Does anyone have more information regarding High School rule changes for 2006-2007 season?
"In an effort to minimize risk of injury to high school cheerleaders, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has stated that basket tosses and other similar multi-base tosses may only be performed on appropriate mats, grass, rubberized and soft-yielding surfaces, effective with the 2006-07 season."
Quoted from Kauai Garden Island newspaper: http://kauaiworld.com/articles/2006/03/20/sports/sports02.txt
From what I understand, due to the recent injury of the college cheerleader that fell on her head doing a stunt on a hard floor (basketball court), they are implementing a new rule that high school and above can not do basket tosses or pyramid stunting on hard floors like you would during half time. They would have to pull out mats in order to do these which there usually is not enough time for during half time. It would not affect anyone performing on mats or spring floors from what I understand.
I got this info from news and internet reports so I may not be 100% accurate but this is the way I understood it.
By the way, CONGRATS to ALL of the high school teams this last weekend! I'm glad to hear it was a success for all!
Your quote posted in your email is correct. You still can do pyramids but just no basket tosses and "multiple base tosses", I believe. I'm going to a coach's conference next week (May 5-7) and to a NFHS Stunt Progression Course (National Federation High School). I'll ask for clarification of the new ruling and get back to you when I return.
