Coaches, Big decisions were made at the recent USASF Meeting in Dallas. Please read over the following email sent out by Mike Burgess. The most important and immediate point (in my opinion) is the addition of a Level 4.2 Senior Open. This division combines Level 4 Stunting Skills and Level 2 Tumbling skills into one division. Our hope is that a Level 4.2 is the PERFECT opportunity for you to recruit kids back to your gym that enjoy cheerleading but whose tumbling skills haven't progressed at the same pace as their stunting skills.
Please note, this division goes into effect starting THIS SEASON.
Here is Mike Burgess' email...
Dear USASF/IASF Membership:
Over the past several months committees and the National Advisory Board of the USASF and/or IASF have been meeting to discuss several topics related to all-star cheer and dance. As a result of these meetings, and in particular the most recent gathering of committees in Dallas, Texas in the United States, there are some new guidelines, policies, definitions and a division addition that will impact our membership effective immediately.
The three specific areas are:
SMALL GYM DEFINITION
The small gyms definition has been further clarified and now reads:
A "Small Gym" is defined as having 100 or less participants. A Small Gym is defined as having one physical address for its location and has 100 or less athletes registered in its competitive cheer program at the time of competition. Exhibition teams, crossover athletes, special needs teams and dance teams do not count toward the 100 or less athletes.
4.2 DIVISION ADDED
In an effort to encourage increased participation in the all-star cheerleading activity, the USASF/IASF has recognized the challenge that many participants feel who are skilled in stunting but limited in their personal tumbling ability. Therefore a new division has been added to the 2008-09 Age Grid. This is level 4.2.
Level 4.2 follows Level 4 rules for Stunts/Pyramids/Dismounts and Tosses and Level 2 rules for General Tumbling/Standing Tumbling and Running Tumbling. It is offered only in "Senior Open."
The two items above will be added to the 2008-09 effective immediately.
UNIFORMS RECOMENDATIONS
The following recommendation is being made by the USASF as it pertains to uniforms for all-star participants. This is not a "rule," at this time, but only a recommendation. Therefore, it will be posted on the website and shared with membership, but it will not appear on the Age Grid.
"Coaches should consider ALL squad members' body types when choosing a uniform style. The uniform should comfortably fit the athlete, and the athlete should feel comfortable performing in the uniform. The skirt on female cheerleaders should cover briefs completely in front and back while standing; and should fit loosely enough not to "ride up" around waist during performance. Crop tops should reasonably cover the athlete, and not be so short that bra tops show during "arm over head" movements. This is not a mandatory rule for this season, but simply a recommendation. We must present our participants as athletes, and be aware that many children to not have the body type to make some uniforms fit the above criteria."
I appreciate all of the hard-work and dedication of the various committees of the USASF/IASF and the continued support of our membership.
Thanks,
Justin Carrier Executive Director - Strategic Development NCA/NDA 972.840.4038
i just read this on another message board. I dont really know how i feel about it. I dont like it because generally if a child stunts level 4 and tumbles level three they would more than likely be a level 3. But i feel bad for the kids who just cant get that tumbling down but are amazing at stunting. I dont know.
-- edited to add: I just went to USASF -- and believe it or not its there.. 4.2. Well heck, why not a 3.2 or a even a 5.2!
and yet, they still won't allow Aerials in the dance routines.

I did not believe it either. I checked it out before I posted it. I actually had heard about it from another gym but felt it was never going to happen. After all they shot down competing fulls against double fulls, so I thought this had no chance in Hades of being a reality.
The rest of it...I told ya so....once again...Stay Tuned.
Thinking about the athletes at our gym, I have to say I like it. We have some terrific flyers who just don't have tumbling beyond level 2/3. But in practice, how would that work...would you have two sets of level 4 flyers, one for the level 4 team that has level 4 tumblers, and one for the level 4.2 team?
Just throwing this out too, what about teams that have level 4 tumblers but level 2/3 flyers, a level 3.4 next? We do have plenty of divisions as it is. I see the pro's and con's, should be interesting!!

The problem is you don't have any motivation for those people to get their tumbling now. Scoresheets are going to have to be adjusted for this division. Seriously you are going to see backwalk overs mixed with double downs. You do make exceptions to individuals who are good stunters, but from my experience most people who say they are "advanced" stunters would do just fine on a level 3 team. We are killing our own industry.

It takes less time to teach high level stunting then it does high level tumbling. This in no way kills our industry, it only increases the amount involved. Older kids, mainly HS aged who just want to compete and not deal with the game stuff that they get at their school but started to late to be a high level tumbler can join a team just like that. Most kids in HS or going into it will do their HS team because a BHS might make them good enough to do the team and still stunt at a high level but at All Star, they'll get stuck on a level 2 team.
Just a heads up! We called a couple orginizations and they are not going to be offering this division even though it is USASF guideline change. JAMFEST, AMERICAS BEST SO FAR HAVE SAID NO TO THIS DIVISION

Well I have been coaching for years and if you know how to work your athletes and challenge them in both areas, then it shouldn't be a problem. For those of you who say its easy to teach stunting, well then ya anyone can do a lib full down messing around but making it look good and sticking it in a routine is different. Just like a backhandspring can be taught, but make it look good. I think it goes back to a coaching issue. Whatever , all stars are CRAZY now. You never know whats coming up next.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHO WILL BE OFFERING IT
You will probably have to call the comps directly and ask to talk to one of the heads of the comp company. You will also probably have to call very close to the deadline of the registration for the event you are planning to attend as well.
I have to agree with you Acedad, but I am sure that somebody will. When you start talking dollars some people will change their minds even if they have to hold their nose to do it.
Coattailing all the way! Get the skills to be in the correct division! Baseball does not professional hit off a T when they get 4 balls like little league. GIve me a break....

go back to your gym and work harder!
That is one of the things that bothers me. Most of the gyms that sit on the USASF Board, Advisory Board, and Rules Committee have ZERO ISSUE with teaching tumbling. So I just don't see how it is a real issue. Keeping Senior kids who have not progressed in certain areas is difficult for everybody, but why can't they work harder? or better yet, compete their true level. Every year people get upset at teams who are Level 4's who are competing Level 5's, Level 2's who should be Level 1. Now it seems like the governing body is sanctioning it.
I foresee true level 4 teams in all areas cross competing in this division. And since many gyms have Level 5's competing on level 4 you will have Level 5's competing on level 4.2 You think we got issues with sandbagging now? This year will be interesting.
