Hey all, I was wondering what are the best options for colleges to cheer for in California? My daughter is not a flier. Love everyone's opinion. How is Sacramento State?
Sac State has a great coed program. I don't know much about their small coed team. But, if your daughter isn't a flyer, then I doubt if the coed team will work for her. SDSU has an all girl team. They placed 2nd at UCA this year and they are looking even better for the upcoming season. If your daughter is considering a 2 year college, then both Palomar and OCC have great programs. Palomar has been known for its coed program, but I was told that this season they are going to only have an all girl team, don't know if thats true. OCC competes at NCA (the rest that I mentioned are UCA schools) and placed 2nd in their division. I'm sure there are alot of other good programs in California, but these are the ones that I can think of that seem to do well at national competitions.
YES!! Palomar "kinda" has an All-Girl team this year. For the upcoming season, we have about 30 people in our program, including 6 boys with some great tumbling talent. Our coaches have discussed us competiting AG at UCA Nationals, and possibly Sm. Coed at USA and NCA. I'm not going to lie, we didn't have the best of seasons last year, but we have A TON of incomming talent this year, and you better believe were going back to UCA with vengence.
We do have a spot for just about everyone- Bases, Flyers, Tumblers, and Boys. If you show that you have determination and drive, we have a place for you. One thing I will say we have over some other Junior Colleges, is that our coaches and advisiors have VERY good relationships with TOP 4-year programs, including UK (D1A, UCA National Champs), Morehead (D1, UCA National Champs), Louisville (D1A, NCA All-Girl and Coed National Champs), HPU (D2, NCA All-Girl and Sm. Coed National Champs), and the University of Hawaii. We have many athletes in the majority of these schools, (mostly Morehead) with most of them on scholarship.
Good luck! -Alison (Amac)
Motions Sm. Sr's (2001-04), cheergyms open (04-05), Palomar College (05- present!)
I know these schools have competed or still compete now:
Long Beach State (Coed & All Girl) San Diego State (All Girl) Palomar Sac State (Small and Large Coed) Long Beach State City College Orange Coast College Chico State
There isn't many places in California to cheer at after high school for some reason. Some other options out of California are:
U of Hawaii Hawaii Pacific University Arizona State UNLV U of Washington Oregon State U of Oregon Idaho State University Boise State Colorado State
Those schools are not to far away from California for your daughter not to be to homesick.
Palomar is no longer the program it used to be. Once Tim left the Coed program it fell apart under the new leadership. The allgirl team placed top three two years ago at UCA but that was when Jeff was the coach. Although Palomar was the top junior college in California and quite possibly the country for a couple of years it is my opinion that until they hire a good coach staff the program will continue to stay stagnant if not fall off completely.
I wouldn't count Palomar out yet. Yes, Palomar had a rough season this past year, but transitional seasons sometimes are. The above poster sounds like they have something personal against Palomar.
