Who are the top 5 High School teams in Nor. Cal?

Who do YOU think are the top 5 High School cheerleading programs or teams in Northern California and why?

Here are mine...

1. Notre Dame High School, Belmont, CA - Very experienced, well respected coach. Long time advisor. Classy, well run program. Cuurently, the most decorated sports team at their school.

2. Saratoga High School, Saratoga, CA - Always a strong program and quite competitive. Well respected and knowledgable coach.

3. Clayton Valley, Clayton, CA - Had their ups and downs and are returning to the competition scene as a power house. Terrific advisor.

4. So. San Francisco High School, So. SF, CA - Continually a strong program. Not a strong tumbling team but great jumbers, sharp motions and well rounded cheerleaders. Often underated.

5. Corondalet High School, Concord, CA - Always a strong, deep spirit program. Mostly known for their dance teams, more so than their cheer team till this past year.

I agree with your picks. I do agree one hundred percent about So city. They have great technique and are strong in the basics. Someone has sure drilled into them about pointing their toes!!!

From what I saw in the 05-06 season, the 5 most competitive High School teams were without a doubt....

Granite Bay (trained by Power)
Oak Ridge (Summer training by cheergyms.com)
Carondelet (trained by cheergyms.com)
Folsom (trained by Power)
Clayton Valley (trained by cheergyms.com)

Foothill, Rocklin, Oakmont, and Amador Valley were all decent but just kind of a mess.

Notre Dame, College Park, Wilcox, and Mission San Jose all always showed well but were just lacking skill level.

This gets into an issue mentioned in another post, but all of you who are mentioning teams are only going by who you have seen and liked at particular competitions. We really need a playoff/finals situation with high schools based on their leagues/divisions to truly determine who the top teams are. Unless they have had a chance to go against each other, we can all throw out names of who we like, or throw out names of teams coached by power or cheergyms (the best team I saw last season wasn't coached by either). But to truly list a top 5, they have to have gone against the best (like the all-star teams at Worlds; there's a top 5 list that really means something).

The two best teams that went last year were Folsom and Granite Bay. I do not even think the others were even in Advanced divisions. I know Granite Bay placed 4 th IN DALLAS in advance. That is saying something.

In No Particular Order

1. Granite Bay- lots of talent, very sharp, and just fun to watch.

2. Folsom- clean, but very UCA. Strong stunters but lacking in sharp motion technique and jumps are below average.

3. Saratoga- great choreography and very strong routine.

4. Carandolet-clean program, but yes their dance team is VERY strong too.

5. Woodcreek- I thik its their name. They are from the Sacramento area though. Good stunts.

Most of the school teams are ok. Many of them either focus on their stunting or on dancing. Many of them just don't put very well rounded routines together. I guess because they cater to USA and USA doesn't demand that type of routine.

By far the best h.s. team routine I have ever seen is converse judson h.s. who used to win NCA nationals like 5 years ago.

Im gonna assume the first post was from a cheergyms cheerleader looking at the choices they made.
In terms of overall strength games and comps these would be my picks

1. Folsom High School- Hands down the best game and comp cheerleaders i watched this year. Coached by UCA instructors they really have it all. They are not trained by power last time I checked. Bobby biggs and not sure of the other two coaches names have done a fantastic job with them.

2. Granite Bay, I did not have the opportunity to watch them this year but have heard they pretty much are amazing with great coaches, from power leading them all the way.

3. Alhambra High School, If you watch these kids they just have it, the it factor. They can actually do college skills better then some of the college teams i saw this year. They are also coached i believe by a UCA former instructor.

4. Clayton Valley, They were a power house all those years ago when diane ojeda was in charge of them, and had a slow couple of years having to rebuild almost the whole program which happens with all types of programs, They really came out into their own this year and looked fantastic best of luck to them.

5. Concord High School, recently I saw there name in the paper for getting i think 2nd at nca west coast classic. I actually saw them compete at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the year and have watched them cheer at games so i think they are a team to watch out for. We saw see what the future holds for them. Technique wise in games they are fantastic.

You make your own opnions but really look at all angles not just that there trained at the gym you cheer at. Really look at everything if your gonna consider them the top high school in nor cal look at them from all angles.

