What worries me about GSSA's accountability is that they will be giving a bid...hopefully their scoring has improved so that their won't be a doubt that the team with the best performance all around that weekend, will get the bid.
I completely agree with you about both USA and GSSA's scoring. I think the industry as a whole is improving, but when there is no accountability for scoring, when judges don't have to justify their scoring, you have a problem. We were very happy with the scoring at American Championship -- it was fair, and straight-forward. Points for difficulties, deductions for falls. No vague subjective comments. Why can't they all be that way?
Another observation... I don't understand how it's okay for judges to be associated with particular gyms. I know they can't judge if their gym is participating, but it's a bit obvious they have something to gain by dinging points from rival gyms. I'm not saying it's a common practice, but I am saying there are no rules to prevent it. And that is a problem.
In defense of GSSA, the score sheets this year are much more skill based and not so subjective. They also have been having deduction and legality judges just like most of the other competitions across the country. In my experience, GSSA has always tried to listen to the coaches suggestions and have made changes every year to improve.
JAMZ was 17 dollars to get in last year in Vegas. And I caught the photographer taking pics of all the "cute" moms while they moved around..... hmmm
Also, I didn't really like SurfJam last year (in Long Beach) because the seating was on HARD bleachers (just like a high school comp) and we were very very squished. I hope that changes this year. Also, my daughter though Jammy was scary. (he was a bit odd)
Getting in free is always a plus, but it doesn't do me good when I can't feel my rear.... I guess a cushin is in order.
Cheersport was WONDERFUL!!!!! We got to see and the judges were up high!!! We actually got to stand and cheer on our team because the people behind us had monitors to watch them and our girls LOVED THAT!!! They said it made a HUGE difference in their performance!!! Cheersport had beautiful programs for only 5 dollars and gave out blankets instead of tshirts. This was GREAT!!! There was plenty of room to move around and lots to do and see. I think all competitions should follow their lead. They had their game faces on and it was wonderful for all of us!
USA.... well, they won't be going anywhere if they don't start reading these boards.
Kinda, I probably misread your post because I had to chuckle when you said you got to stand and watch because the people behind you had monitors to look at. They had big screens at American Championships too, but I would never stand in front of folks who actually want to watch it live on stage and not stare at a screen, right? Maybe I missed something there.
You said programs were $5. Did they offer schedules for free? I think that's the key. Nice to have a program if you want one, but you shouldn't have to buy one just to see when your team goes on. You know I don't recall American Championships having programs (at least nobody I knew bought one). But schedules for both days were free, so that was nice. Oh, they gave out nice backpacks to everyone too. But I know what you're thinking there -- let's forget about the backpacks and other stuff and just lessen the comp fee. But at least if you're gonna be forced to pay it anyway, might as well get something out of it, I guess.
Blankets sound nice, I think that's a great participation gift. Would certainly last longer than a t-shirt!
Well, it made a difference in our girls reaction to the performance, seeing their parents jumping up and down. Was it ok by everyone else? Probably not, but they could still see. All I can say is this, MAJORITY of the other gyms did it too..... that's where we got the idea from. Maybe that's the difference between California and the rest of the cheer world???? Maybe they feel as if their parents care more? I doubt it but our kids loved it. They said so. The monitors/big screens were HUGE. You didn't miss a thing. And plus, the seating was such that you could see anyway. But if you want to pick apart my post, maybe you should have gone to Atlanta. You would have known better......
Your coaches should be telling you what time you go on. If they're not, then you need to speak up. The programs were NICE ones for only 5 bucks. You didn't have to buy one to know what time your team went on. But then again, our coach fills us in on such things. Sorry you have to buy one to know.
Backpacks are nice but we already have a gazallion of them after 6 years of cheer. Tshirts? Got a ton of them too. Blankets? Nope! This was the first one!!! So it was nice to get something different! And to get entrance fees cheaper? I don't think they could! It was 25 to get in for BOTH days! And no parking fees even though we didn't need to park. The comp was run ON TIME!!! When they said 3:41 pm..... that meant 3:41 pm. Not a second later! You could sit, ACTUALLY SEE THE TEAM PERFORMING EVEN THOUGH THE EAST COAST TEAMS ACTUALLY CHEERED, JUMPED, SCREAMED, DANCED, ETC. FOR THEIR KIDS and you enjoyed every minute of it! It pumped everyone up like crazy!!!
