International Cheer Union, the Real Worlds?

So I go to Varsity today to check out coverage of worlds to see if they will have anything.  I find the ICU.....perplexed, maybe I am out of the loop, but wasn't that the real world championship.  Teams from all over the world were represented.

With that being said, why could they not compete this weekend at Worlds or are they and this was something different.

So technically the Cheerleading Worlds hosted by the USASF is now a glorified national competition?  What two totally different types of messages this is sending.  I am truly confused to why they are having two different events, so these people competing today believe they are at worlds and then the people on Sat and Sunday compete at Worlds also.....any thoughts.  What is this saying about the US and its need to make it more about them then the other countries????  Do you feel that it takes away from The Cheerleading Worlds if they are not represented by the countries that competed at the ICU?

Its exactly like the teams in Los Angeles at IALC and the teams in Vegas at US Finals; all of them think they are competing for best in the nation when they arent even going against each other for it.  Its just like that except at a higher level, and its all about money, sadly.  But we the consumers can take control of this if we are all on the same page and decide which one to choose for level 5s and which one to choose for lower levels.

In order for cheer to get into the Olympics there needs to be a World Championship.  That World Championship needs to be represented by "x" number of countries (not sure of the exact amount) for so many years before they will consider it for an Olympic Sport.  You cannot represent your "club" at a World Championship.  It's about representing your Country.  That being said, you can only have one team per country represented.  If that weren't the rule USA would get Gold/Bronze/Silver in Basketball almost every year.  The ICU is an attempt to get cheerleading into the Olympics with an actual World Championship.

Yes I understand that, it is just that I think having two is silly and our worlds as we know it is not what I want to see, I would rather see the one represented equally by all countries.  =)

Fun2Cheer you beat me to it.  You are exactly right.  There has to be an event that the Olympic committee can come in and asset the sport and determine if there is truly an interest around the world.  I can't remember the exact number of countries that must participate in the sport but I think it's somewhat in the 30 or more range.  Does anyone know how many countries are actually representing the ICU right now?

That's crazy because the ICU should be at Worlds this weekend cuz that's where the best teams are this weekend...

I never have thought of Worlds as a World Championship.  It is a nationals, a true nationals.  I always though it was smug on our part to call it Worlds.  This sport still has a long way to develop both national and internationally before a true Worlds can be held.

What World Championship do you know of that is help is the same country and arena every single year?  Only Cheer.

Things are changing but the road to being a true recognized sport is still a long bumpy one.  When the federation and its members run things and not companies, Cheerleading will be able to be a true sport.

Agree 100%.   So the confusion is in the names and perception/assumptions as to what these competitions really are.  I remember talking to a mom once who was fairly new to cheer and she was talking about how her daughters team won Jamz Nationals the year prior; she said proudly her daughter was on a team that was first in the nation.  I just smiled.  Worlds is a true nationals for level 5s, and either IALC or USFinals will someday be a true nationals for lower levels.

ICU is here.  It's been an incredible weekend with the ICU championship on Friday and the rest of Worlds on Saturday and Sunday.  They are both Worlds championships, but have different standards.

I'll be glad to discuss this more, but I gotta crash.

Talk to everyone tomorrow.
