Sportsmanship

Recently i've had some thoughts about sportsmanship and thought i'd share to see if anyone else felt the same way...

Over the last few years I've noticed a trend in teams/programs/gyms focusing on sportsmanship and although this is a really good thing, I think that it often defeats the whole purpose. Croaking "good luck, good luck, good luck, good luck!" like frogs, to every team/person that walks by just makes the whole purpose of "good luck" worthless and pointless.

A lot of gyms boast and "advertise" that they have good sportsmanship, but instead of just having it show through their interactions with others, some almost use it as another thing that they can compete with other gyms with. Instead of saying "that team isn't very good, we're way better than this team" i'v heard people say "this team has way worse people and worse sportsmanship than us"...But how is it good sportsmanship to talk like that about others? Isn't it even worse since that's attacking the actual people not just their performance? (even though the performance is what we're actually supposed to be competing with...)

Does anyone else feel this way? Or notice the irony of showing good "sportsmanship" by putting other people down?

Since when is promoting good sportsmanship a bad thing. Teaching your kids to act polite and in a matter that reflects not only on themselves but on the gym they represent in my book is great. If you feel it is not sincere, then ignore it. Sounds to me that your problem is not with the behavior but with a particular gym or organization.

Nope, its really not directed at an individual person or gym. I've seen/heard a lot of people from a variety of places putting down other gyms for anything besides their performance and assuming that thats okay because they're good sports just because they don't put down their performance/skills.

Of course good sportsmanship is a good thing! Its never a bad thing to be polite. I was raised that way and don't believe otherwise. But if you look at the second part of what i wrote i was really just reflecting on the irony of someone saying they're a sport and that they don't put down others and at the same time putting down others for that very reason.

I'm not trying to attack anyone or anything like that...i just noticed this and was reflecting on it and wondered if anyone had noticed/thought about it this way.

Thank you, someone, for pointing out the hypocrisy that does seem to exist, more often lately for some reason. Some folks preach good sportmanship, and then turn around and make comments about such things as uniforms they find immoral, behavior at competitions during awards, personal type attacks that have nothing to do with the teams' performances on the stage, which is what cheerleading competitions are supposed to be about - a team's performance on the stage vs. another team's performance. You are given points for what you can do ON THE STAGE. When we see an opposing team do great things on the stage, we give them kudos and compliment them on it. And sure, when they're not so great, we may talk about that too, but it's always about their performances, nothing else. It would be nice if we could all keep that in mind.

On that note, I'd like to say Motions Co-ed advance, your performance was awesome at AB.