I think your idea is a great idea, someone should host a competition with all nor cal high school teams and see how they rack up with a non bias judging panal.

Last time I checked, NO high school team should be doing college aged tricks. They are really going to crack down on schools who do that. It only takes a few schools to make bad mistakes to have whole states not stunt. Almost every school in Nebraska and Ohio CANNOt stunt do to many accidents and high costing insurance. Also I would argue that a few other schools are better than Alhambra and Concord.

Its not meant to start an arguement have your own opinions, everybody can make there own decisions who they think or dont think is good. THe point of the topic is to see what other people think not to argue about why thye agree or not. Its not always personal........

The Topic

I think the topic should have been who have you enjoyed watching, or even who are your favorites. But, who are the top 5 teams in Nor Cal? That just opens things up for debate.

I saw a couple level 5 high school teams compete at Athletic Championships. I think they were Saratoga and Granada. I believe Granada won, but they were both impressive. Folsom were great! What level did Carandolet compete at? I don't remember seeing them.

Tell me about these teams

I've never heard of any of these teams, but I'm not from Nor Cal so I guess that's not surprising. But, what big competitions or Nationals do they do? Do they ever travel out of the Nor Cal area? Have they placed well outside of the Nor Cal area?
Do any of these squads have full squad tumbling? What kind of stunts are we talking? Could they give Dunbar (of cheerleader nation) a run for the money?

I would probably say that Granite Bay is the only team I have seen that is very strong. Folsom is ok too. The rest of them have talent in a specific skill set or area. As far as Dunbar, there no team out here like that. Full squad standing backs, a few fulls and pretty consistent stunters. Many of those girls from Dunbar come from Pep Club and Kentucky Elite. Some of those girls are on KY elite now, because if you watch worlds you will see some familiar faces.

half of the teams listed aren't even in the advanced division so they shouldn't be considered the top teams in ca.

my top three are:

folsom- i thought they were really good and i liked that they had two comp teams. but the routines were never clean enough

oak ridge- one of the most fun teams to watch because theres always something going on. they had everything stunts, jumps, tumbling, they were great... but definetly shouldnt compete with allstars

granite bay- even though i only saw them compete once they looked very much like an all star team. those girls are very well trained.
...and didn't they go to dallas and get 4th thats pretty impressive

to: tell me about these teams,

The teams mentioned i.e. Carondolet, College Park, Mission San Jose, Norte Dame,
Wilcox, and Clayton Valley did very well at USA High School nationals Anaheim.
If you check the Teams Cheergyms.com section of the message board you will see that most of the teams made finals and quite a few in the top 5. Clayton Valley took 1st place. Clayton Valley is coached by Angie Amo the same coach for Pyramids JP Gold team last year. They have an incredible program through Cheergyms.com.

Others Mentioned

To cheergyms mom, it's great they did well at USA High School Nationals, but how about other tougher competitions? These teams I'm seeing that people feel are the top five, it would be nice to see what warrants that title. Are these all level 5 teams?

I think these posts are mainly plugs for particular teams and organizations, which is fine of course, as long as people realize that's what's really going on. There's no way to truly determine a top 5 list in Nor Cal unless we have one competition they ALL attend.

I Agree

Date:

Oh, I completely agree. Let's throw all the level 5 high school teams in Nor Cal together at the same competition, and see who comes out in the top five. That's about the only way to determine a true list. Same for the other levels, but if you're talking true talent (like at Worlds) I think you have to go with who wins in the advanced category.

Sure, you can say 's level 4 or level 3 team is awesome, but comparing the lower levels to level 5 teams is a bit of a mismatch. I say this because level 5 teams can always perform at lower levels, but the opposite is not true.

Okay well in my honest opinion i think that Granite Bay has really come a long way ... i mean honestly they were really bad a few years back in the day, but now that they have some new coach or soemthing cool like that they are really awesome! i watched them and i was AMAZED! so i dunno the other teams that are okay i guess are like folsom, oak ridge and oakmont, but granite bay is really good. so if anyone says a team thats better then them ,.,. SHUT UP! WELL ACTUALLY ... i am on my own cheer team and were called Christian Combats and we are new this year .,.. COME CHECK US OUT! we are pretty good, watch out GB!
