personally I think that gyms SHOULDN'T have you pay up front/super expensive try-out fees. As a college age athlete, I do pay for myself and I don't want to waste my money cheering at a gym for a season that I end up being unhappy with. I think tryouts should work kind of like college apps - there's a tryout day and a separate "commitment day." I'm an athlete, but I'm also a consumer and I should have the option to make a choice of where I want to be without a ton of fees. Just saying, it's important to be at a gym where you feel like home! =]
torycf brings up a good discussion topic. how do parents and coaches feel about trying out at several gyms? I guess as a parent if I'm paying all that money I want to make sure she's on the right level. I think it should be fine to tryout at different places, but I guess not everyone feels like i do.
I think it is important to try out at different places if you aren't sure which one is "right" for you. Make the decision now during tryouts rather than half way through the season when you realize you hate it and quit.
I don't think it is fair that gyms require a paid committment at tryouts. What if it turns out that a gym only get the athletes to field a team that is 2 or 3 levels beneath you? Should a Senior 4 athlete be held to a Senior 2 team because he/she went to tryouts?

I think that if the usasf is bounding kids so firmly to a gym once they compete....then shop around and make sure before you sign anything...and a gym who required me to commit before I am able to shop around.....is out! Thankfully...we love our gym and are staying....but we had to make this exact call last season...it is not easy but do your homework and it works out great!!!!

so i have a question...
how do you "KNOW" if a gym is for you when you are just trying out.. you show up and they ask "okay, lets see your jumps, tumbling, stunting, motions!" and you show your skills.. and you walk out do you say to your self.. "THIS IS THE PERFECT GYM FOR ME!!!"
im just asking because ive been with my gym since i started cheering but i came in mid season so idk the feeling and what an athlete thinks?

Vegas Cheer Authority just finished tryouts last night. We had over 200 athletes in attendance! For the upcoming 11-12 season VCA will be competing 10 teams (including 4 large teams) We are all so excited to see the explosion of growth in our program as we enter our third year with more than double the athletes we had last season! :)

Gyms make up teams based on those who show up at try outs so when people leave or come late it changes the team that was intended. I think that gym owners and coaches create the strongest teams, thats right this is a team sport. If the ones that were created at try outs were actually the ones that competed all levels not just five would be exciting.
I find that most athletes are placed at the correct level at Gym A but go to Gym B hoping to be placed on a higher level team, not because they were unhappy where they originally tried out.
Be honest, if you are a 1, 2, 3, 4, be the best 1, 2, 3, 4 that you can possibly be and quit demanding to be placed on a higher level or you are going to leave.
I feel if there was a little bit more loyalty from athletes and that developed together year after year you would have many strong programs as opposite to everyone jumping to where they feel the grass is greener.
This gym hopping has created far less competition. I am tired of paying to compete in divisions of two.

I definitely agree with that, but I don't think it's gym hopping that causes it. I think right now, there are WAYYYYY too many different divisons. USASF should consider getting rid of things like limited coed. Because really, having a few guys on your team doesn't give you a huge advantage.

As for the subject of trying different gyms and being loyal to the one you are at: I would say that I will be a loyal as an owner would be to me. The gym I have my children at merged within the last few years. We were promised a lot of "new" things that never happened. I am very dissapointed that rather than carrying through with those promises our gym owner decided to pay every ounce of energy into the level 5 team and not worry about any other team or thing that was promised would be done. Almost all of the teams did not have a good year and have no items that were promised.
So that leaves us to look at other gyms, where there are owners who care about ALL teams not ONLY their level 5+ teams. I am not saying the grass is greener on other side, but what I am saying as a consumer if I am paying 3 thousand dollars a season for my children to compete I will be somewhere that we are going to get the most bang for our buck and be happy- no matter how many gyms we "try out". IMO a tryout is not only for the gym to place our kids but also for us to tryout their coaching abilites and see what we like as parents and consumers!
