my shoulders and back really hurt

i need your help everyone.  my team is going to its first competition this weekend.  i'm so nervous and scared.  nervous because it's time to compete but scared because i don't think i can keep basing this flyer for the entire season.  i hurt i really hurt.  the directors tell me to suck it up but i don't know if i can do it.  my mom has gone in and talked to the staff about switching people around but they always say no.  the hard thing is that i dont think its ever going to change because the flyer is the sister of the coach.  its so hard to lift this person because she is the biggest flyer in the gym and was one of our biggest bases last season.  she just too heavy.  at this rate i am going to injury myself and then someone else will have to rotate in and its going to happen to them.   lots of people have tried to base this flyer and decided not to join our gym because she is too heavy.  i don't know what to do.  she is a relative of the coach.  is there a way to get coaches to stop giving their sisters special treatment and let her know that she cant fly.

I think you should quit before you hurt yourself.

I have to agree that you should quit that team before you are seriously hurt. Especially if your parents have already expressed a concern and if you are really in a lot of pain. sometimes unfortunately as coaches you dont want to lose your top person who has been flying for a long time and looks good in the air, but as a it is time for a change, professional and good coach you make those changes even if you dont want to.  maybe the coach is not nec. keeping her because she is a relative, but maybe because she has been the top person for so long(just another way to look at it)
but in any case if you are continuing to get hurt and the owner is not clued in on then it may be best for you to move on as well.
your body is more important than pleasing this gym.
are there other gyms near you? if not commuting to a gym is better than hurting yourself permantly

agree, you need to quit now.  Find another gym.

I am not sure quitting is the right way to go.  You have time and money invested in this program and this late in the season (as we are getting ready to head into comp season, will make it hard for you to get onto a team)  I would recommend that you and your mom and or dad (I sometimes think Dads have more power of persuasion than mom when it comes to these kind of things) ask for a meeting with the owner and coach together on a day that you are not there to practice, so you all have time to discuss this.  Do you have bruises?? If so document them, explain to the coaches that you are getting ready to walk away because you are afraid of  injury.  I know as a coach, I hated having to change routines right before a huge competition and I never wanted to lose a girl.  But I also recognized that saftey for the team was my first responsibility.  Suggest options.  Can you change with the back spot?  Don't accuse them of playing favorites, it will only get  them defensive.  If this doesn't work then walk away.  Good Luck.

This is an interesting topic...something that I am having to deal with as a parent...

What do you do if your child is getting hurt in practice and you don't see things changing or changing quickly enough?

Quit, do the gym a favor.

Good advice on the favorites.  You don't want to start someone on the defensive when you are trying to get them to listen to you.  I am a mom at the gym all the time, and found that my husband gets more 'respect' when he talks to the coach because the coach treats me all buddy-buddy and my husband is all 'business'.   Good luck.  You are going to have your body for a life time and need to take care of it.

I would definatly think about the intentions of the coaches.  To me, it seems that they are all about competeing and not about the health of the kids in the gym.  I would think about finding another gym who will respect you.  Also, go to the doctor and get checked out.  If there is something going on besides muscles, you need to get that taken care of.  While you are in there, get a note from the doctor stating that you cannot base.  If the coaches don't take the advice from the doctor, then that is the final straw.  Get your little sweets cheecks out the door and into a new one.  It is not worth hurting your self to the point where you can't even cheer or do other sports.  Been there, Done that!

I do not want to get into body image but how much of a difference is there between your flyer and the others, is there a specific reason why the coach feels like she should be up there compared to someone smaller.  I know you said she is family but maybe you should try to talk to her and say, hey listen I think you are a great teammate and pretty flyer, I just dont think that I can base you anymore.  Kinda like a bf/gf breakup. wink  Maybe she does not even know you are upset, sadly enough coaches know when you are flying someone that should not be in the air.  I would go to the doctor and have him check you, then bring in a note and say that you cant base her anymore.  Stunt groups are like a recipe, sometimes groups dont work.  Be firm but supportive of your teams goals.

I agree with you.  This is the most fair and reasonable way to handle this...and yes, by all means bring rationale dad along.  If things don't change then leave the gym.  At least they can't say that you just "walked away."  You sound like a committed person.  I'm sure you'd be able to find another gym who would appreciate your dedication and treat you with more respect.  Good luck and keep us posted.

Maybe the directors are asking you to suck it up because you complain a lot. Maybe you thinking your back is hurt is really just sore muscles. Maybe you'd rather be up in the air instead of your current flyer.

We're only hearing one side of the story. I'm curious to hear the other side.

i don't think i complain alot. i only mentioned one time that i was sore. i am tired of basing this girl.  she was a base in our gym last season and is bigger than some of the girls in the gym.  its just getting to hard to base her.  we all try not to say anything just because we know the flyer is the sister of one of the directors but everyone takes about it in our gym.  we have practice tonight and i don't want them to fix the routine now.  i just hope they will understand when i tell them after the competition on sunday that i don't want to base her anymore.  but the sad thing is noone else wants to base her either.

Only you know how badly your back hurts.  Are you just learning to base?  If you have discussed this with your parents and they agree that you need to speak with the owners with their assistance, then go for it.  Don't listen to these people on this board.  Don't risk injury because people who don't even know you or your situation told you to "suck it up."  It's no one else's call but yours and your parents.

I wholeheartedly agree with you!  My daughter, who flys and bases, was double teaming last year and on one of the teams she was basing a girl bigger than she was.  She was having chronic back/lat pain and I was taking her back and forth to the chiro to help with the issue.  Because she was not able to rest the injuries they weren't healing and it started to affect her tumbling.  My daughter wasn't a complainer at all but I finally spoke to the coach and said that I couldn't take the chance of having her end up with a lingering lifelong problem due to basing someone bigger than her and I asked that she be taken off of that particular team.  Your longterm health is much more important than "sucking it up" and ending up with a chronic problem.

after stunting ask your flyer to pull up on her weight or tighten up a bit more. that can take some weight off too. but if that doesn't work that have a talk with your coach. before practice one day go up and say my back has been hurting really badly lately. is there a chance that i can backspot instead of base. don't say that your flyer is too heavy because that can sound rude but ask your coach to switch you somewhere else. if all fails take a break or move gyms. you need to think about your health too.

You my also want to try lifting weights yourself to strengthen you core-back-legs arms and shoulders. Also try talk to your parents about finding a good chiropractor.

Yes, that is it - have your parents get you a firggin chiropractor so that you can life the heavy flyer for the sport you pay thousands of dollars to participate in.

That makes total sense.
