RE: parents drinking at comps

parents drinking at comps is really tacky. even if it is funny.

i dont believe coaches should ever drink in front of the kids. even if its after the competition, at a team dinner or something. i always preach to my girls that drugs n alcohol isn't even worth the trouble. so how would i look if i had a beer at team dinner? and the kids look up to the coaches so much. any little thing they do can be something that girl remembers for the rest of her cheer career. so i think coaches can wait till the girls are in their rooms or not around. and if they really cant, maybe they should coach for the betty ford allstars.

hummm, this is an interesting topic.  Only because I have been to competitions were alcohol is available for sale.  There is an kiosk restrauant just outside the convention center doors.  This kiosk sells bottled beers of many types.  Or there are major hotel chains just next door that of course sell domestic and mixed drinks.  Or events, such as the jamz nationals, that host their nationals in a casino where were all now any type of alcohol is available.  It's readily available so the parents are going t purchase the product.

It's no different than someone attending a professional baseball game, watching the event, running to the snack bars and ordering a beer and a hotlink.

parents drinking.  It's not going to change, parents will continue to do so whether if the product is available or not.  Maybe, if you see this occurring at an event make sure you are sitted in another section.  Those convention centers are large enough that you can find a different seat and not be bothered by this.

I dont drink at comps anymore... glad to say. After I almost crashed with my daughter and afew of her cheer friends in the car.Just imagine the grief knowing I was plastered with them all in the carashamed

Being at a cheer competition cannot be compared to being at a professional baseball, football or basketball game.  It's an event for KIDS and the last time I checked they didn't sell beer when watching your child play little league or sitting in the stands of a Pop Warner football game.

Hey i'm one of those drunk parents and I take offense to this thread! biggrin

I drink when there is a bar there, I don't go overboard. I drink with several moms, none of us get stupid.. we don't get vulgar, we don't start yelling at the top of our lungs as if we were at a concert, etc.

The question is..what do you consider to be stupid?

Just having a glass in my hand?
Me having fun and not the next person?

i honestly think all the parents should be given a shooter on arrival! Maybe lighten some people up!

Interesting topic and I was just at World's at the Animal Kingdom after party, in line waiting to order food, when I noticed they had beer listed under beverages.  I contemplated for a moment that a beer would settle my nerves being around that madness of a scene but then I remembered I was a chaperone and decided it would be in bad taste.  (come to find out it wasn't even being offered for sale that night anyway - good thing with all those kids there and short on adult chaperones).

With that being said, if I am going there and in charge of my daughter only, then yes I would have a drink or 2 but not enough to make a fool of myself.  Those where my college days and I would hope that most of us parents are past that stage.

If I am going in a chaperone capacity, as in worlds, nothing to drink during the hours they are up and about, but once curfew hit and the kids were in bed, I had a night cap to unwind.  Moderation is the key.

Now for the subject should the coaches be drinking.  Hmmm tuff because they have the political bs shmoozing to do.  If the team travels and stays as a team, then by no means should that coach be drinking. They are responsable for a team of 5 - 36 girls.  Should there be an issue they need to show up sober and be able to handle the situation.

If the team does not then again I think haveing 1 or 2 social drinks is okay.  Moderation.....

At anyone time should a parent or coach be drunk.  We are adults and there are time and places for that.  I think we should all be able to keep it in check for a few weekends out of the year.

Funny you should mention the Animal Kingdom party.  Although I wasn't there personally to witness it, I heard rumors that some of the cheerleaders were drinking.  Must have somehow brought it into the park themselves.  Anyone else hear or see any of this?  Does Worlds DQ for this type of behavior?

I also heard the same thing about cheerleaders getting drunk and being very provocative on the dance floor.   What a way to represent your gym.  I bet they are proud.

I don't see why having a drink would embarrass the athletes!  Maybe if you drink way too much and are making a fool of yourself then yeah that would be embarrassing.  But most adults know how to handle themselves when they drink.  But the ones that know they can't handle themselves while drinking should be responsible not to even start drinking at a cheer competition.

Because there's a difference between having a social drink and being drunk.  Unfortunately those who get drunk don't see the difference.

If parents are getting drunk and acting stupid then maybe the gym owner should say that's not acceptable!!  Especially if it's the same ones over and over again!

I agree with one of the other posters on here. The parents that get drunk "not the social drinker" do not realize that they are in fact drunk and making themselves as well as the gyms they are representing look bad. I really am not a drinker but I have on rare occasions had a drink.

But more importantly to me is where is their common sense ? God forbid one of their children has an appendicitus attack or an asthma attack at these away comps what are they going to do ? They are too drunk to properly assess the situation let alone drive their child to the E.R. and how about signing those pre surgical authorizations.
Do you think a surgen will operate on a minor when there is only an intoxicated parent there to sign the release ? My guess is if it's not life threatening your child will have to wait for hours for their parent to sobor up before a surgen would touch them.

How many cheerleaders were taken to the E.R. this weekend at worlds ? It could have been your's (drunk parents)

Ok so you might think I am being too dramatic but these are the things that I think about.

The choice to drink and drive is completely different from the choice to have a drink at a comp.....clearly drinking and driving is NEVER okay....but if you are at a comp. and will not be driving I don't see the harm as long as you can control yourself

Couldn't these scenarios happen at anytime...not just at comps? So based on your theory parents should never drink because their kid might have an appendicitus in the middle of the night....crap, there goes my future night caps!

Seriously!  Being a parent is 24/7.  Unless someone is in charge, getting drunk should NEVER be seen as a prioroty.  If it is well......PROBLEM!
