RE: Curious

With all the concerns with AllStar teams being affiliated with youth programs for competitive purposes I highly doubt they will be part of the same program.  In all fairness to the other programs if they become allstar they should NOT be part of the norcal youth football and cheer.  This takes away from its purpose.  It also takes from the high schools and these programs are supposed to be connected to a high school or feed into a high school.  I think they are not advertising too much due to the fact that if the Youth alliance got word there would be problems with the herd having an allstar team so they are keeping it all really hush hush

We had our new season meeting today and it was ok, some new families, most of my old families.  In our area it seems to be the returning members that are feeling the economy crunch most.  I assume its because the new members knew it would be a big cost.  Is anyone else seeing this happening??

Well the One Athletics website it said they had about 105 kids. That was a few days ago so who knows now. That's great to start out with and I'm sure that number will grow.

There is a new program trying to start in Elk Grove. I think it's called Edge Allstars... don't know how that will go.

One Athletics used to be Roseville Cheer Starz.  Roseville Cheer Starz had an existing clientele.  I don't have a clue what the size of the clientele was but my guess is that they had around 50-75 kids in their gym.  This gym isn't starting from scratch and trying to build from the ground up.  I checked out the website and did see the announcement of 105 cheerleaders however when you actually count the names under the team distributions there is just about 80 cheerleaders.  So, really did the gym grow in size?  Not really?  Did they draw cheerleaders from another gym?  Probably?  That is normal.  There are always cheerleaders that will move to a different gym because they like a certain coach.  In addition, it's those cheerleaders that a gym is usually (not always) glad to see go.  It kid was obnoxious or their parent was so difficult and demanding that it's a great relief to see go.  Wishing One-Athletics well this season.  It's going to be a challenge to live up to all the hype.

I also heard about the Edge Allstars.  Saw an newspaper ad in a town newspaper.  This is an allstar program hiding behind the Elk Grove Jr. Herd football/cheer program.  The cheer coordinator for the Jr. Herd is also going to be the coach for the All-Star team.  This team is hiding behind a Jr. program to avoid some huge overhead costs and they really need  to be careful with this effort.  Gyms are expensive and must be done correctly from liability insurance, disability insurance, paying employment taxes, and many more small business expenses that go along with owning a real business.  This cheer coordinator is trying to avoid all this and build a team under a jr. program.  This team is going to be for girls 15-18 years old.  This is a bit puzzling and something that doesn't seem on the up and up.  The by-laws for this jr. program www.norcalsa.com states that they league has been formed for cheerleaders and football players from 5-14 years old.  In addition, the by-laws also states that the volunteer coaches can't be affliated with an all-star program.  This cheer coordinator will be wearing two hats this season as the allstar coach and the Elk Grove jr. cheer coordinator.  The Elk Grove Jr. Herd board members (understand the a several year president just left this season and there are several new board member including a new president) may be a bit naive as to what is going on and this coordinator may get the entire board in a whole lot of trouble.  They need to be careful with this effort.  There may be no all-star team in the end and even no football league for the Elk Grove Jr Herd to play in once the league finds out what is going on.  Sticky situation here and something that can clause the jr herd more trouble than it's worth.  She needs to pick one team or another.  The jr. herd or the new Edge allstars?  but don't think you can do both.

Interesting so are you saying EDGE Allstars must be freestanding in order to actually form as a program.  I did not realize this.  we were considering checking them out but there is not enough information available about their program anywhere.  Have they even started or are they are still working on it.  If they have not started by now it makes me think they will not actually open.  I would hate to sign up only to find out they dont have everything in order.  Does anyone know where we can find out if they are actually going to start or not.
I also went on the website referenced and it looks like EDGE cannot be part of the Junior Herd Program due to the bylaws of the organization so they must be moving on as a freestanding program.  Also the Junior Herd Website does not mention it and I am sure their website would be updated with this inforamtion if they were affiliated.  Does anyone have any information on EDGE or is it just a name and a dream with no actual program.

It is my understanding that this was going to start just as soon as the cheer coordinator hosted tryouts for the Jr. Herd program - those girls that are 5-14 years old.  That just happened this past weekend.  The coordinator wanted to form this all star program to not let go of her aging out girls.  The girls that were on her midget team last season.  amd then add older girls so the team is going to be 15-18 years old.

There has been lots of work behind the scenes to make this happen.  The contracts have been written.  Negotiations with a local dance center for floor space to practice on has been done.  yes dance floor space not a spring floor but the single team has to start some place.  I am not sure how this will work with the new gym certifications that were suggested by USASF this season.  The coaches have been named.  the EG coordinator and an ex-high school coach and youth coach.  they have even discussed practice times on Sundays for 4 hours per day because of the limited time at the dance studio.

Here is the first paragraph of this EDGE documentation.

"Welcome to EDGE All-Star Cheerleading!  We are so happy that you are considering joining our new program.  EDGE is a new program affiliated with the Elk Grove Jr. Thundering Herd.  This new team is an extension of our Youth Program that will allow cheerleaders that are no longer age eligible for our local youth programs an opportunity to do competitive cheer while in high school."

