RE: People who dont pay their CHEER BILLS

This last season my husband was laid off for a couple of months.  During that time we tightened are belts.  I work and make a good salary so it was not too bad.  When it came to cheer, we had already paid for all the uniform and comp fees, it was just the monthly nutrition that we needed to pay.  Up until this time we always paid on time.  I approached out gyms owner and explained our situation to her.  She allowed us to pay a little late and for a month or so split our payments.  Once everything got back to normal we went back to paying on time again.  Im telling you this because I went to the owner in confidence.  I did not want anyone else knowing our personal business.  I trusted the gym owner to keep this between us and not for others in the gym to know.  It was not anyone elses business.  If I had found out she had for what ever reason broken that confidence I would have been devastated.  No one knows everyones circumstances.  Parents gossip and sometimes it gets done right mean.  Yes there are those who will try to get one over on you and yes there are those that are just plain deadbeats.  But it is the owners responsibility to handle these types of customers and situations.  Nosey parents dont have a right to know.

First off it's not other parents business if someone has paid or not paid thier bill.  I also find it hard to believe a gym owner would come on a public message board soliciting help on collecting fees that some parents have failed to pay.  As a professional I would think they would already be aware of what avenues to take to collect monies that are due the gym.  JMO.

Granted it is not gym parents business to know the names of those not paying their bills, BUT it is their business to know that this is a problem because, as other posters have stated, we end up picking up their costs......competition fees miraculously increase when you have families who don't pay, tuition goes up, etc. so the parent s who do pay their bills end up picking up the slack for those who don't.......there is a problem and it is completely reasonable to look for solutions.

Wouldn't it be the gym owners responsibility to address this issue.  In the contact it should state that payments need to be made on time.  Send out reminders to all the parents about paying on time.  Adhere to a policy that if you don't pay your child does not cheer.  Take action against these parents if necessary.   Be consistant with your policies.  There has to be a better solution then making it common knowledge that little sally's mom and dad are late on thier payments.  I agree that it is no ones elses business.  It should be a matter between the owners and the parent involved.   If the gyms has good business practices in place it should not effect you.

I do agree with you.  Everyone gets down and out, but it isn't for anyone but the owner and the customer to know.  We have people that post date checks and have us wait to put them through the business.  We even have customers who occasionally bounce checks ( come on now who hasn't had this happen?)  It still is not for discussion in our gym.  All of our customers make it good anyway.  We have had some go to other gyms oweing us, totally different.  We send letters and if they don't try to work out something with us then we take them to court.  And we win!

Totally agree. I've (gulp) bounced a check on occassion and am so happy my check wasn't posted on a wall somewhere to humiliate me. It's between the gym and the parent. And like the other poster said, if it's a repeated situation and the parent tries to skip out on paying, well, that's what small claims court is for. If they signed the contract, they're liable for the payment.

It's important to remember everything that you and many posters suggest takes time and lots of extra energy the gym owner may or may not have.  Having to chase down RESPONSIBLE adults shouldn't be something the gym owners have to do.  If the parent is RESPONSIBLE enough to jump into the car, drive their cheerleader to cheer practice, they are darn well RESPONSIBLE to know that they are skipping out on their obligation - payment - to the gym.  In addition, technology is amazing these days and the parents are instantly notified when they have bounced a check.  Honestly, the parents need to step up their games and get on the ball here.  If it takes something like posting a check on a billboard then go for it.  It would only take one posted check and no other parent would want to publized.  I do believe you do need to give the parent a chance to make good on the check but after 2 weeks or even 1 month, time to post that check.

Well our parents handle their bounced checks, no problem.  And wow, have you ever bounced a check?  Ok.  But more than all of that, let's not embarrass the athletes.  These kids don't need it.  They bust it out for the gym.  And I would not allow anyone to embarrass my kids.  These kids become part of my family.  We try to deal with all the financial situations with the parents and with them alone.  I do not believe in embarrassing a child like that.  There is other ways of dealing with the problems.  These kids go to school with other kids in the gym.  They don't need to be put down because of a financial problem.  Sorry, no way.  I will get the money for our gym in a more professional way, making sure the kids are not hurt by this.  -gym owner-

The only way that this will stop if Cheergym owners banded together. If they all decided that they would not accept athletes from other gyms if they owe at the last gym they attended. In the long run it would benefit all gyms.

Like Hollywood Video, you just can't go to another one, because you forgot to bring a video back to another .. they are all connected, one big brain!
Sorry i was just at the video store and it happened in front of me LOL
