I dont think coaches should be paid hourly because at competitions there is a whole lot of waiting time. But if a coach receives $50 for competition days it (theoretically) should cover gas, 1 meal, parking, and a bit of their time.
50.00 for the WHOLE day seems really low to me. You said that there is a lot of "waiting time" From experience our coaches never had a minute to relax, maybe 5 minutes to sit down. Not to mention gas prices are really high, plus the food choices at the venues are a) a bad food choice b) can be costly. And because the coaches are working all day you know they don't have time to run out and go pick something healthy up. And 1 meal??? That must be nice while you and your family are stuffing your face, the poor coach who is probably already a starving college student is hungry! They are running back and forth all day taking care of your cheerleaders! I just feel that the coaches should be compensated higher than that!
50.00 per competition is plenty. And I am going to tell you why. Most (not all) but most coaches are responsible for one team. The coach's job is to meet the cheerleaders anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour before warmups. Then it is their job to warm the team up, get them to the floor, and greet the team after the preformance. That is it! So, it's just about 2 hours of work ($25.00 per hour in this one example). In addition, the coaches are not coming out of pocket for a coaches badge (at some events the hosting competition will only support one or two badges and the gym owners are paying for the rest). The coaches badges can be extremely expensive ($40 - $100). They receive perks just like the gym owners. Competition companies will give them back packs, jackets, etc. Parents also make sure their coaches are taken care of by purchasing starbucks, chasing the coaches lunches and/or dinner. I'll take the $50.00 for a competition day, it's easy money.
Can someone please define "coaches fee?" I'm talking about the fees that we pay as part of the financial agreement? When do the coaches get the money? I always thought that the fees that each family paid covered the coaches expenses at competitions. At our gym, additional "coaches fees" are also collected for out of state comps. Why would coaches receive as little as $50 per comp if owners receive money for their expenses out of each child's contract??? I don't get it. One of the reasons I've never questioned those fees is because I am one of those people who recognizes how overworked and underpaid some coaches can be, especially ours who are from a small gym.
Coaches fees cover to get them in the competition if the hosting orginization only allows a certain number in free. not all orginizations allow for free entry... second it covers gas and parking as well as meals. Yes the coaches may only get a certain pay, but the gym covers all the other expenses. at least that is how it worked at my gym. if we had to stay overnight it covers hotel and meals etc....
believe me the money collected def. goes back to the coaches. Some gyms average out the fee over the season so that they can cover the entire nationls trip for the staff.
Yes, that helps a lot. Thanks for the info. So is it safe to say that coaches' incomes are "usually" equivalent to part time pay and if it is then when would they have time to supplement with another part time job...or is this where private lessons come in to play?
