Uniform vs Costumes?

At Spirit Sports Cheer Force Diamondz had an Elvis themed music and "uniforms". For those that didn't attend you can take a look at the uniforms at Jamie Christian Photography:

Question: Do you think All Star Cheer teams should move away from the traditional "uniform" look and move towards the "costume" look? I personally like the "costume" direction, maybe just because it is different.

I would always want to see the "traditional" uniform look but I agree with oh yeah on this one. It makes it exciting to see something different on the second day.

"costumes" are creative and fun to watch, but i dont think that you can ever take away the best look, which is a more creative, one of a kind uniform...

i think that if EVERYONE starts to do more and more of the costuming that it won't be as much fun to see and watch anymore... but these are just my opinions.

I think that costumes are great but as you said, "At Spirit Sports Cheer Force Diamondz had an Elvis themed music and "uniforms". Basically, that means your outfit would have to go along with the theme of your music.... all the time. I know i like to change my music for my girls and keep them interested. Unfortunatly I would have to make sure every competition music I produced would have to go along with there outfit(the theme). It would get old after awhile.
Having a uniform allows you to change your music and have many different themes you want throughout the routine. You dont have to buy a new outfit every season to go along with your dance. You're asking to spend a lot of money every season. I don't agree with changing your uniforms every season because the uniform doesn't make the team. Also Uniforms are one of the things that trade marks your gym. If a gym changes there outfits all the time you never set truely to other gyms who you are. I know when I see OC, Starstruck, VCSC Pride, and Power, I know who they are. Every gym should take pride in their uniforms.
I think for dance team, changing your outfits is great! Its so important to have a good outfit for your dance teams.

Well since routines have evolved past just being routines, I thought the costumes to be a great way to make my kids feel like they are performers and more performing there routines. I teach my kids to go out and not just throw a routine but to go out and put on a show. So what better way to put on a show then with costumes.

I agree with the person that said we should be useing uniforms and this is why they have a white uniform, blue uniform and the elvis costume. So we have three to chose from its like the person said about the music they like to mix up there music i like to mix up my costumes and uniform, so there not amways wearing the same thing.

As for music we only have a few elvis songs in there at key points, it helps not to make the whole thing to much.

Coach Shawn,

Thanks for the insight on your decision. And I'm really looking forward to GSSA to see your team and those "uniforms". Its just such a nice breath of fresh air.

I like the uniforms better than costumes. I think costumes detract from the routine and don't make the technical skills look their best. I think its exciting and different but by no means makes you a champion at any competition. My feeling is that because its differnet doesn't mean its better.

I too like uniforms better than costumes. I agree that the costumes did "detract" from the routine. Costumes remind me of dance and seem to take away the CHEER from a routine. However, I think Cheer Force Diamondz is a great team with a lot of talent and the judges can see past the costumes.

Now having seen the Cheerforce Elvis routine with the costumes (in the past I'd only ever seen it in uniform), I have to say I do like it better in normal uniform. The costumes to me were distracting from the performance in a big way. I know a lot of people really liked it though!

I love the costumes, I'm so sick of seeing the same old uniforms, costumes really add to it and make it feel like almost a broadway show, I hope that more teams begin to tear away from boring uniforms

i love how everyone says its how you perform the routine that determines if you win but then come on here and say uniforms uniforms uniforms. well if you want a show what better way then with costumes i go to play where they PERFORM i dont want to see them in a uniform how dull i want to see them in costumes im going with costumes on this one just because it adds to the performance i think people are just used to uniforms and not costumes
