I definitely agree with that, but I don't think it's gym hopping that causes it. I think right now, there are WAYYYYY too many different divisons. USASF should consider getting rid of things like limited coed. Because really, having a few guys on your team doesn't give you a huge advantage.

Actually we use to have more divisions a few years ago.  Anyone remember the Prep divisions?  We actually had more competition them.

Gyms make up teams based on those who show up at try outs so when people leave or come late it changes the team that was intended. I think that gym owners and coaches create the strongest teams, thats right this is a team sport. If the ones that were created at try outs were actually the ones that competed all levels not just five would be exciting.

I find that most athletes are placed at the correct level at Gym A but go to Gym B hoping to be placed on a higher level team, not because they were unhappy where they originally tried out.

Be honest, if you are a 1, 2, 3, 4, be the best 1, 2, 3, 4 that you can possibly be and quit demanding to be placed on a higher level or you are going to leave.

I feel if there was a little bit more loyalty from athletes and that developed together year after year you would have many strong programs as opposite to everyone jumping to where they feel the grass is greener.

This gym hopping has created far less competition. I am tired of paying to compete in divisions of two.

I think that it is important that parents take their time and shop around to make sure the gym that they want to be apart of is right for them. Many gyms will have you thinking that they are one thing when in fact they really are not what they seem. For example some gyms would like you to think that their numbers have double but what they are not saying is that half of the kids that are enrolled they are attending for free. Any gym can double their numbers if they offer free! Also I think it is important to do your back ground on coaches and owners this is your money and a lot of it. Why cant you ask questions as far as the stability of the gym finances? Just like if you are renting a house and the home owner wasn't paying the mortgage and they come in a foreclose on you...well what if you are paying your cheer dues and the owner isn't paying for the unit and they evict the company what if you are not comfortable with that gym and want to leave but you cant because you are now stuck with them because of the new rule. (please dont get me wrong I love the new rule because my gym has been a victim of gym hoppers) What do you do? If you are at a cross roads you should think about having your child tumble during the summer and maybe do stunting privates until you find what is the best fit for you and your family.

I respectfully diagree that gym hoping caused less competition.  I am all for gym hoping.  Girls learn new skills and it keeps owners on their toes. We live in a free market, competitive society, so bring it on!  Do you always shop at the same store because of loyalty?  If a store changes its products or doesn't have what you need, you go elsewhere.  How would gym hoping possibly create less competition? That makes no sense to me. I think there are way too many competitions with organizers trying to make a fast buck. In what other sport do you have 20,000 "National Champions?"

I agree 1,000,000 percent on this and have been saying so since they introduced the leveling system.

As for the gym hopping I am so excited for this new rule...It is a problem in our sport and I am glad that the USASF is taking a stand.  Recruiting HURTS our business.  Gym owners should be doing all we can to attract NEW consumers to our sport not just take for others.

So I think we need to define this better....

Gym hopping : When parents are looking to use thier dollars to find a better placement for thier SUZIE....When gym owners promise free or reduced tuition to steal another gyms athletes.....When you don't make the team you "should have" so you go where you are apreciated more.....When gym owners use athletes, parents, and facbook or twitter, etc. to pursuade athletes form another gym to leave and come to them

Consumers right to shop: Your season is over, your bill is paid, and you choose to try out somewhere else.

gym hopping/recruiting BADno

I have been a hairstylist for many years and my attitude with regards to clients is always as such.....I really do not want anyone who doesnt want to be in my chair....if a gym owner is doing everything they can to make a great place to cheer and someone wants to leave....why would you want them? Some people want to leave for many different reasons...I am for setting a deadline and after that, no switching...it needs to be better outlined than last year.....and gym owners...people are rarely tied up and forced to leave...if they can be lured away...like a cross lover....probably did you a favor...right? I just can't see wanting anyone at your gym who really doesnt want to be there???

I don't really see it like that, however I understand your point about not wanting someone who does not want to be there. But that is not what this is about. Going to a hair dresser or store or restaurant these are mostly chosen when the need arises so it lends itself to switching your choice more often. In the case of a team, you have committed to a year long journey and leaving and violating that trust should come with consequences.

The rule does not stop anyone from leaving a gym at any time. If you don't like the gym then either finish your contract or pay the fee and break it and go to the gym you want. What the rule prevents is "gym hopping" and "recruiting" during the season. If you leave you just cannot compete with a new gym until the following season. They do this in HS and College Football, basketball, baseball, etc.

PCM Coach--Some questions for you--what do you mean by parents using their money to find a better placement?  Are you talking about some sort of bribe? That's terrible! ....Are you saying you don't think it's okay for girls to try out at several gyms, in May, then make a decision based on their best placement?  I don't think a girl should switch teams in the middle of the season (unless there really is an issue and both gym/athlete thinks it's appropriate to leave), but I do think it's okay to shop around during April/May. I don't consider this gym hopping, do you? Also, I see that some gyms are giving reduced tuition based on certain skills, but this was set up in advance of tryouts.  Are you not in favor of this? I would be really interested in hearing your thoughts. Thank you.

First to your scenario of trying out at different gyms...if it is to see the organization, meet the coaching staff and owners, see the facilities then no I think that is appropriate and smart under the new rules. If it is to purely see what team you will be on, then my opinion is that is not OK. Effectively you have done no harm to a particular team so the ultimate decision between right and wrong for that is your choice, but no that would not fall under my definition of "gym hopping" just bad form IMO.

What I mean by using your dollars to get a better placement is not a bribe but rather the way I see it when you are placed on a team at one gym and because you think that team is "below" you, the family bolts to a gym that will accommodate their wishes without regard to proper skill assessments.

Finally as for published reduced rates for skills...that is a business choice by the gym so if that works financially for them then have at it, not my place to say anything.

Every family/consumer has the responsibility to choose the gym that is right for them but once you join...finish what you start....
Good luck to all during this season...LET'S KEEP THIS AMAZING SPORT GROWING !!!

I have to say, I think it is amazing that OC has remained a single location gym and still has 11 teams this season, with 7 being large teams. Especially competing against the multiple location gyms in the area. Congratualtions OC! Seems to have a lot of loyal famlies. Good luck this season! I love watching your teams!
