sprained ankles

I was jus wondering if anyone who has sprained there ankle in cheerleading could tell me how long it was before they could tumble and everything.. specifically if theres any flyers out there that had sprained ankles, how long before u were back in? It is my right ankle so it sucks pretty bad.. The doctor said 6 weeks to fully heal but i jus wanted to see how long it took for other cheerleaders to heal..

Thanx n goodluck to the rest of u on staying healthy! : )

My daughter rolled her ankle and had a sprain grade 3 the worst type you could have. Was told would have been better if she had broken it.
However pls follow the doctor's instructions and allow enough time for it to heal.
If you start back on it before it has enough time you could do some permanent damage to it. See if your health plan will allow you to have some physical therapy and maybe ankle rehab. My daughter got this and it helped however it was several months before her ankle was back around 90 percent.
Hope that all goes well with you.
Also my daughter wasn't a flyer.
Good luck!

I agree with the person above. I have sprained my ankle a million times. I never listened to the doctor and once it felt better, I was on it. well, MY ANKLE IS MESSED UP. I can no longer tumble or jump on it. If I sit on it wrong, it feels as though its going to break. DO NOT GO ON YOUR ANKLE. No matter what your team or coach wants. WAIT IT OUT!

I can relate to that one. I sprained my ankle, but being the best tumbler on the team I couldn't let my team down so I never let it heal. I tumbled on it for the rest of the season. It hurt but her I just said it will get better and I sucked it up. After the season ended I found out I now needed surgery on it and that I would never be able to tumble or cheerlead again. All those years of hard work went to waste all because I was stupid and didn't let it heal. Take your time on it. Trust me you don't want to go through what i did.

It depends on the degree of the sprain. Did they tell you that?

1st degree - 1 - 3 weeks
2nd - up to 8 weeks
3rd - up to several months

Definitely ask your doctor for a referral to physical therapy and if you have a trainer at school, they should be able to do some things to help you too. In the meantime, you can work on getting some range of motion back (remove any wraps or braces and while sitting with your leg out in front of you, pretend you're writing the alphabet in the air with your toe and use your ankle to get as much motion as you can tolerate. Be sure to ice when you are done, and you can do this exercise 4 or 5 times a day and ice as often as every two hours. Just these two things will help you heal more quickly and more easily.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

My daughter sprained her ankle twice this year. The last time she stayed off of it for the recommended 3 weeks, before returning to any physical activity. She continues to have problems with it. At the last competition it still is giving her problems. Afterwards we had to ice it. An ankle injury can take along time to heal.
