RE: Styles of Cheerleading

I think Power has the best tumbling or motions .....and if you want to talk about technique then sbe does not even compare..sorry just my thought. power and motions you don't see bad form or everyone running around unorganized. I also think nelson was one of the first to start adding different things in the tumbling not just the same ole stuff. and he made it clean not a confusing mess on the floor. just my two cents, im not a judge, so don't get all defensive on me now!!

Conversations go from oone thing to another naturally. Don't frett, if you want it back, just bring it up. Ask a question, add a comment. But let people talk about what they want to.

You don't have to have a paticular "style" to be innovative, and as someone who has judged their share of competitions, being innovative is a big key. When I judge, I'm looking for a combination of something new, something clean and something that fufills the requirements. I think that's all pretty much self-explanatory, so I'm not going to get into it.

As for style, I really enjoy everyone having different styles. I don't look at one style being better than another, because if that were true, then everyone would adapt the same style and then cheerleading would start to visually become boring. Personally, I know I have a certain style that I choreograph for, but as a judge, I'm not going to lean more towards my style than any other. As I said above, the team that is the most innovative, clean and fufills the requirements of their division is going to be my pick.

I'm incredibly excited for this upcoming year. I love that so many people are talking Worlds...it's about time everyone in the cheerleading world realizes that up here in Nor Cal, we know how to do it right.

Oh, just wanted to add one thing. The above post, please read it while keeping in mind that I'm not being confrontational or agressive, rather I'm being passive and politely stating my point and opinion. Same with this post. I think sometimes we may read a post and take it the wrong way as we are thinking that it was posted with bad intentions.

And even if something were posted with bad intentions, why would anyone get mad at someone you've never even met or don't even know?

Why do people say on here "thats just my opinion" or "im just saying". Not to be blunt, but obviously its your opinion, because its a MESSAGE BOARD. The whole point of a message board is to state , discuss, and debate from time to time. If you have to qualify everything you say, then you must feel bad for saying it. Be proud of what you say because it has thought and insight.

I agree with Nelson on the fact that every style is beneficial. I also want to comment on South Bay elite. They bring it to the mat everytime they compete. They have this unbelievable energy when they are at competition. Good luck to them at all the competitions. I am glad Nor-cal is having some diversity in style though. It was getting a bit repetitive. I love clean, but having some flash is good too. I feel it gives the audience something to really watch!

I think that people say "it's just my opinion" because there are alot of people who tend to get pushed out of shape with what they say, and I agree with Nelson, they shouldn't!! I see too many harsh responses towards people on this board, as if the person who they're responding to thinks they're an expert. I am "assuming" that people state "it's just my opinion" so they're not looked upon as someone who thinks "they know it all"

Thank you Nelson......."clean"......enough said!!!!!

Clean is definitely something I like to see. Having tons of tumbling and stunting is expected, but if it is really sloppy.......that's a "style" I don't enjoy watching. Perfecting those basics brings these teams a long way in the end!!

As a former cheerleader from South Bay and current cheerleader of Motions, I can very clearly see both sides of each argument suggested. Being clean... innovative... creating a masterpiece, or fufilling requirements...

Yes, South Bay is sometimes sloppy. We knew when we were sloppy, in fact we weren't even drilled in being clean, such as teams like (from past reference) Focus, and even now Motions. I hear things have changed this year, and I believe what they're saying. South Bay is not a bad team. I am in no way talking down on South Bay.

Now Motions is a very clean team. I dont think I can stress how obsessed Nelson is with timing, sharpness, and being clean. However, our stunts do not quite relate to South Bay, not yet at least. Nelson's perfection before progression rule in relation to Roy's chuck it then clean it rule is unknown when a judge sees a routine.

Both teams are great, having both different styles of cheer... Only time will tell before teams compete against each other to see just what judges want to see...

It's all a matter of opinion.. I, myself, would rather see a clean routine at the appropriate level. When you have kids throwing double fulls and landing sideways, its not only messy, it's dangerous. Double downs to the stomach make me cringe!

Anyway, I like the clean style. On the other hand, with a clean routine, it is easy to catch the mistakes. With a sloppy routine that is all over the place, mistakes are made and you can't even tell. I guess thats the beauty of the messy style?

All in all, I think its great that different gyms or organizations have their own style. I think cheerleading wouldn't be half as fun if we all went out and did the same thing.

Well, goodluck to everyone this year. I can't wait until the first competition! It really looks like all of the gyms are "stepping it up" this year. Hopefully NorCal can come together and make a name for ourselves.

See everyone around!
