How many gyms use choreographers?

I've been lurking on this board for some time, but have never posted.  The last few days I've had this question that I finally decided to register and ask...

I'm not asking who you hire, what you spend, etc.  I'm just curious how many coaches choreograph their own routines versus how many hire someone else.

I hope this isn't too personal of a question, I was just curious, so I'm going to do a poll so that people can answer truly anonymously if they'd like.  TIA!!

I don't think it's an either/or answer. At ACE, Happy brings in outside choreographers for almost every team's dance. However, most of the rest of the routine is done as a collaberation among coaches in the gym. Also, as we have coaches from around the country visit the gym and watch practices, they'll make suggestions that we incorporate.

We use one for our Level 5 Dances only.  The rest of the level 5 teams routine and all other teams routines are done in-house by our staff!

Cheers

As a  parent there is nothing I am perplexed about more than paying for outside choreographers....

Why? I just don't get it, where is the in house talent?  It's like burger king, if they hired all cooks who would be the servers and take orders?confuse Why do these coaches not make up thier own routinues, dances, stunts, jump sections?

Parents- have you ever been sitting at a comp and every team is doing the same thing, no orignality, no diffrence in order, its like open tumbling, jumps, scorpians, pyramid, double downs, dance......yawn

Come on if I had a gym and a bunch of coaches your not getting hired unless you specialize in something!!!!

Besides who uses the big choreographers..... ugh how about EVERYBODY!

I'M SORRY JMO

Outside choreographers bring in fresh, innovative ideas.  They bring in something out of the inhouse comfort zone.  I see not problem with bringing in choreographers.   The inhouse coaches should however have the knowledge of progression....taking that routine and making it more difficult, changing the routine because some one is sick, hurt, dropped because of personal reasons....whatever.  Evaluate your score sheets, if the score sheets are saying add more and this is your personal routine and you thought it was bomb, then maybe it's time to get some outside help.  Do what works for your gym.

Well in many sports and businesses people bring in "consultants" and or assistants to ensure a strong product. The same goes for cheerleading. Brining in a fresh style is good for your kids and this is all stars, not a half time routine. All stars are all about cutting edge tricks, dances, stunts and pushing the envelope. Why do you think their are choreographers for shows, concerts and performances. You are getting a big visual appeal for the audience. Yes there are gyms that do alot of their own material, but most teams who bring in outside people always seem to have cutting edge routines, not just skills routines. You are right, all coaches can make up material, but if its visually appealing and fun for the team/audience is a different ball game.

I think you will find that the teams you think do it on their own actually have people come in.  Alot of times they will choreograph for other teams and then bring someone in for theirs.  I guess its just the nature of the beast.

My gym actually uses both. Coaches and a paid coregrapher. Its the best of both worlds; an experienced coregrapher but have your gym's original flair! Very convenient nod.gif

there are so few outside choreographers in the cheer world..... so we all keep using the same ones and don't get me wrong they are all very very talented, but each have a signiture style so it becomes apparent when a team has used the same choreographer.

We use in house only. It is one of the areas where we save parents money by not having to hire people from outside to do either choreography or music. We do it all ourselves and can change it whenever we want. No matter how many changes are made they are never charged a choreography fee or a music fee, ever. If we brought in someone else, obviously we would have to charge them.

If a program chooses to bring in others that is cool. Although I admit I often wonder if it is used (by some) as a status symbol - like the gym must be good because so and so did their choreography or so and so did their music. They only did what you paid them to do. I am quite sure that the "top" programs have their pick of who wants to come in and do their choreography and music. And there is no lack of choreographers hanging their shingle out. - just everyone wants the biggest names.

Our gym is one of the top 25 gyms in the country and we have an in house coach that does our choreography for all of our teams and our music. However, he is hired by out of state teams to do their choreography. He also continues to chande the routines through out the season to make them more exciting and more diffucult.
