RE: Kids Leaving allstars and Pop Warner for High School Cheer

I have several kids who's schools allow them to do both, and I feel I get 100% of them and so does their HS coach and most of them get "honor roll" grades. It can be done and it is not the schools place to make the decision for the kids or the family. If the family wants to dedicate themselves to their SPORT then that is their choice. If they want to be at a cheerleading event (games, practice, competitions etc) every day through the week then so be it. I just hate that schools make this decision for the family and they allow soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball (etc.) players to play both for the school and for an outside club. It is not fair and shouldn't be allowed even if the school district or the state considers it a sport. Why is it that cheerleading gets the crazy rules and the other sports don't??

I agree with you cheertyme owner.... it is both unfair and it seems against the law to state that a child can not participate in competitive cheer outside of their school cheer.  we actually are seeking with a family from vaca high advice from an attorney , because they ddo not allow their cheerleaders to do competive cheer.  So far the attorney says it is not right and will be contacting the school athletic department concerning this matter.  We understand making a suggestion that you dont reccomend doing both but to say it isnt allowed is just not right.  I have several cheerleaders from other highschools who cheer both high school and all stars and vaca high is theonly school who doesnt allow it.   Kids who do both get the both of both worlds and it can only benefit high school teams to add some of the all star flare to their school program.. at the same token it adds some of the high school cheer flare to all stars.

Good luck to you!  I know Will C Wood and Vanden both allow their cheerleaders to cheer for All Star.  Let me know if you need any help.  PM me or e-mail at cheertymeas604@yahoo.com

Consider yourself lucky, sadly this isn't the case on a lot of the Sr. teams in our area
We have Sr. Teams with mostly Jr. high or freshman age girls, we even had to go open cuz our two of our flyers were 8 & 9

How do the skills of the 8 & 9 year old flyers compare to the flyers on the team before you went Sr. Open.

We have a couple high schools in our area that does that too.  Won't let the the girls run on both school and all stars.  We would be totally interested in how that plays out as one of our cheerleaders is doing it despite the schools ruling on it.  It is so unnecessary for a school to dictate to a girl what she can do outside of school.  Unreal!

it is not just cheer several districts do this for.  THey are trying to not give kids certain advantages over others.  THis is where you want it to turn into a sport and you keep stalling it.  ALL SPORTS at the HS level can't compete on other teams while doing there particular season..ie football, volleyball, basketball swimming etc.  I say we push for making it a sport getting the recognition it deserves and not treating cheer as a club.  at some point a majority of the kids will falter trying to stay up with two teams and the first thing they let go are the grades.....it is a fact been doing it for years......they know if they get kicked off hs they always have all star....no grade checks!

i agree with the fact that we should push for it to be recognized as sport, BUT the schools can't have their cake and eat it too.  they can't ask cheerleaders to follow sport guidelines, but then in the same breath not fund them like say, the football team, because cheer is a "club."  that's not fair.  football teams don't BUY their pads, uniforms, and helmets every year because the school funds them.  yet, cheerleaders have to fork out a couple hundred bucks for a uniform.  that's just one example, but you get the idea.  i understand about not giving certain kids advantages over others, and i agree with that too, but until CALIFORNIA recognizes cheer as varsity sport, it IS just a club.  and because it IS just a club, the schools have no right to not allow the girls/guys to compete all stars simultaniously.

now, like i've said before, some schools are run better than others, and some get more funding then others, but its not fair to expect school cheer to follow "sport" guidelines until it is actually RECOGNIZED as a sport.

and ps...  when i coached all stars (and pop warner for that matter), i did do grade checks.  mind you, for the most part i really only coached YOUTH teams so majority of the kids OBVIOUSLY passed, but i found that the parents really appreciated that i was supporting their efforts at home.  and i did sit one girl out of practice until her "grades" were up (it only took a week, i believe she was in 1st grade at the time.)

i've heard that they can't consider highschool cheer a sport because they cheer all year around. if it was considered a sport it would have to be CIF or something like that which means they can only cheer for one season.

Really, what high school football team practices year around? I don't know of any. Also kids may take up some optional things, but its not mandatory practice.
