Abuse by coaches

Since abuse has come up on these posts a few times, i thought I would post this artice I found. The article is "Addressing the Issue of Verbal, Physical, and Psychological Abuse of Athletes. The artice can be found in the Womens Sport Foundation, which was founded by Billie Jean King the tennis pro. Here a a few points from this artice.

Types and Defintions of Abuse:

1. Verbal Abuse- the most common occuring type of abuse in sports.
    a) name calling,
    b) hurtful comments regarding performance
    c) swearing at athletes or officials
    d) comments meant to demean a person's integrity.

2. Psychological or Emotional Abuse:
    a) having unrealistic goals or expectations for athletes,
    b) issuing threats,
    c) continually making demeaning statements.

3. Physical Abuse-I have seen this happen
    a) the use of excessive exercise,
    b) denial of fluids as a form of punishment or for a way to create team
        discipline.

If you have heard of this happening to any athlete or from a gym you are interested in joining you may want to seriously conisder your options. The choices we make now for our athletes, or the ones we allow them to make for themselves do have long lasting effects.

it seems like every athlete has been verbally abused. if you suck at a competition more times than not a coach will tell you. This is rediculous though.

There is a positive way of telling kids they didnt perform well and there is a negative way of telling them.

What is so ridiculous about warning parents about danger signs of possible abuse???  It is one thing for a coach to share some correctful criticism with an athlete after a rough performance, but to demean, ridicule or swear at an athlete, and especially in front of fellow team members, most certainly is abuse.  I do not know one cheerleader that doesn't beat themselves up after a rough go and being reminded of it in a brutal way only leaves them feeling even worse about the situation, as well as worse about themselves personally.

Just the fact it is Billy Jean King who had a live abortion on television is a good reason not to listen to anything that comes out of this sorry excuse for a woman's mouth.  For her to mention ABUSE is a JOKE.

This is from the website "www.verbalabuse.com

Abuse is a perverted ways of "winning over" others. Its the opposite of being a good sport--the opposite of good sportsmanship.

The most common form of unfair behavior is verbal abuse. When verbal abuse, temper tantrums, and outbursts of rage are tolerated in a coach or team member the message is, "Its okay to launch personal attacks on others." Some how inflicting pain is considered among other things justifiable or a sign of strength.

No one is more influenced by verbal abuse than a child. The negative impact of verbal abuse on children can not be measured. Certainly some children succeed who were verbally abused in childhood but are they better people?

Teaching coaches to stop abuse both among team members by coaches is essential if we are to live in a healthier world.

POSITIVE COACHING ALLIANCE helps players develop good sportsmanship "habits" through drills, discussion and modeling sportsmanlike behavior. The organization offers training and publishes a newsletter. They state the following: As a local Partner, your organization will continually receive tools and strategies that can dramatically reduce negative incidents and encourage a positive environment for all involved in the youth sports setting. Check out their web site at
www.positivecoach.org or e-mail them from the site for more information.

I have heard so many parents ABUSE their children with the way they talk to them.  And some of the parents can't even tear themselves away from this site to go take care of their children.  There is so much abuse out there by parents.  Or parents who sit in the lobby and say mean things about other children on the teams.  Talk about ABUSE!  Hang up your cell phones, turn off your television sets, stay sober, forget about everything else and spend some time with those kids.  Come on now,  QUIT ABUSING YOUR KIDS!  GET HELP!

That's interesting but the parents have done so many of those things.  Wow!  Think about all the sports including cheerleading where you have seen all of the above done to athletes by their parents.  Seriously!

how about this... kids that abuse their parents! I can NOT believe the way some kids talk to their parents its mind blowing! These same parents are the ones griping and moaning about how their kid is being done wrong by the coaches, the owners, the other kids on the team, their teacher etc etc MAYBE if these parents didn't allow their children to RULE them 24/7 their kid wouldn't have a "problem" with everyone they come in contact with!  Listening some kids order their parents around or order them to buy them this or buy them that it's just horriblefurious

What about the coach who blames one cheerleader for the placement of the team? Then the rest of the team believes it and blames the same cheerleader....

This happened to a team I know last year at worlds. She ate a tumbling skill and the coach blamed her for their score...she was one of the best cheerleaders on the team....others got mad at her too....luckily, she and her mom were smart enough to find another team- where she found a great deal of success!!!!

Me and another coach were walking around World's at Walt Disney World and witnessed about 4 different cheerleaders from different programs, yelling and screaming at their parents in uniform and acting like complete brats - at the (happiest place on earth) biggrin

Is that what she told you?  Or did she feel responsible and say that they blamed her?  Just the facts, please.
