Ok just something that has been on my mind lately. With everyone complaining about the economy do you think opening a new cheer gym is a smart move right now? Also do you think that there are already too many in certain areas? There are just so many kids and too many gyms fighting to get new athletes into their programs. Is there really enough kids to go around?
Is there too many gyms.. Yes. Enrollment is down for a lot of gyms. Just from what I've read on this board there are fewer and smaller teams. Look at the level 5 teams from this area. There are not really very many and most are small. I think there are quite a few gyms relying on cross overs this year to make up a full teams. JMO
I have to agree, there are plenty of choices right now and probably not a good time to add even more. If you are less than 30 to 45 minutes away from more than one gym, I would guess the area is tapped out.
I have to say....as a mom from a gym that just opened this year I think it is important for larger cities to have at least two gyms to choose from to keep the businesses honest and legit. If the new gym in our town had not opened my daughters (the oldest is in her 6th year of cheer) would not be cheering this year because I disagree with the coaching style/methods of the other gym in our city. There are some business owners who will take advantage of the fact that there is no competition and will dramatically increase fees while decreasing services because they know their customers have no where else to go. Capitalism is based on the idea that competition forces businesses to provide better services....and I think that applies to cheer just as much as any other business!
Agree. In our area there are three good ones to choose from, so I would say the market for another gym is not there. But if that wasn't the case and all three gyms were not reputable, a 4th "good" one could certainly have a chance.
I think there are to many in the bay area. Particualy in South and East Bay. Seriously, why don't people come together and make one GREAT gym. That is how Stingrays got so big. Several gyms came together. A bunch of little gyms end up closing and everyone loses.

We can all blame worlds for this. people will leave gyms just for the promise of a worlds team even if they only have level 2 skills. Also the no crossover rule. Think back 3 years ago tons of large teams full of crossovers. Now everyone combine all their talent in stead of spreading it out. All for 1 competetion way way at the end of the season.

Someone gets it. Thank you. Worlds (in my opinion) is a joke. It has become ONLY about the level 5 kids and doing whatever it takes to get there. The rest of the teams seem to mean nothing anymore. Lets face it, it is not even a true WORLDS comp. 99% of the teams are U.S. It's just a large level 5 Nationals held in Orlando. The only difference is the trophy says World Champion instead of National Champion. And the rings? Haven't we already seen those in cheer for winning a National Championship?
So if you keep combining all the smaller gyms into mega gyms, eventually no teams will have anyone to compete against. How boring is it when you go to a competition and there's only a few teams in your division? Keep it competitive.

OK there will always be new gyms, but if a couple gyms would merge, then the customers would receive better coaching, better choice of athletes to make stronger teams and just a stronger pool of resources. Gym owners can't afford to keep gyms open with the small amount of athletes.
But couldn't u believe the talent if they were combined??? That's the problem. That's why these gyms don't get that far in bigger competitions.... they just can't compete. Not to say they aren't great gyms with styles of their own, but if the goal is to be recognized world wide, they better open up to other ideas. I think all three owners are great people. I just wish they could see the potential

Exactly my point! This example could be used almost anywhere, especially in California. All these random gyms complain when they get beat, then they better get with the program and either get more kids or merge with another gym.

It's a business. It's about so much more than winning trophies. The bottom line, none of the three see a merger as a profitable business venture.

Not posting with any ill intent whatsoever here, but I was thinking about this thread. My neighbor makes pretty good money and so do I. We could buy a house together and have a much nicer house, but my American dream is to have my own house even if combining with others could cause a greater result. I KNOW, not apples to apples, but that is what I thought.

Stepping away from the thread now.
Not a very smart business plan. Like it or not ,combining resources is better if its done correctly. Bottom line is people have EGOS and want to do it their way. Cheer gym owners have been doing it that way for years and you see very few make it to 5 years, let alone 10 years.
LOL keep your small house, I rather make more money in the long run and get a bigger house. :
