what Makes A Team Successful and Good?

What makes a team successful and "good"?

1) Detication
2) Unity... Team Bonding

Just picking a team by "whos the best" doesnt make you the best. Picking a team should be based on, yes, talent but also baste on deterinamtion, hard work and your gut feeling. Cause its not always about winning, its about having fun and taking chances! And if you have a team that gets the chance to bond together, go out together and knows each onther out side of "the team" you will most likely have a stronger more dependeble team. And I think thats what counts. If the team knows each other is are able to relate and included each other, it will make you successesful. Team Unity, detication and taking that "chance" are key.

I agree with your picks, and I also think the drive of the kids to learn is important. I really think that any kid can learn to stunt and tumble and dance. It's a matter of the kids WANTING to do it, loving to do it, and being driven to do it.

I agree that team bonding is good, but I think too much could backfire. Here's an example, say you have a few members of your team you have bonded well with, they're your best buddies now. But they haven't been pulling their weight, or they don't have the drive you have. They're there for the social part of it. They're there for the sleepovers, the pizza parties, all the social things, but when it comes time to work, they're just "not there". Well now that you've become best buddies, it's hard to say anything. It's up to the coach, but it's hard for even the coach when everyone has bonded like that, you know what I mean?? I've seen this happen plenty of times over the years. Winning isn't everything, but if every member of your team doesn't have the drive and isn't willing to work hard, your team will fail regardless of how you have bonded.

So I agree with Nor Cal Coach, I think drive is mandatory. Having the drive to work hard to succeed (not just the drive to learn), that is the key to a successful team in my opinion.

Positvie Reinforcement

Date:

Success, in a team, a family, and just about any collective group striving to acheive a common goal, is often based on POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. This can come from your fellow players, your family and your mentor....your coach. Confidence is a crucial part of believing in yourself and others. Positive feedback, especially for young people who are searching for it everywhere, is one of many keys to success. A truly successful coach holds a high bar for acheivement, with many expectations, while continually believing in the the vital role of each player as individuals.

i cant agree with you more. Ive been to a few gyms and Ive seen the same thing over and over again. the coach yelling reapeadily at the athletes. kyoure not doing it right. you never do anything right. you guys arent working you dont want to lsoe do you. at this rate youre going to lose and im going tyo sit back and say i told you so. well if you want a team to good you dont want to be negative. be positive. it has been showed in studies that if you are positive people do better then when you are negative. so be more positive then negative. you can still yell ya just not to many negative comments

Positive reinforcement is always the key to success, but lying to your team isn't good either. I don't like seeing programs, especially COMPETITIVE all star teams practicing like they don't care. Its a competitive program and people compete to win. It is about fun, team bonding, and learning, but along the way you should learn that life isn't always fair and you have to work hard in order to appreciate great success. Anything that is just given to you, its not appreciated. Coaches are there to get the best out of the kids, not have them feel ashamed. Myself, I like hardcore coaching and a no nonsense attitude. You come to work and win championships.

What Works For You

I agree with Look at both sides, you can't sugarcoat it if your team isn't working hard enough and not giving their best. If being on a winning team is what you're looking for, you might have a tough coach who is going to make you give 100% for it. It'll be hard, but it will be worth it. If that's what you want.

If on the other hand winning is not a high priority for you, and your there for other reasons, maybe social or just because you love doing it, then a tough coach may not be for you. From what I've seen at competitions, there are plenty of teams out there for you.

It just depends on what you're looking for. You'll know it when you find it.

My Thoughts

A successful team is built over time by developing a reputation of having a good team and making other people want to be a part of that program. By building an elite program a gym can make money from the teams that are aspiring to be on or like the elite team.

The MOST successful Coed programs give financial breaks of some kind to boys.

But you are the minority. Sport psychology studies show time and time again that the top 3 reasons kids participate in a sport (any sport) are:

1) To spend time with friends/socialize
2) To learn the sport/skills
3) To have fun

For most kids, learning is NOT that high on the totem pole. The same studies show that for kids who quit their respective sports, the number one reason is "It isn't fun anymore."

Wow, if my daughter only cheered competitively to socialize and make friends, I would save a ton of money by signing her up with pop warner, or some other local community sport. As would others. I think most of us paying out thousands of dollars per year need a little more than that. I would think the #1 priority is seeing improvement in your daughter/son's skills. I think that is what most of us parents are paying for. It doesn't matter so much if your team isn't winning first place if you see your child finally get their backhandspring, tuck, full, etc... That's how I see it anyway.

I think that making a team successful is to make every team member feel like they actually belong on the team. I just recently got off a team where I was the complete outcast, just because i had lost my backhandspring. There were times where i wanted to quit so bad but i still had that little tiny spark left in me. If you want to make a team successful, you need to let the members who may not be the best, know that they do have some good skills, and not just dig a hole in the ground, and throw them in..
