when is it "OK" to start your kid in private lessons without looking like a pushy mom? They will need it eventually- will the coach recommend it or is there a level that they will get to that it's pretty much a requirement? Do you talk to the coach or the owner if you feel your child isn't getting placed correctly? These are things that maybe someone should answer for some parents that obviously don't know they are going overboard.

when is it ok to start privates?  i don't think there's a right answer to that.  and its never a REQUIREMENT to do privates.  honestly, my answer would be when the KID wants to, if s/he ever does.  being a pushy mom means pushing your kid to do things that YOU want them to do, not things they want to do for themselves.  you explain to your child that made a year long comitment to their team, and that they need to stick to that, but anything passed that, you're being a pushy mom.  i think parents should encourage their children to speak to their coaches/owners THEMSELVES about how to get whatever spot on whatever team it is they want to be on, and what it would take to reach that goal.  one of the many valuable lessons in sports is how to take what you want, and make it a reality on your own.

when speaking to a coach/owner about placements, the best question is to ask why.  not in an attacking matter, but more of a "sally has expressed to me that one of her goals is to be on team A.  what skills is she lacking or needing improvement on to be placed on that team?"  that way its opened ended, you're not attacking anyone or expressing your child is way to good to be where she's at, and you're leaving room for the coach to answer.  there's always a reason for everything, and if the owner/coach is smart, they will have the GYM's best interest in mind.  the bottom line, if you don't trust the desicions being made, you're probably not at the right gym.

confusedWhen do the coaches feel it is necessary to step in and say something, or is it just something that the other parents should bring it up to this so call "obsessed parent"? In my gym we are actually losing teammates because the parents don't want to be at practice with this other parent anymore because she causes so much drama.smile

I'm sorry, I thought this was a place to talk about anything and everything, not just what YOU think is important. Some gyms do have this situation going on and it does interfere with what we think our kids deserve. We just want to know how to handle it correctly. So since you are anonymous almighty- how would you handle it?

I think what we are all trying to figure out is how to stop the one parent that is in every gym that goes overboard and takes the fun out of it for everyone without having to get nasty right?

i hate obsessed parents, there was this one at my old gym and she pushed her 8 year old daughter so hard. That little girl would take a tumbling class, a private, then her team cheer practice, then another private everyday. It was bad enough that they drove 2 hours each way but then to have a 8 year in the gym practicing for 5 hours stright. She wanted her doughter to be level 5 so bad. Her daughter would just cry and cry, i felt so bad for that little girl.

I would think at that point the coach would have stepped in to say something.
