I didn't cheer, but I was a Letter Girl for football and basketball games. We wore uniforms and the each girls tops had a different letter and we spelled out the schools name. We yelled the cheers and did arm movements. We were cool....
Yes as a matter of fact I was a... Toe Touchin, Power Punchin Back Flippin, Stunt Stickin Loud Yellin, High Flyin, Spirit Spreadin, Crowd Pleasin Big Time, Bona Fide CHEERLEADER and proud of it!!!
I was a cheerleader in junior high and as a freshman when I lived in Missouri. We didn't do ANYTHING! like you all do now...we had ONE girl who was a gymnast previously so she did the backhandsprings and stuff - looking back we weren't very impressive.
Then moved out here to California and the cheerleaders were hated and horrible (this coming from a girl who came from a school where only ONE girl tumbled...gives you an idea how bad it was :) ), so I didn't even consider trying out.
Now remember this was...uugghhh...a long time ago and I realize that not all California high school teams are horrible...just this one was (it may not be anymore...dunno).
Yes I cheered. We did competitions (no music), just told some story or had a theme (Star Wars) LOL. I still remember the one line in our cheer "Our Empire Strikes Back"
And our pyramid was 3 high, where the flyer climbed up the back (pretty scary), and we wore saddle shoes that were slippery on the bottom (but they made a lot of noise when we stomped on the gym floor). The most tumbling we had were the splits and diving forward rolls.
Back when I did cheer we did performance cheers (no music) and we would do a sideline dance that was really stupid. My favorite cheer was the one when everybody would introduce themselves by name and you got to do a little jig when it was your turn. like the spilts, high kick,or a jump.

I was on pom pons when I was in high school and returned to coach my high school team a few years later. We competed and won a couple of state championhips. I also, was a cheerleader in college. It was a small college. I even directed a program a few years ago. My oldest daughter was an allstar cheerleader for 7 years who took a break last year. She is going to return to cheer on an open team this next season.
What is funny is that I never even suggested cheerleading to my daughter. She came home one day when she was in sixth grade saying her friends wanted to be on a small all star team that had just started in our town. That was seven years ago.
I have a younger daughter who right now has no interest in cheerleading and loves softball and basketball. You never know, she might get the bug to do it. I am surprised she hasn't with her older sister doing it.
I am curious how many younger sisters or brothers have been inspired to cheer because of their older sibling.
