Obviously the parents don't know. I am one of those cheer parents who goes to every competition and stays with the kids at away competitions. We usually end up with a couple kids in our room whose parents don't go. There's a number of kids whose parents rarely go to competitions, especially the traveling ones. I can tell you that these are the kids that are usually sneaking out of their rooms late at night. I've had to chase a few down in the past. Thankfully I never caught them drinking, and it hasn't been a problem at our gym that I'm aware of, but I have seen it happening in other programs at competitions - especially Vegas and Worlds.
If they are out with the coaches and drinking, then shame on the coaches. You should not be in a position of authority supervising minors if you are breaking the law and endangering them, and yes, that's what drinking with them is. It's not a little harmless fun. It's a serious matter that could end up costing you your job and closing your gym down. Most are barely surviving financially. A lawsuit from parents or legal fees incurred from a possible arrest are a big, big deal and very expensive.
Athletes and coaches may not be under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, performance enhancing substances, or over-the-counter medications while participating in a practice or performance that would hinder the ability to supervise or execute a routine safely.
Now what they will do with this rule is the question. And note that it does not say anything about what the coaches legally do after the competition.
After a competition aren't the coaches "off duty" per say? Isn't this when kids should return to the supervision of their parents or chaperones? Not being sarcastic, just asking a reasonable question. Are coaches under a contract that states that they are on duty for the duration of the competition, from the time they arrive Friday night in Vegas (for example) til they leave Sunday night or Monday morning??? I will never condone a hangover and believe that everyone, parents, friends, coaches, gym owners, judges, etc. should behave responsibly on all levels. I see nothing wrong with a ****tail when in the presence of other adults. Further, drinking to get drunk is downright distasteful in any forum. Please don't think that my comment means that I support irresponsible drinking on any level.
Somebody please school me on this issue. I'm confused! Thanks!
At Worlds and at Final Destination there was an rv outside each of the arenas serving alcohol to coaches DURING the competition. I was there and saw coaches and owners consuming as much alcohol as they wanted and then going back into the arena to work with the athletes. The people hosting were even offering mints and gum to the coaches so they could hide the beer on their breath when they went back in.
Maybe this is the reason this rule was added. I hope it will not happen again this year. We'll see.
This is old. Been there done that. All of our news has been brought out and argued over in previous months. Let's not stoop so low, k? We love both of these programs. Every gym has its share of issues, including personnel with issues - yes, that includes you gyms who SWEAR that your gym and coaches are perfect.
See I don't understand this at all. Why would a coach want to hang out with any cheerleaders after hours? Personally the cheerleaders are the last person I want to see after a long competition day. Hanging around 18 year olds doesn't sound like a good time to me.
