Cheer Odyseey

I recently heard from my coach that members on fCheer Odyseey were in a car accident last night on the way home from the comp in Anaheim and one of their members were killed and several hurt badly. I do not know all of the details so I have no more to offer, but I wanted everyone to know, so they could keep them in your thoughts and prayers

Oh no! they all will definitely be in my prayers. I am truly sorry to hear this. In my daughter's first year as an all*star, Cheer Odysey was one of the teams that made us think "Wow, they're really good." I love the enthusiasm of their coaches. My heart goes out to all involved. I hope those that got hurt fully recover.

I don't think Cheer Odyssey was at JamFest this weekend. Was there another competition in Anaheim?

Thoughts and prayers go out to Cheer Odyssey team and families.

It makes you realize in the grand scheme of things, that cheerleading drama, rivalries, free boys tuition etc. are meaningless when life throws you a tragedy like this.

Girl dies, 6 injured in freeway accident
Driver swerved to avoid collision with big rig and lost control, CHP says

Last Updated: April 4, 2006, 05:42:19 AM PDT

An eighth-grader from French Camp School was killed and six people, including her sister and mother, were injured early Monday in a traffic accident on Interstate 5 near Los Banos.
Four women and three girls were on their way back from a cheerleading competition when the 2006 Nissan Armada they were in rolled several times in a dirt median, according to the California Highway Patrol. Driver Lisa George, 44, of French Camp swerved to avoid a big rig, the CHP said.

George was driving the sport utility vehicle in the fast lane about 60 to 65mph, just under the 70 mph speed limit, the CHP said. James Scott, 53, of Moriarty, N.M., was driving a big rig about 55mph in the lane to the right.

Just after 4 a.m., as George was passing the truck, the big rig swerved into the fast lane, according to other motorists who witnessed the crash, said CHP officer Mike Panelli. George hit the brakes and swerved left to avoid a collision. She lost control of the SUV as it slid into the center divider, where it overturned several times, Panelli said.

During the crash, Katy George, 13, a student at French Camp School, was partially ejected from the vehicle and killed, the CHP said. Amanda George, 17, a senior at East Union High School in Manteca, sustained major injuries. She was flown by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Her condition was unknown at press time. Hospital officials would not release her condition without parental consent.

Lisa George, Katy's and Amanda's mother, remained in serious condition at University Medical Center in Fresno on Monday afternoon.

Jackie Rodgers, 15, of Manteca was flown by helicopter to University Medical Center. She also remained in serious condition late Monday afternoon.

It was not clear where Rodgers attends school. Officials at the Manteca Unified School District Educational Services would not say, citing student confidentiality.

Three other women were in the vehicle. Anissa Talavera, 36, of Manteca sustained major injuries and was in fair condition late Monday at University Medical Center. Charlotte Hernandez, 29, of Manteca was in stable condition with moderate injuries when she was transferred from Los Banos Memorial Hospital to Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Redwood City for further treatment.

Barbara Smith, 65, of Sacramento was treated for minor injuries and released from Los Banos Memorial on Monday. All six passengers and Lisa George were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, Panelli said.

At least some of the people in the car are affiliated with Cheer Odyssey, a Stockton-based cheerleading school offering cheerleader training and competitive teams. Panelli said the group was returning home from a competition.

On the Cheer Odyssey Web site, three of the women — Talavera, Hernandez and Lisa George — are listed as staff members. Talavera is a mini and youth coach for Cheer Odyssey, Hernandez is a gym director and All Team coach, and Lisa George is a fund-raiser coordinator.

Panelli said the investigation will continue, but that it appears that Scott, the big-rig driver, was the "primary factor" in causing the crash. Scott was not injured. The two vehicles never made contact, Panelli said.

"Other factors may come into play as we talk to other witnesses," Panelli said.

Northbound I-5 was closed for less than a half-hour as a result of the crash, Panelli said.

Cathy Nichols-Washer, superintendent of the Manteca Unified School District, said French Camp Principal Susan Sanders was visiting each classroom to give seventh- and eighth-graders the news about Katy George. In addition, Nichols-Washer said, the school nurse was available to counsel students, and Sanders would be sending a note home to parents.
