How can you tell if a program is the best? Is it by how great there level 5 team is or if they have a level 5 team at all? What if the program try’s to find a category that no one else is doing and takes first place all year long. That team at the end of the year can say we had 10 first place trophies so that means we are the best program around. They would then use it as a selling point to recruit the next year. Brag about being the Grand Champion of a competition when there was no one in there category. Almost every team does it.
This goes same for competitions. Why give out a Grad Champion to someone that was in a level all alone. That team could go out, play rock paper scissors, and still be the Grand Champion. Not too sure, how to fix that one maybe someone out there might have a good idea.
Sorry for the rant just wanted to know how everyone else felt.

Grand champion usually encompasses a few divisions, like grand champion of jr divisons would include large, small and jr coed. So, at least, if you were the only team in your particular division, it lets you see how you stacked up against the other teams in a similar division.
When you say "a program is the best", you have to ask, the best for who? What does it mean to be the best? You could say that a program that has a team or teams that do well at Worlds (Cheer Athletics for instance) is the best because they actually finished at the top. I would say a program is successful if it continues to grow. It's successful if it's been around for a while and has a team that's level 5, or at least level 4. But being successful and being the best are two different issues I guess.
People can see right through teams that go to competitions that have nobody attending or win in categories where they compete alone. They're not fooling anyone. If that's the only way they have to measure success, they won't last long.
I think you are talking about National Champions as the above poster is correct with the Grand Champion. I think there definitely needs to be a minimum score achieved to get a National Championship banner and jacket/sweatshirt if you have no competition in your category. If the comp is giving out a Grand Championship award then you have something to work for as usually it is given out to the top score in each division (Senior, Junior, etc) whether or not you competed against anyone or not. So if you are competing by yourself your goal is to get the highest score of the day of all the Senior (or Junior, etc) teams so you can call yourself a Grand Champion and it will be warranted.
I think we should contact USASF to make it required to attain a minimum score that is the same for all competitions to get a National Championship banner and or jackets and sweatshirts. You should NOT be able to just show up to claim your trophy at a designated National Championship competition. It just doesn't teach the kids anything. Just my thoughts!

Sorry I was using "grand champion" as an example. Say State Champion or something else I just feel that if a team is competing alone then that team should not be eligible to be a champion. Too many teams have banners for no reason. How can people take cheerleading serious as a “sport” if teams are crowned as champions without competition?
Even if it is a local competition there should be an ( * ) next to a first place if there was no one else in that level.
Maybe all competitions should use the same scoring method then at the end of the year. You can see how well that team did even if say the gym on the other side of town had a level 5 team but they where never at the same competition. At the end of the year, you can tell team “A” had 10 first places and an average score of 9.2 but team “B” had only 5 first places but had an average score of 9.6. There are just too many competitions and they all have different rules and some teams only go to some competitions to avoid each other. It would just be nice to see how all team really stack up against each other.
if you lost you would'nt get first. Thats why most coaches don't tell the team their going aagainst themselves so they don't slack off. I have heard of a team that went against themselves and got 2nd. They fell during tumbling stunts droped
OK, I have been doing this with my daughter for about 7 years now and I can say that I have NEVER seen a team take 2nd place when they were the only one in their division no matter how bad they did!! I would love to know what comp did that! What team took first!!???
