According to Power's website....They have a Junior 2 in Modesto and Sacramento and a Senior 4.2 in Modesto and Sacramento. You have to assume everyone 14yrs and below are on those Junior 2 teams and the 15yrs + girls are on the Senior 4.2.
This means much older girls are performing the harder level stunts. I think they got this new division right by doing this.
POWER only has kids younger than 15 on SR 4.2 if they have both standing and pass back handsprings, and serve a function / role for the team. In Sacramento all members 14 and under are on a different team. If they have body awareness and the tumbling skill, they are given the opportunity to double up on 4.2 for training purposes, if they so choose. However, If they cannot hang with the team and the stunting skills required, they are removed from 4.2 and will cheer only for JR 2 / SR 3.
I think like other divisions that had a certain intention in mind, this one will go in a different direction. Example, and correct me if Im wrong, the original intention of the open divisions was to help small gyms. But what happened? We started seeing all the large gyms fielding teams in this division. Now the open divisions are gone. Along comes 4.2, whose intention from what Ive been reading is to help draw in high school girls who cant tumble, but for some reason are able to do level 4 stunts. (raise your hand if you have seen athletes who can tumble but cant do stunts?? so why not 2.4?) Anyway, now we will see gyms putting younger girls in this division, which again defeats the original purpose. Will 4.2 go away like the open divisions? I hope so. JMO
Correct me if I'm wrong but who ever said the 4.2 division was created only for the older (15+) kids? It started last season as Senior 'OPEN' 4.2. If the powers that be created for older kids only it wouldn't have been open.
The more I think about this division the more I am beginning to dislike this division.
IF the intent of this division was to give the high school aged kids a chance to compete because of their lack of tumbling talents, then the division needs to have an age restriction on it. The age should be 14-18 years old only. Realistically the division should be a temporary one anyway. If this division was thrown out there because it was to satisfy these high schoolers than everyone younger then them will have out tumbled them in a couple of years when they are at the high school level.
We all know that all these divisions have wiggle room. Teams will not stay true to the intent of this division. There will be young little flyers and gyms will double up with true level 4 and 5 cheerleaders so they can tumble those beautiful flip flops and the flyers will be doubled up to see those wonderful kick fulls.
I guess time will tell and we will be able to determine if gyms are doubling up the higher level cheerleaders to push the limits of the 4.2.
to be honest i really don't like this division either. whenever i watch a 4.2 routine the stunts are shaky and are barely level four material. but i like the idea of an age restriction on this division. because it seems gyms will just use tiny girls who could be on youth to fly "level four stunts."
Tracy, I couldnt agree with you more. While the intent might have been to accomodate high school athletes who couldnt tumble, I can almost guarantee this is not how it will be used. Not as long as there are no age restrictions, and no restrictions on crossovers.

my opinion is just from the teams that i have seen. i'm sure that there are amazing level 4.2s out there. and this year will probably be better than last as it isn't a brand new division anymore.
Just my opinion....I don't like this division either because there's no reason to have it there's too many divisions already and then whats next 5.2, and I also agree that there should be both age and crossover restrictions.
