WOW, thats really bad. Our gym makes the kids actually EARN their spots in every part of the routine. AND if they are not "pulling their own weight" they are switched with someone who can. Interesting... to say the least.
We have parents who have paid their seasons up front as well, but it cuts no slack any where... thats why its competitive cheerleading.... you have to actually work hard to earn your positions on the team...
I think its time you look for another gym...ashamed.gif

This is sooo unfair!! I know of two families at a certain gym that haven't paid their cheer bills yet, and they are at every practice, at every competition, and told, "don't worry about paying".... but other parents are asked to pay for these kid's cross-over fees... confused.gif WHAT HAPPENED TO, "if you don't pay your bill, you sit out during practice.... until your bill is paid"

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY GYM OWNERS... think... FAIR AND SQUARE!

Does your gym post a list of people that have not paid?  Or is this just gym gossip?  We have a local country club around here that lists on the front door the names of families that have not stayed current.  How is that for customer service, that seems rude, but tends to work, no one wants their name on that list.

having a few friends at this particular gym, I know they have been ostracized in front of other team members and parents as well. Not too fair I don't think.

Atleast have the common courtesy to sit your kids down and talk to them one on one before putting their business on blast. Am i right, or do others disagree? I noticed after the coach did this to one of the team members, she refused to go back to practice... ashamed.gif

That is never a good situation.  I think sometimes office managers contact the parent and they get no response.  Telling the child they cannot come to practice is the last thing a coach wants to do.  That is really hard.

i know a gym that did this too! maybe its the same one im thinking of.....but i refuse to go back into that gym. the coach has absolutely NO respect. i hated that about this particular gym. my friend refused to go back becaue he told everyone while we were at practice that her account was way over and other people "your checks bounced" and stuff like that. i was soooooo irritated

This year at my gym the office staff is doing something different for payment.  They are asking for a debit or credit card that they will pull the money from every month.  Is this a normal practice?  I know that workout gyms do this but for cheer?  I personally think it is a great way for the gym to recieve the money asked of the parents without havin to wait for the checks each month.  Does any other cheer gym do this?

I think this is a great idea too.   A good backup plan if a parent is late on a payment (if they choose to write a check instead of charging it).  If not received after x amount of days the credit card is charged.  Of course if the card is rejected or declined you have the same problem.

What's up with 'some' gyms allowing parents to dish out a ton of money in exchange for their kid being front and center, or having last tumbling pass? I remember when those things used to be given according to ability and skill level! I know a gym that gave one girl point flyer, and front and center the ENTIRE routine! (There is NO tumbling ability, however.) Mommy walks in new this season, writes a fat check..and BOOM!! Amazing spots awarded! It would be one thing if this girl was amazing in all these areas, but she has very average skills! Also, she has fallen on EVERY tumbling pass this season! im not hating i just think there is a fine line between right and wrong. WHAT DO YOU THINK CHEER WORLD? Is this happening at other gyms?

As a gym owner, that is just so stupid.  I want my teams to win.  We can't be bought.  We try to keep all prices so all kids can afford the program.  If some have a hard time, then we tell them we will hire you to do things around our gym for a short period of time to keep their bill paid.  Kids earn their spots at our gym.  And that is only fair.

I have never heard of this before....maybe I should start so I can make the gym more money......Kidding!!!

I have done choreography at a local HS and they wanted me to keep their Seniors in the front for competition.  I almost referred them to another choreographer because I was so against it.  Whats the verdict on this practice?

I have moved kids mid season, it can be very hard on them.  I preach the importance of "whats best for the team"  I moved a cheerleader who got her BHS out from under a stunt to a tumbling position during a stunt sequence and the poor thing cried.  I felt horrible.  But even through the tears she said she understood it was what was best for the team.  I always say their positions in my routines are not permanent.

In one of the previous posts, the poster said other sports don't have the "buy your spot" policy.  I know 100% this is untrue.  At my HS we had this football player come from a private school after the team and starters had been announced.  First game happened and the new kid was starting over the kid who had started in the same position for the prior 2 seasons.  The new kid fully admited his dad donated ALOT of money to the football program and thats why he was starting.  It does happen, so it happening in cheer really shouldn't be that shocking.  I just couldn't justify putting the "non-jumper" with the mom who has a large check book in front of the "toes in by their ears jumper" during a triple toe.  But thats just me.....

This is a good one, I can completely see both sides of this one.  I can't wait to see what others say.

I don't have an issue with putting seniors in the front for most of the routine in the original choreography.  I do have a problem with changing the choreography right before the last comp to put the seniors in front "because it is their last comp" and announcing that.  If it is put out there as "hey we want to change the dance and jump sections to be a litlle more competetive" and then put the seniors in front then fine, no hard feelings. When it is done in the former manner it makes some of the kids resentful and untrusting of statements like "you earn your spot" or "fight to keep it".
I mean I totally support the mindset of "what's best for the team" - not so much spotlighting for sentimental reasons.

trust me, the parents are just ballsy! And how sad for their kids-this shows they KNOW their kid couldn't earn the spot on their own. No, this is not advertised, but a lot of people know about it, and are irate. It's like this-walk in the office, write a check for $10 grand (NO JOKE!), and say you want your kids front and center! SICKENING!

That is just crazy. I wouldn't be at a gym that did that. Its not fair to the kids that have the true skill.

$10,000 buys a spot front and center. Then $20,000 buys a heck of alot 3 kids worth!!! Does that total sound about right . You know I am speaking about you.

Ya, this same mom did it at the NEXT gym she went to, also! Guess it proves cheer definitely IS a business. Not fair to the kids-it doesn;t matter how hard they work, these kids will ALWAYS be in the spotlight, cuz mommy's money said so!!
