Did anyone else attend this comp this past weekend? Having attended both youth and all star comps for the past 10 years, I was extremely disappointed with this comp There was absolutley no "crowd involvment" with the kids except for the cha cha slide and chicken dance on day 2...there were no vendors whatsoever, which meant no chance for the kids to have any shirt, sweatshirt or any momento of the competition. For some of the girls (like my daughter), her team doesn't compete outside the regular season and this was the only comp they will attend this year and it didn't feel special at all. They didn't even get a simple ribbon and they got 1st place! Also, day 2 was supposed to be a youth chamionship and there were no other teams in attendance except the same ones from the day before and even some of those didn't come back...
Just feeling a little let down I guess, expected better from Power hosting
wow. maybe they couldnt get any vendors. but comps should always have vendors. at least one stand with shirts and sweatshirts. and as for ribbons. even when my team got third we got ribbons at least. did they at least hand out trophies?
But what do you expect the competition only cost $35.00 for two days. American Championships in San Jose is $85 for two days
Yep, you get what you pay for. That's youth league cheerleading. If you want a real experience join an all-star program.
That is a dirt cheap competition. Power probably just broke even on this competition. THere are a ton of restrictions on what you can an can not do to be in compliance with the venue rental. Are they UNION supported if they are then you can only bring in vendors that are also in conjunction with a UNION. And the last time I checked, more cheerleading gyms are not UNIONIZE nor are apparel companies. There are so many more guidelines I'm sure.

I deffinatly dont agree. You must have not seen some of these youth teams latley. There are some that can kick some all star booty. They deserve just as much as the all star teams they do work just as hard.

Well said! I was soooooo impressed with Folsom, Granite Bay and Oakridge! They do work just as hard, plus, most practice on a patch of grass somewhere outside~ I would like to see most all star cheerleaders throw those same tricks on a flat mat, more less grass! I have 2 all star cheerleaders and let me tell you, my little youth baby is out there in the heat or cold, whichever it may be, twice as many days a week as my all stars girls!
I do not agree with the above poster that said you have to be all star to have "a real experience". We have a very high quality youth program that could go toe to toe with any level 2 all star team! And yes, all the kids got "participation" medals the 1st day, but would it have been that much more expensive to slap a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place on the back of at least the top 3 teams medals if you aren't even going to give out a 25 cent ribbon?
As far as the vendors go, cheergyms spirit spectacular was at the same venue last year and had a huge selection of vendors!

Than charge $5 more pp and buy trophies or medals......
Exactly! I don't even think it would be that much! Just eliminate the stupid big single trophy that gets stuck in a shed somewhere and engrave the medal you are already giving out.

Yes, there are rules, and the union is involved when renting the venue, but vendors do not have to be union....If a vendor does not think they will make big money they will not come out. You do not have to be union to sale at an event. And the last time I checked, more cheerleading gyms are not UNIONIZE nor are apparel companies. ThankGod! There are so many more guidelines I'm sure.

After hearing this im glad i decided not to take my youth team
I will say, it was organized and on time, just not very exciting or "special" for the kids...
Well, that's good! I'm sure with POWER trying to get all their teams ready for comp and having this weekend filled with the YOUTH comps, they had a lot on their plate! I'm also sure if John was to read these maybe things will be different next year! As long as the girls had fun and they did their best is what counts!!

I don't know what "bubble" you are from, but none of the youth teams have full time access to mats...my daughters teams gets to rotate into a cafeteria with mats one night a week for practice, as I know is the case at Folsom, Oakmont and many other youth programs.
As far as tumbling on grass...where exactly is it that high school cheerleaders tumble during football games?

John knew the "timing" of this comp when he bid to get it last year, so being busy is no excuse for a poorly put together competiton. I hope he does make changes next year or decides not to host it.

