How About Best Of Both Days

Just wanted to throw this out there, I thought it might make for interesting conversation.  It's been brought up before and I can't remember what the justification was, but I've always wondered why 2-day competitions can't just take the highest score of both days?  Some teams do really well their first day, and then fall apart their 2nd, and for others it's vice-versa, but if both have one really bad day, why should it matter which day?  Should the 2nd day really be scored higher?  I've never understood it, maybe someone can enlighten me.   I'm just reading the posts from Dallas and  it just seems to me the routines that were clean today should be rewarded by more than just 1/3 of the score, but maybe I'm the only one who feels that way.

I agree....I think there should be at least a 50-50 split opposed to a 30-70 or 20-80

Obviously different event producers have different reasons for how they structure the splits.

Cheersport uses 50-50. They want the clean, consistent teams to win.

NCA uses 20-80. They want to maintain the "feel" of prelims and finals. Since everyone now makes it through to finals, putting 80% on the second day, gives it a hit or go home feel.

I like having differences from comp to comp.

i like it when its 40 60 because a team still has to rock it both days but there is a little room for tiny errors the first day and then they can really step it up the next day.

I guess it is just a matter of preference.   In my opinion, especially for teams that have travelled, it's impressive to go out there that first day and nail it.  To do so well the first day and have it be only worth 20% just doesn't seem fair; it's the same amount of hard work and commitment.  Yet the teams that have a strong second day are most likely the ones who will win.   If so much emphasis is on the 2nd day, I don't see the point of 2-day competitions.   At least the 50-50 split rewards both days equally.  Again, just a matter of preference.

Look at the Olympics. You can run or swim in the prelims to qualify for finals but it is your time in finals that determines your ultimate placement. Diving, gymnastics etc. The scores you get in the early days helps you qualify but are erased and you start with a clean slate for finals.

When my team hits both days I'm in favor of the split score. When my team drops the first day I'm in favor of just the second day counting. When my team hits day 1 and falls day 2 I'm in favor of the best score counting.

Anyone know where I can find that competition?

But that is when day 1 is officially called "prelims".....spirit sports and jamz your are just performing twice....if there were an elimination after the first day and it truly was a "prelim" then I would understand that point of view. But to include both days score just at a 30-70 split does not tell you who was best overall...just who pulled it off on day 2

Exactly.   If everyone makes it to finals, there really isn't a prelims.

totally agree! But can you imagine if all 2 day comps had the rule that only the top 2, 3, 5, 25% teams got to even compete on the second day? I know some do have that policy but those are the elite competitions that teams are just thrilled to even qualify for (kinda like the Olympics) I don't think many parents would favor all 2 day comps being run this way.

I am not saying that I like the 40,60 or 25, 75 split especially when the split works against our team LOL!

I agree...I don't think all 2 day comps should have prelims but if they don't I think the scores from both days should be equally weighted....the teams work hard both days and mistakes one day shouldn't be more detrimental than mistakes on another day.

I'm not saying there should be prelims for these non-Worlds competitions where some go home after day 1.   Just saying I personally don't like so much emphasis on one particular day.  Also in the past we've seen injuries occur after day 1 and it's a shame because for the most part that day didn't even count.

its like that so all the dumb teams who stay up late partying or goofing around too much, eat it and lose it for their team.

I'm right there with ya. I personally like the idea of a team's highest score counting; however, if the competition company wants to count both days, then I think it should be 50/50.

I'm not aware of any comps (other than Worlds) that still have prelims and finals. Anybody?

Also, I like different companies doing it different ways. Let's you pick and choose which one you want to attend.

I think USA still has prelims and finals.  I haven't been in a few years.  Can anyone confirm?

To me, it is more like the first and second half of a football game.

However, I personally like 1/3 & 2/3.

USA has Prelims, Semi-Finals and Finals.  Teams can qualify to go directly to Semi-Finals at one of the regional competitions.  If not, they must compete at Prelims on day 1 (Friday), to qualify for Semi's on Day 2 (Saturday).  Finals are on Day 3 (Sunday).

The breakdown from the USA website is as follows:

For Semi-Finals, all divisions (excluding Group Stunt) with 2 or more teams from Semi-Finals in them advance to Finals.

For the Tiny, Mini, Youth and Junior age divisions, if a Semi-Finals division has 10 or more teams, then 25% of those teams advance to Finals (Therefore, 1-9 teams in these divisions, 2 advance to Finals 10 or more teams, 25% advance to Finals).

For the Senior divisions, if a Semi-Finals division has 6 or more teams, then 45% of those teams advance to Finals (Therefore, 1-5 teams in these divisions, 2 advance to Finals 6 or more teams, 45% advance to Finals).

For the Cheerleading and Dance Worlds qualifying divisions, all teams advance to Finals, regardless of the number of teams who are in Semi-Finals.

Preliminary scores are only used to determine a teams advancement to Semi-Finals. Each team with an average score of 80 points or greater regardless of penalties will advance to Semi-Finals. Semi-Final scores will carry over to Finals, with 40% of the score from Semi-Finals and 60% of the score from Finals being added together to obtain the final placement in a division. For Semi-Finals and Finals divisions, the judges scores are averaged and any deductions/penalties are subtracted from that score.

The first half/second half of a football game is an interesting way to look at it.   The only problem is a touchdown in the 2nd half is worth 3 times as much.   smile.gif

Thinking about it I do prefer 50-50 because if you took the highest score from both days, and a team had one great day and one terrible day, it doesn't reward the teams that had two back-to-back great days, and I do think they should be rewarded.  I think Cheersport has the right idea (50-50) and I wish the local 2-day competitions in our area did the same.  I agree it's nice to have choices, but other than Cheersport I am not aware of any that do this kind of split; they all score the 2nd day higher.
