RE: When should a competition be canceled?

I enjoy the travel but have to agree I would be upset to spend the money to travel and then not have any competition especially if my child is on a level 2-4 team.  I like the competitions that have a grand champion award because at least the teams that don't have competition in thier division have something to compete for.  I think I would be disappointed if we didn't have a couple traveling competitions.  Its an excuse to get away for an extended weekend a couple times of year.

We always go to competitions with only few number of teams. With so many divisions now it is hard.  I dont think we ever had many in our divisions with the exception of Americas Best.   It seems like a gamble all the time.  Even the competition this weekeed there were only 1 to 4 teams in most divisions. We went to cheer power last 3 years and it was small and we had fun. In fact some of our teams did not have any competition.  I think it is best to go where you are happy.  Some of these competitions have the same teams so it is a good idea to try to see other teams.  I also agree that the level 4-5 are the teams that really should travel far it is like an incentive.

To answer Nelson's question, from what I can tell at our gym, travelling to Southern California or to Vegas at least once during the season has been a blast for all the teams, as long as it's a well known competition that many teams are attending.  The little ones feel like they're part of something big, especially when they get on that stage under those lights.  When you go against teams outside of your area, being judged by judges outside of your area, it's different than the usual local regionals.  Even if you don't win or even place, you get to see how you stack up against talent you don't usually get to see.  We especially love seeing the teams from Southern California.

Personally, and this is just me, but I would not want to be part of a gym that only allows their top team(s) (usually level 5) to travel.  It makes the others feel they are less worthy and that the main emphasis for that gym is on those teams.   I'm not saying they should all go to Atlanta or Dallas, I completely understand the top teams travelling as that can get quite expensive, and they are long trips.   But I think the other teams should also have the experience of travelling (shorter trips) ... they will have those memories forever.

Our entire gym goes to Vegas and then some to Atlanta. At the beginning of the season, we give all of the traveling team parents the option of NOT traveling and moving their kids to another team. Now, this RARELY happens, but sometimes a parent just doesn't want their kid to travel for one reason or another.

We are only 5 hours from Vegas, so even though it's not too too far, it's still far enough and exciting enough, to feel like we traveled far. Last year we only brought 2 teams to Atlanta, but it was so much fun that we wanted to bring more. Then one of our level 3 teams did their own fundraiser so they get to go too.

This way everyone has the option to travel to a big competition, but some aren't forced to travel too far away.
