have to disagree with combining small and large based on how many gyms have registered and how many end up in a division (like the way America's Best does it). A team of 12 going against a team of 30 is just wrong, in any sport. Nobody can tell me the larger team doesn't have the advantage (though some have tried). There should be a way to handle teams that have the unfortunate luck to have no competition in their division, like to earn first place all teams must have a particular minimum score (this would have to apply to those teams that have competition too). I've heard that this has been done, but I have never seen it in action. So I would add that to the list of a perfect comp. Lots of great suggestions listed!

After returning from a 2-day competition that was overrall VERY good, here's what I would like to add to my wishlist:

  • free schedule - all I want is the b&w sheet of paper that says who's competing and when, I don't want to pay $5 for a slick program that gets tossed on the floor
  • "dressing room" for the cheerleaders
  • no announcers from the WWF

RE: "YOUR PERFECT COMP"

Yeah.. I didn't mind the WWF announcer... compared to some of the other cheesy announcers we have seen.

I totally agree about the program and also about the cheerleader changing area.

I think they should have a cheerleader seating area. So many of them come drop all their bags in the prime seats and then take off. Meanwhile we who sit for 5-10 hours to watch their teams struggle to find seats and get up and down as they walk in and out to get stuff out of their bags.

I TOTALLY AGREE!!  I was there too, and the first day we were surrounded by people REALLY complaining about not being able to find seats.  Some people were understandably bummed about finding seats, others were darn right rude!!  Having assigned sections for "team sitting" and for them to stash their bags and blankets would help a lot!!

Having run my own competitions before, here are some things you might be interested to know.

* In order to have a video company present you can't allow video cameras. This is the video company rule not the comp company.

* Large venues such as UOP or the Sac Conv center require that you use their food service and will not allow you to add to it with your own outside vendors.

* The expense of running a competition is huge. From payroll to truck rentals to venue rentals to advertising to a years worth of planning to insurance and to all the hundreds of little things like copy fees, judges travel, and trainer fees it's crazy. $10 at the door is about right. If a company is allowing free admission ask your gym director what the registration fees were before you get too excited.

* Comp companies have to "pick their battles'" There's only so much they can do about people saving seats and being rude. Trust me it's a problem that every company trys to solve and in turn win a nobel peace prize.

All in all I think we have some great comp companies in Nor Cal. Im looking forward to Spirit Spectacular. They do a good job and are always trying things on the cutting edge. I love how last year the results were up on their site the next day along with You Tubes of every single team. I hope they do that again. That alone is worth the admission fee and having to choke down more nachos! Ha!

RE: "YOUR PERFECT COMP"

Yea, I think most of us know it's the video companies that aren't allowing videotaping.   It's unfortunate that they feel they would get no business at all if everyone were to videotape because I don't think that's true ... I think if their prices were reasonable most would prefer not to tape.  And if their turnaround time was reasonable (not six weeks or so after the competition) I think even more would buy them.  But to force it on others if they want any kind of videotape of their child is just not right.

I would love to check out Spirit Spectacular, it sounds like it will be fun to watch.  I'm just trying to find out what time it starts because that day is Superbowl Sunday.  I'm hoping it starts early (the game doesn't start until 3:30 p.m.).   I asked Danny in another post but haven't heard back.   Maybe it's too early to tell.

I'm still laughing at the WWF comment.....

Competing on SuperBowl Sunday? Yuk!!! We made that complaint last year and, thank goodness, Brad agreed. No more competing on Super Bowl Sunday for us!!! Every year I had to miss the festivities. Not this year!!! I don't care for either team who is playing, but I love the party!

RE: "YOUR PERFECT COMP"

I agree with all the suggestions that have been made on what would make a good competition.  My perfect competition would be for my daughters team to do really good, or what the heck they win.  Then all the way home I'd be saying now that was a perfect comp!