The youth programs are definitely a draw in the Elk Grove Area.  And the volunteer coaches and cheer coordinators need to be commended.  They invests their own time and own money to keep these youth kids busy and give them an avenue to cheer.  But they do seek professional help from many of the All-Star Nor Call gyms to make they look even better.  will they still give the same level of service from the All-star gyms now that she is entereing the All-Star circle?   The All-Star politics are going to be interesting here that is for sure.   Many youth coaches can do it alone don't understand the certification hours it takes to be successful.   I certainly hope that this jr. coordinator understands there is so much more to the All-Star scene than meeting the girls on a Sunday.  Because when you start collecting money for things such as rent, coaches salaries, and more the demands of the parents have just elevated and you open a whole nother can of worms.   YIKS!

Cheer Odyssey is an amazing program. We migrated there from Elk Grove this year as well. We have followed them for quite a while and  visited their gym a couple of times. We finished out our season last year 06-07 and then moved on. The general feel of the gym is amazing and it is a great environment - my daughter loves it.

Did you check out EDGE.  I researched it and found they are a separate allstar team. Norcalsa.org states they cannot be affilliated with any youth program.  You should check them out before you drive so far also Power is close as well. I too am very interested in finding out if EDGE is really going to produce a team. I cannot imagine an allstar team practicing at a dance center.  If they do it will be not only inconvenient it will be unsafe for all the cheerleaders that are practicing stunts and tumling.  It is a good idea but I highly doubt they will produce a team this year. Maybe next year once they establish and comply with the norcalsa regulations.  If they do start be cautious they dont get shut down there are many laws regulating these programs now.  Especially in Elk Grove they must have many permits.  I hear they want to move their midgets up but that is what the high school is for.  Why are they taking away from our highschool programs.

...now that makes 3 gyms within a 20 mile radius I cant imagine how all 3 will succeed in the area.  How are the other neighboring gyms doing as a result?

Aren't there All Star Cheer bi-laws in place that stipulate that a gym can't open within a certain proximity to other gyms?  If so, is it 20 miles or it it a greater distance? 20 miles is WAY to close. I would imagine the gyms would deal with quite a bit of gym hopping and/or ostracize people who do creating unhealthy rivalries. Is that the case or is it more civil?

Are you friggin' kidding me???? Bi-laws that stipulate how many all-star programs can exist within a certain proximity?? Have we been transported to a communist Soviet Union? Last time I checked the United Staes (and the all-satr programs within it) was built on the idea of a free market capitalist economy....that means competition drives business!!!!!! If it is not feasible for two programs to exist in close proximity one will shut down because they're not making money....otherwise the competition is good for the consumer because it gives them a choice!!!!! That is why when certain gyms try to take over the cheer market other programs inevitably pop up.....people don't like being forced into something.....choice and competition is what allows this sport to continue to progress!

I doubt this is true, as another poster stated there are just too many gyms very close to each other.  Either that or it's one of those outdated rules that everyone just turns their heads at.

I was asking a question. When did you start with them. You said you cheered for wildcats last year which has me assuming that you started this year and they just REstarted this year!!.  If they just started practice for this season and you just started this season I was thinking how you knew so much and you have  not even attended a competition with them yet.  DUH

Anyone can start a business anywhere anytime.  For instance look at the Walgreens and CVS drugstores cropping up across the street from each other.
Same thing with cheer gyms.  I know of an area in California, where a gym moved across the street from another gym.  Made everything crazy for both gyms.  By-laws of the gym corporation have nothing to do with that.

I'm so confused.  Do anonymous people somehow know who other anonymous people are?  Don't take this the wrong way, I'm truly curious due to this not being the first time anonymous posts like they know one anonymous is the same as another anonymous.  I'll just ask directly...

Anonymous poster asking the question, what makes you believe that the anonymous poster that responded Odyssey being around for seven years as the same anonymous poster than stated they cheered on Wildcats and now is at Odyssey?  Please don't DUH me, I may start posting as anonymous if I can "see" more than I can logged-in.

Just people who THINK they know

Any moderator can tell if 1 anonymous poster is the same anonymous poster by looking at the IP address.    I have seen many anonymous posters where the same person will either tear a gym up or toot their own horns while making it look like there are others that agree.
I have also seen numerous posters accuse anonymous posters of being from a certain gym but after locating the IP address I was able to see where the person(s) were posting from and I could tell that that person was not from that gym at all.

yes this happens and I know that my family uses the same computer.  so I may post one thing and my daughter may post another or even my husband who visits only so often.  I know I have been guilty myself of posting and then rethinking what the heck i posted and had a change of heart after I read the responses.
I know that may not be the case for most, but most of us are not that trival to do silly things like that.

I think it is good that you have posted that moderators can tell by IP address its the same computer, maybe it will eliminate some of the garbage that goes on.  especially when it is really hurtfull.  Boy do you all have a heard job to do lol

This happens to us too, because there are a few who post from our household, and most of the time we don't know who has posted what.  I know that they don't all share my views, so I could easily see a post showing up with a particular ip address, followed by another post disagreeing with it, but having the same address.  They don't always tell me they are posting because they know I'll tell them they should be busy doing other things (like homework)!
