The new USASF Gym Certification program requires all staff to have criminal background checks.

ACEDAD I think that is a wonderful start,but unfortuately it will not weed out all of the criminal element here's why. There are coaches that befriend not only their victom's but their victom's parent's and if those parent's still want to be their childs friend instead of being the parent then those coaches will never have a background to check.

But the background checks are still a good start.

The other problem is that so many cheerleaders advance to coaches and because they cheered with a certain program for so long, the ownership looks the other way.

criminal background checks should be standard. Those few who think that this should not happen obviously do not have children or watch cnn news. Why not be safe than sorry, so your freeken gym can be winners???????. So sad to think that they will let a few DUI's slip thru the crack just win that extra title. Im really beginning to rethink this cheer thing all together, at least leaving my daughter alone..

It is so important that we get these standards changed and get EVERY person whom works with children a criminal background check. They are with our little girls. My daughter is 12, how about those little 5 and 6 year olds. And Im not just talking about the male cheer coaches either. How about the owners? Where does the money really go????

Come on Cheer industry wake up and get those checks..........

are these coaches really not certified. should we as parents ask to see these so called credentials???

A majority of insurance companies that gyms use now are requiring coaches and staff to be credentialed.

I think coming on here and accusing people of crimes is just wrong. Now if they have been found guilty of a felony I can understand being very weary. But to say that they are guilty without fact is just night right in my book. This is not the place for it. If you have a concern about a coach in your program you should contact the owner or coach.

A few coaches may be violating probation by coaching.

Well then I can understand that. No what about Rick DeSpain, I know he is listed as a sex offender yet he still attends competitions and coaches/owns his gym in VA, how do people feel about that?

Glad he's not in Cali biggrin but thats common in Va.

You are so right. What gets posted on here sometimes is just crazy. Common sence people. What about the moms that go drink at the bar while their kids at practice then pick them up in drive them in their car. Who checks that people? We have all seen that and to me that is just as BAD. Stop trying to start trouble.

Well it seems that it has been open for some time, closing will not change the fact that you can still read it, I don't think there is anything wrong with discussing background checks and what we want for our kids, I just dont want to see anyone wrongly accused of a crime.
