My daughter cheers for a gym in so cal and we haven't heard about our makeup yet. As a mother, I prefer something tasteful and not too much. I like a little glitter but the bright red lipstick is almost too much to bear. I hope the "prostitute " look is in the past!!!!(LOL)

Our gym is using the make-up but I'm not sure what kind they are going to wear. While I hate having to take the time to put it on, it does look nice to have the team wearing uniform make-up...plus, it really does make a difference when they are on stage under those lights.

Wow, strong language about makeup! I think the reason why they have them wear red is so their lips will show up. You don't so much notice how much makeup they have untill they come off the floor. When your standing two feet from the child. And the eye makeup is for the same reason, so they appear to have features. The judges are looking at their faces from afar.

I like to think of the red lipstick as theatrical, for that dramatic look to emphasize the smiles!

The glitter make-up is fine AS LONG as the girls do not look like the hit a clown on the way in! I think the judges can see their faces better and yes lipstick does help show of their smiles...it does not have to be a deep red! JMO

Actually the fire engine red looks the best on stage. Make up is the best when applied correctly and not by people who know NOTHING about it.

When my daughter was younger I disagreed with the amount of make up that the girls wore so I took it upon myself to lessen her make up so that it added "just enough." She looked so pretty...perfect even, for picture day at school or for a family outting. But after she arrived at the competition and stood next to the other girls I noticed right away that she looked oddly underdressed. She looked unfinished. From that point forward I applied the make up as instructed. Funny...the makeup doesn't even bother me as much any more. I understand that its for stage presence and nothing more.

I think someone mentioned on the boards in the past that it serves the same purpose as the make up used in Kabuki theater. Up close it's way too much, but from a distance, it emphasizes smiles and expression. The little girls seem to like it. The older girls wash their faces as soon as they can.

I think every team should be required to have a professional make up artist that way the crazy cheer moms can't screw it up!!!!(Just kidding! biggrin

We used to have people designated on each team to do everyones makeup that way it all looked the same. So if you wanted your makeup done you would arrive to the meeting point about 15 or 20 minutes early so we could start. No one had a problem with it. I think that some people dont like the look of the makeup because they can't apply it correctly...but with a few older girls helping out the younger ones, it makes for great team bonding and great makeup!

I did the same thing the first time my daughter did an individual since it was not a 'team' effort and I was taking charge as 'appropriate mom'. Couldn't even see her face on stage...just was a pale washed out blob.

Around here (not California) some of the teams have been going
with regular eye shadow, but applying it dramatically (dark/heavy). I would prefer that, but our new box 'o glitter was just delivered. I am one who cannot apply makeup. When my daughter was in 5th grade, I handed her her makeup and said here...learn how to put it on or get someone to do it for you. She learned her to do it and by 6 th grade was a wiz able to help people with theirs.
