How do you do it?

I have read on hear about northern California kids cheering for CA in southern California. How do you do it with school and other activities? Not to mention the cost of travel. Are the kids homeschooled? Do you fly or drive? How many practices a week do you have to attend?

Im one of the kids who does this,

We go on the weekends, we drive down most of the time but we have taken the train which is $56 one way. so going on the weekends doesnt affect our school education.

As money goes we split the cost of gas and food. we all carpool together. The combined cost between us all isnt to bad for the limited amount of time we go down south. Cameron,Xavier,Brett,Kayla,Caitlyn, and Myself all go down together and this weekend we are renting a van to head down there for practice. We are all giving Kim Lemos(Kayla's mom) about $40 dollars each for the cost of the car and gas.

if you have any other questions about our trips down or anything please email me at Rdubz7@yahoo.com or just reply to this message

I did the trip last year for the 2nd half of the year for the open int'l team, and its really not that bad if you slpit the trip with other people.  The worst part really is being in the car for so long, but if you have people with you then its not THAT bad.  You get used to it.  I did have to do the trip alone a couple of times though...  That was rough!  I started putting on my own personal concerts in my car!

How many hours is it one way?

from san jose, its anywhere between 6-8, or more depending on traffic through los angeles.  i normally averaged 7 hours start to finish, stopping for gas, the bathroom, and a good leg stretching once or twice.

Did you arrive on Friday and return on Sunday, then return to school on Monday?

Does coed only have practice on the weekends? I thought when it got closer to nationals or worlds they practice 4-5 times a week. How does that work.

Wow! I am amazed as well! The farthest we currently have come away to cheer for us is I think 90 minutes or so. Even though we have our share of traffics jams they are nothing like those in California...not at least from the times I was out there. So for people to commute that far through all of that is in an awesome commitment on both parents/athletes and the gym! kudos for making it work.

Wow. 6 to 8 hours to get to practice is commitment. In Vegas, people don't even like traveling from one side of town to the other which takes 30 to 45 min.

i'm not sure as to how the kids are doing it this year, but i'm sure its similar to what i did last year.

last year i did all the driving for myself, cameron, brett, and x, and we split the cost of gas.  i'd pick the boys up EARLY saturday morning (around 6 or so) at a gas station right off the freeway in morgan hill (which was on my way).  we'd make it to san marcos around 1 or 2 depending on traffic, and they'd go straight to practice from the car (they were normally a little late, but hey, thats excusable right??)  then i'd go to a friends house and wait for my practice in the evening.  i'd get up bright and early for my practice at 6 on sunday, the boys had practice from 12-3 normally but they always ran later then that to try to get as much in with everyone there as possible.  we'd leave straight from the gym and get home around 10 or 11.

that was on a NORMAL weekend.  there were weekends when my team would have a night practice and we wouldnt leave until 9pm on sunday night.  in that case, brett and i switched off driving.  he'd drive first, i'd sleep.  then i'd drive after the grapevine and he'd sleep.  and then there were some weeks the boys stayed down there all week for practice, so i'd drive all by my self.  and then we all stayed there for the week before worlds.

basically, its something we all wanted SO BADLY, that we made it work.  for me, i really wanted to compete at world's.  i'd never gotten the chance.  and i was determined that even though circumstances had forced me to move back to nor cal, i was still going to worlds and i wasn't going to abandon my team.  and i know all 4 of us were kind of in the same boat...

They practice during the week, usually twice a week, but the practice size is a lot smaller. The boys workout at local gyms constantly and im sure the 2 girls do the same. I dont know if its one day a week or the other 5 days haha but atleast one of them get something new and amazing to show off on the weekends.

I did the drive every single weekend when my husband and I were still dating. You really DO get used to it. I think the only bad part of the drive are the cow smells and there isn't much to look at other than tumbleweed!!!

The only bummer about that I would think would be the fact that you pretty much don't get to have any weekend at home. For those going into hs, etc does that mean they miss the dances and other extra fun stuff about being in hs?

I honestly would probably not let my son/daughter do it. I feel like you need to balance your life. It is something that would make much more sense once the person is older (freshman in college perhaps). But I think it's just insane for some of the younger ones.