Some of these youth groups are renting time from All Star gyms to practice before the comps. The girls take tumbling classes from these gyms and others too and for those who can do a round off Back handspring and or tuck on the grass....it's a matter of time before they are hurt. True, I have not seen a High school football game in a while, however that type of tumbling is too hard on the body to be doing it on the hard grass/ground........ and I was not trying to be mean, I was stating a fact...I guess it might have come out wrong! Sorry.
I don't get this... Half of you were not even there! Yes many all star teams would struggle against the top youth program no question! For those of you that don't know the backside! John is directed on what he can and can't do by the league! THere is a cheer facilitator that gives him guidlelines that he has to follow, PERIOD! As far as the vendors, please that is not our main concern and most organizations don't want vendors as it takes away from teh non-profit teams in the league! Everyone is struggling to make money and they don't want it going to outside vendors! So the positive of not going with JAMZ (as everyone has commented on previous posts)! It ran on time, we did not have to be there until 8:00 at night, we had spring warm up floors and tumble tracks. and all the kids got to be on the mats for awards and that was exciting! Not making all the kids sit in the seats and not get the award watching the coaches go on stage! Plenty of seating for everyone and the food by memorial rules can only be done by memorial! Tell me what any other youth organizaiton be it AAYFC, NCSA, SYF or bay area teams that can even come close to beating the teams that were there this weekend, YOU CAN'T! THese teams are throwing level 4 and 5 stunts and tumbling (all within the rules) so if you didn't go to the competition to compete against them then it is your own fault! John you did a great job with what you were able to work with and the limitations you were given, John has never had a bad competition EVER!
so you know all college teams do the same thing as high school and youth correct? My daughter is now cheering in college and HAS to tumble on the the basketball court and the football field! So if your daughter wants to continue cheer outside of all -star get her ready now. I have been to college try-outs and the girls that have only done all star can't handle the emotional trasition of not being on a spring floor and have walked out!
·Yes the competition was only $35 per person for two days.
·Yes everyone received a participation medal on the first day, that is what the presidents of the league voted on having
·Yes every team received a trophy, again that is what the presidents of the organizations of the league wanted.
·Yes there were no vendors at the event, for two reasons.First the poster above is correct UNION.They would have to run any booth put up at the event, I would pay them to run it and they would receive 30% of the sales.I don't know how cheergyms got around it but KUDOS to them.EXAMPLE of Union Fees - $4200 just to put up and take down the lights.Second and probably the main reason is I used the room (Memorial Hall) for an additional warm-up area. That room is where vendors are usually set up, but instead I turned it into an warm-up room. This allowed every organization 24 minutes of warm-up time instead of 16 minutes.Dealing with youth teams I wanted them to have as much preparation time as possible.Compared to the JAMZ competition held the same day at UOP, we offered our participants DOUBLE the warm-up time. This ensures that all participants are warmed up properly and thus making it safer for all.
Things we are proposing for the 2009 competition, November 14 & 15.Of course the decision of what is offered or done rests with the presidents of the youth organizations and not me.I can only suggest something and present the pros and cons of each possibility.
·A Two day competition.Day 1 40% of the score and day 1 placement dictating order of performance for day 2.Day 2 60 % of the score.
·Formatting the two days like this year.Day 1 league championship, but also adding another league in the afternoon and evening (we are already in negotiations with another league).Day 2 Tournament of Champions and Challenge Cup.Top 50 % of teams from Day 1 from both leagues go to TOC and Bottom 50% go to Challenge Cup
I simply put on an event that the presidents requested.I will try and help get some changes implemented, but ultimately the presidents decide. They give me different price points of what they want to pay and give them options to those price points.Yes we can provide more, ribbons, banners, t-shirts etc, but the cost goes up.There is NO OTHER two day event in California that cost only $35.00.
If you are a parent talk to your coordinator or president and let them know you want more and are willing to pay more for it.
As for the event this past weekend it was perfect.
·Every team performed right on time
·Awards were completed ahead of schedule
·There were 24 different champions crowned over the two days from 10 different organizations, AND...Scores were posted online 45 minutes after the competition on Saturday, complete with judge by judge score, deductions and total points.