Want us to keep up Cali? We need to STEP UP. I loved watching CheerForce and Power but even they need to step it up a bit. Hard to imagine but alot of those east/south coast teams are THAT GOOD. Scary, huh???? Maybe it's the water!!!
Hmm agree/disagree, you didn't answer my question about the schedules; did you have to buy a $5 program to get one?? Probably didn't occur to you but it's nice to see what times other teams are performing. Who wouldn't want a schedule in their hands. Wasn't picking apart your post (geeeez), was just responding.
I'm thinking as a spectator I wouldn't want a bunch of parents standing up in front of me jumping up and down while their team is performing. But as you indicated, it didn't matter to you anyway what the parents behind you thought.
No need for the caps (why yell?) and no need to get so defensive. Life's too short, you know?
I wouldn't like people standing/jumping/dancing in front of me either. But I can understand they're doing it for support.
I like having a schedule in my hand. The coaches always tell the teams when they're going on, of course, but that message doesn't always reach us parents/relatives, right? Bottom line, no excuse for comps to not pass out free schedules. And I love the backpacks, they're cool and really came in handy for Disneyland!

RE: Which Competitions to go to & which to avoid
The stage setting in Atlanta was such that it didn't matter if you jumped up and down. The stage level was approx 5 feet high, there was priority seating up front for parents and fans that was monitored by staff. I was sitting 2-3 rows behind the priority seating and at no time did the fans jumping up and down interfere with seeing the performance. Now if jumping was done in competition venues here in California we would be yelling at those fans because we wouldn't be able to see because the stages and seating are not set up very well.
And as far as the program. This was a full color program with the schedule printed, not typing paper slipped inside. $5 was very cheap price for this program/schedule. It also had the awards schedule listed, a list of all the gyms attending with each of there teams (alphabetically listed), full team photos of 2005 winners, and a list of winners from all previous years. It was very impressive, informative, and worth the money. And it was accurate. How many competitions can say that about their programs or schedules?
So, if you weren't there don't criticize. I have to say this was by far the best run competition I have ever attended. Image approx 900 teams competiting ON schedule, no frustrating lines to wait in, easy to walk around without feeling like a sardine, easy to move around to watch all 8 stages, and the price for two days was reasonable for such a huge competition.
Well done Cheersport! And thanks for asking on your website for opinions on how to improve.

RE: Which Competitions to go to & which to avoid
Thanks for that! I knew the people who sat behind us could see cause I did it myself right before that. I was trying to give a "picture" to those who didn't attend but i think I wasn't clear enough and came off like I "didn't care about those behind me". You see, that's another problem with California competitions. We all assume that every competition is run badly and planned out badly that everyone other comp must be the same. Like I said earlier, you had to be there to know.
They fit 70,000 people, 11,000 athletes in and NO ONE (not yelling, just stressing cause there's no bold button) was squished, waiting in lines, etc...
The program was full color, beautiful paper and had wonderful photos of the teams, told you where everyone was from and who they brought with them, and so much more!!!! You could get the performance order off of the website days before ( which I printed out before we even left home) There were lots of vendors but I would have liked to see more. But even so, the 10 or so vendors offered TONS of stuff. (not yelling, just no bold button) I was going to get the photo on the green screen but totally forgot. (kicking myself now)
You were allowed to take non flash photos. I wish I could post some here so you could see the enormity of the entire event (is that even a word?) But I can't. I truly hope that the California competitions step up. They need to BADLY. This competition just seriously put them ALL to shame. Even the ones I like!!!
