Several years ago I heard Morton, one of the owners from cheergyms.com, mention that cheerleaders have a 60% better chance of getting their job of choice over the average applicant.
With that in mind, after your cheerleading career has ended what do you hope to do? Will cheerleading have helped you?
Absolutely! I have been affiliated with cheerleading for over 13 years now and have coached for 7 of those years. After finally letting go this year, I can look back and say that cheerleading has positively impacted my life in so many ways. My communication skills have improved tremendously and I am no longer nervous or scared to speak in front of large groups or crowds. Cheer has taught me initiative and time management as I can effectively can plan an itinerary and stick to it as well as organizational skills because when you're coaching a 30 member coed team, you've gotta be prepared for anything.
Let's put it this way...last year I finished my Masters, had a full time job as a critical care nurse, coached Pyramids Small Seniors twice a week with some privates in there and planned my wedding...without a nervous breakdown. :)
If I could go back today, I wouldn't have changed that one bit. I'm a nurse here in a hospital in Las Vegas now and just applied for a second job at a clinic, I guess I get bored at times. Ha!
Go cheergyms.com, I'll see you at all College and Jamz Nationals! -Teeny
I have been involved in cheerleading for 12 years now and I can't think of any one thing in my life that has had a positive impact as much as cheerleading. I, too, have gained the confidence to be in front of large crowds of people and speak or present. I am pursuing a Master's degree and throughout my internships I commonly hear people thanking me for being so cheerful and cooperative.
I know cheerleading is the reason I am who I am today and it largely contributes to my acceptance to internships and assistantships. I hope to work in professional sports and everyone around loves a good cheerleading story! I hope the athletes today get as much out of it as I did.
