Correct Way to Start A nonprofit Booster club and rules

What all do I need to do to start a nonprofit booster club. My daughter is on a level 5 cheer team and I would like to raise money to benefit the entire team. Things like paying for the team competition fees, new shoes and some travel expenses. Just confused as to what I need to do so that I do it correctly.

The first step is making by-laws, assign a board of directors, fill out the 501-c and wait. It's a long process but well worth it.