And you're right, life's too short to get upset. That's why I didn't. Remember this.... when you read something, you don't hear the tone or voice that is trying to be portrayed. When something is in CAPS that doesn't mean they are yelling. I don't know how to make it stressed a bit more than my regular type. With 5 kids, yelling is something I have down to a science. I can even yell without raising my voice!!! So you haven't even seen yelling from me, trust me........ ;)
Thanks for the additional info agree/disagree and the other post as well. It sounds like the setup was quite different than what we're used to out here. You won't convince me about the schedules, I still say pass out the sheets to everyone for free (last minute changes are typically on sheets, not always on the website). But other than that (I won't get into the videotaping issue, which I assume was not allowed) it sounds like they did some things right, and that's a step in the right direction. Every competition has room for improvement. It's the little changes that wouldn't take much to fix that can make such a difference. Hats off to this one and to American Championships for being at the top of quite a few lists.
Yes, free schedules would have been really good actually. When I was there, I hadn't even thought if it. I had the printed one with me so it didn't even dawn on me to look for one. But I truthfully think most bought the program anyway. It was only 5 bucks and was super nice. Maybe that's why they didn't give out a schedule. I don't know the thinking behind the decision. Maybe next year!!!
But I don't recall getting a schedule for free other than maybe twice in my daughters cheer career. But it really could be me cause I usually bring my own. And then of course, there I am wondering where that team came from!!! So a free one is a great idea!!!!
Cheergyms.com has pictures from the competition on the Motions and Pyramids site so you can see how big the warmup floors and competition floors were set up.
Thanks for all the compliments about CHEERSPORT Nationals. We were thrilled to have an increased West Coast presence this year and hopefully that will continue.
We do read the message boards because we want to continue to improve and frankly, we just love competitive cheerleading. Many of our best ideas have come from coaches and athletes who have attended our events. Please let us know what we can do to serve you better. We really do listen and implement the suggestions.
1. Keep what you are doing up to now the same. You are winning in the competition game. Running on time, seating, judges up high above the crowd, a uge venue, lots of warm up floors, lots of staff, etc... is a WONDERFUL thing. We soooooooooo appreciate it!
2. The food selection was great! Offer Jamba Juice, Togos, other outside venues a space. Smaller companies will jump at this chance. The selection was great but could be a tad bit better. But only a tad bit, not much. You are already leading this area as it is...
3. Offer rooms to teams with many kids to rent. Or do like others do, put up curtains for privacy and rent them out. We would have loved to have that. We were there for 10 hours and needed to sit, curl hair, get dressed, etc. Doing that in the hallway was tough. Not impossible, but tough.
4. WE LOVED the priority seating and the roping off of the areas. The staff at each end was a GOD SEND. Thank You!!!!!!
5. More room on the stage for the awards. And not quite so late. Please.
6. The trophies were a bit small compared to others. Just an observation. You are the leader of the pack. Make an example of everyone else.
7. The programs were GREAT GREAT GREAT..... can gyms put in ads too? Maybe not individual ads cause that gets to be way too much but maybe large gyms can do it.
8. More vendors. Even if they aren't completly cheer focused, but sports vendors. I tell you, we look for things to buy. Anything new is really cool!
9. The funky colors of the tshirts was a bit much. Thank you for the selection though. They ran out of sizes to quickly. A black Cheersport sweatshirt would have been ideal.
10. Keep up the great work. All of the improvements are tiny compared to most. Oh yea, thanks for not blaring the music. We could hear and my ears are not ringing. I suggested that to another competition and they said "tough, deal with it". You guys just proved me right..........

Thanks again.
The one and only thing I would like improvement is listing of teams that won paid and unpaid bids. I don't see that anywhere on the web site or in the results posted. I've been trying to gain this information and no one seems to know.
Wasn't there and hadn't heard, but, was videotaping allowed? This has been a hot topic for a lot of folks. If it wasn't allowed, please please please let us videotape our kids. It's just too expensive to buy the DVD's and it takes way too long (4 to 6 weeks) to see the routine again. There is absolutely no harm in allowing it. If some company wants to do their own professional thing, that's fine, there are folks who don't want to be bothered with taping who are willing to pay the price and wait weeks for it. But please, give us a choice. I can think of no other sport where videotaping your children's performances is not allowed.
If you allowed it, then YAY for you, you can disregard this post!
