hiya! well i've always been interested in comp cheerleading but i've always been intimidated by all of the level 5 teams and such that are filled with 16 year olds like me...and well i'm not as advanced as any of them. i used to be a pom dancer so i'm good with cheer dance but as for the tumbling i'm not to par. the point is, is it too late for me to start comp cheering? im obviously not expecting to be a level 5 cheerleading in a year but i was hoping i could start at a lower level team and take tumbling lessons and hopefully master a backhandspring someday.
j/w if it was way too late for me, since im reading here about so many kids who start at age 8 or 7. would i be looked down upon, and are there some teens like me in cheer gyms who are just beginners, or are cheer gyms jsut for the advanced?
It's never too late if you find the right gym. Check with the cheergyms.com and see if they have other level senior teams. At ACE we have two level 5 teams (large coed and small coed), but we also have a level 2 large senior and a level 3 large coed.
Many gyms will do the same thing. If you have a passion to learn, don't let anything stop you.
definitly! Its never too late to join a gym. At our gym we have spots for every level cheerleader. Sure tumbling is important but so is stunting, dancing and motions. I highly suggest getting involved! Its a blast! What area are you from?
Just to make sure you realize it, I'll add my .005 cents...
It's not too late. Many gyms will have senior levels other than level 5. Go for it!
I can't speak for all kids/gyms/teams, but in my experience so far a cheerleader doesn't get looked down upon for not having the crazy skills. Most of those involved know how long it may take to get tumbling, so I've seen mostly support for those trying to get any new skill.
As a girl who has been cheering for 7-8 years now, I can definitely say from experience that most teams are welcoming to newbies, though frustrating at times, you all get through it as a team. Cheerleading isn't always about the skills. You don't have to be a fantastic at cheerleading to be a cheerleader, it's the heart and hard work you put into it. You should really try it out & I hope you find the team that is best for you.
It is so common for girls that are interested to think that they will only be placed on a team if they have tumbling skills. Nothing is further from the truth. I love working with our Senior Level 2 team. Watching them get skills is so inspiring and exciting.
Take a chance and give it shot, you never know what could happen. Enjoy your experience!
nope its never too late ! i always thought it was too late .. im 16 now and i just joined a senior level 2 team in may. i loveee it ! i'd like to move up to level 3 next year b/c i think our gym is adding a senior 3 for next year. hopefully. and my team actually has alot of "beginners" that are around the same age as me .. alot of sophomores .. and our team is like the beginner team at the gym so we have ppl from 6th grade - 12th grade

Motions always puts together either a level 2 or 3 team. I like Motions for the begining cheerleader because I feel that they follow the proper progressions and really teach proper basics before moving forward. If you are looking to join a gym I would look into Motions. Goodluck.
OC Mom, Mom of 5 great kids! A cheerleader/softball player, a RETIRED cheerleader, a football/baseball player, 1 Airman and future Police Officer and one college student!
ohh alrighty! i never knew motions had a lower senior level team...thank you! a question...what can i do to start preparing for tryouts? i know i'm not going to be amazing when tryouts come but just in general...any special exercises i should work on, etc? i just want to be ready, that's all.

Don't want to push Motions down your throat (okay, maybe a little), but I also think Motions is a great gym. This year and last year we have/had a senior level 2/3. The team last year was amazing!
Nelson had some commitments earlier this year for his teams that would help with flexibility and some strength building. If you do a search I'm sure you'd be able find it. Also, if you can afford it, privates at Motions or a gymnastics gym or classes at a gymnastics gym would help with tumbling.
Yes! The best way to prepare for tryouts is to take some classes for tumbling, maybe see if you can get into a stunting class to learn proper technique, and work on your jumps and motions at home.
Im on the motions level 3 all girl team right now, and I must say it is a wonderful experience for both newbies and people like me who have been cheering for a long time. I found that motions was very welcoming and the coaches really work with you on your skills. I suggest that you try out at several different gyms and practice with them for a few times to get the feeling of where you would fit in best. There are tons of wonderful gyms in the area and if you called the gyms, i bet they would love to give you some more information. I hope to see you at tryouts for 07-08

My daughter cheered w/ therm and they are a great bunch of girls and guys . Also the coaches Holly , Mellisa and Jill are wonderful. On the divas there is a place for everyone.
