Did anyone who attended worlds notice the numerous injuries on the mat? If so, what does the common factor seem to be? I would like to know how many kids were hurt, from where, and why? Opinions?
Good Lord, I hope you're not a mother from my gym! What if any knowledge gained from this will help you or your gym. Things happen. Why? Many reasons and other than brain farts, most can't be avoided. If you have worries about Worlds; don't go, thanks.
Gimme a break here! I don't think worlds causes injuries, maybe kids under pressure get injured more, maybe not. Please do not read this if it annoys you, but I am interested in hearing peoples ideas.
Injuries happen at any competition. Worlds was no exception. In fact, I think there were less injuries there. Most of the teams were the best of the best and you don't get there not knowing the dangers of landing wrong, etc. If you are worried, get your kid properly trained. It is up to the kid once they are on the floor to do the routine correctly. If your kid doesn't, then an injury may occur. Simple. Question, have you been in allstar cheerleading for long?
We didn't keep count, but no more than at other Nationals. Where and why? Who knows. I was just hoping that our teams stayed injury free, like I do at every practice and at every comp. Worlds to me was not exception. I find more injuries happen at practices yearly than at competitions.
I think a lot more injuries happen at practice. It's logical. You compete 2 1/2 minutes at comps, but practice for Hours a week. Even counting warm ups you still practice more in a week then you are on the floor at comps.
I used worlds as an example of a really tough comp; nothing more. Yes we have been in cheer for quite awhile. Yes I have my child well trained to prevent injury. Why does people assume this is a negative thread? I am looking to hear suggestions about training that helps prevent injury, relaxation techniques, whatever. Please... take all the defensiveness elsewhere so I can try to learn something here, ok? I saw several bad falls at worlds and due to how GOOD these teams are, I wondered if anyone had any thoughts as to the pressure or whatever? JEESH
I know it is worlds but the pressure is like most nationals. You are there because you are the best. Most likely by now a team that is considered to be of that caliber doesn't let pressure, nerves and the like get in the way. They know what needs to be done and use the technics taught them to handle the situation. You say that you saw several bad falls at worlds, then why are you asking us about who, where, what and when... oh and how? By any chance, did your team take a big fall or something?
Oh Good lord, NO my team didn't fall! Isn't anyone else interested in this? I don't care WHO you are, you don't waltz into worlds without a few jitters. There weren't more falls than anyplace else that I know of, I just used worlds as an example because it isn't a minor thing that can be made up next comp. I don't want specifics about who fell, I won't presume to ask about your team, . If ANYONE worries, please respond. OK?
I worry more about injuries at practices than at competitions. I find that you're more focused at competitions. What is your real issue? If you've been around allstar cheerleading for a while, why are you obessessing? Injuries happen. It's the nature of the sport, Worlds or not.
I do get what you are asking and I saw what you did. I was surprised at how many injuries or falls I saw at Worlds. And I also saw several kids throwing up before or after they competed.
Are coaches or the kids themselves pushing too hard to throw that pass that maybe is new to them, but feel pressure to throw it because they need it to compete at that level. Or is it nerves that get to some of the kids? I think it is a valid topic of conversation.
I know there are certain things kids or coaches do prior to competing that may help relax the team or individual.
So, if you have a kid that gets terrible nerves, are there suggestions or recommendations that you could give? Or as a coach, how do you prep your team prior to taking the floor so the nerves don't get to them?
The best way to calm nerves before competing is not to have them. Go to the comp thinking about how much fun it is going to be. Have fun. Don't worry about teams beating you, or well if I don't do this then we will lose. Cheer isn't about winning. It is about going out having fun and doing your best. I admit it's fun to win, but it's fun just competing to me also. If you walk into a comp set on having fun, not caring who is there, who is in your division, then truley you shouldn't be nervous. There will be nothing to be nervous about.
Kids were throwing twisting passes that they didn't quite have or had JUST begun landing successfully. Landing an incomplete twisting pass very often leads to knee injury. It's the same reason you see particular gyms have tons of knee injuries - they teach poor twisting technique and advocate throwing skills before they are ready.
I was at Worlds and I usually do not get nervous at competitions, but I was nervous at Worlds. My coach told me to visualize the routine and my part in my head while streching in warmups. It really helped me. I think some of the injuries that happen is because some have a ton of pressure put on them by coaches, parents and themselves for perfection. I think also it is so exciting that it is easy to loose you thought process on the mat if you don't stay focused.

This is the whole point of the levels. All star cheerleading is progressions. The teams that really need help with their skills are high schools. Esepcially ones in Northern California. IF I see one more high school with sloppy stunt and tumbling technique I will die. They try and do these 2 man stunts and look sloppy every competitions, even the so called top 5 nor cal schools.

Agree with Simple: It's been nice reading your posts. If you go to any competition this year, you will see sloppy stunts and tumbling. Make sure you have a will prepared and say goodbye to your loved ones.

ACEDAD, you crack me up! Don't see enough of you on these boards though lately. I guess you're too busy entertaining the moms on ProX.
