We pay too much money for competitive cheer for a kid to be on a team just for fun. It is an investment and as a parent I expect skills, personal growth and the ability to utlize my investment for the future. I wouldn't want her on a losing team but if she was on a wining one and learning nothing year after year, that would not work for me either. So as parent we have to strike the balance. I team that may not win always but my kid is constantly learning skills is probably my choice.

Just out of curiosity....how do you plan on "utilizing your investment"?

The "investment" might lead to a full ride cheer scholarship...they are out there...

You obviously have not done your homework. Full rides are few and far between. Unless you have the best skills and great grades you won't get one. So many parents in all sports say their going fo the scholarships. Let it go and have fun your child most likely is not going to get one.

Hmmm how I'm I going to utilize my investment?  Lets see X amount of dollars per year for cheer, travel costs, uniforms, etc.   I guess my daughter can support her poor broke mom in her later years :)

Well, as long as your child looks back at her childhood and says it was well worth it and I had the time of my life.  Now that's an investment!  Oh yeah, and thank you mom for always looking out for my best interest.

No need for doing homework for me I have proof...My oldest did get a scholarship and is having the time of his life! He graduates next year and has won both NCA/College/Allstar & Worlds Allstar a few times.....I have 2 other kids well actually 3...(sons friend) that will be following in his footsteps...why? because THEY want to and it's FUN for them...

I agree you need to have good grades & the best  skills, but my kids weren't the best when they started....I guess it's a choice of how far you want to go with cheer......BUT like I said the scholarships are available.....I am one of the lucky ones then...whooo hooo for me...

I notice your you have a son. Now that's a different story there are 500 girl cheerleaders for every boy so a boy has a much better chance. I have a girl so I don't think a scholarship is in her future for cheer.

No....I have sons and friends of sons (9 all together) that all grew up together flippin on my couches, the grass in front yard, on the trampoline, in the pool etc......with no professional training or privates.. They are self taught tumblers....better technique came with the current teams they are on.

I would agree a boy might have a better chance.....BUT ......It's the choice of your kid and how far she wants to take cheer.... you have to earn your spot..;)..... oh and also if your willing to pay for it........scholarships are out there....for both... I wish you and your daughter luck in whatever she decides to do...

Most of the boys in cheer are self taught. They are fearless and a boys body composition and strength is more suited to tumbling than a girls. I have coached cheerleading for over 13 years and most of my boys have walked through the door and within a day or two they have a tuck and then the skies the limit from there. Very few pay for privates. They just throw themselves in the air and go for it. Like you said they then go home and jump around on the couch and come back with a new trick. I know most of my girls would kill to be able to do that.

WOW !!!! That was my question 2...You just blew the word FUN right out of Cheer...I would rather stay where My grandaughter is at and watch her grow, she is my grandaughter NOT an investment....Gezzz its not a stock market watch.....Since when has comp cheer become an investment? WOW

I have a daughter and she will get a scholarship for cheer, however I hope she goes up against all the moms of daughter like the one in the post saying the girls won't get them... it will just make my daughters chance better... so moms of daugther, keep thinking negative and pull your kid out of the ball game for scholarships... I'll get them for mine! :)

I know 4 girls that received full rides...yes grades and talent is key... but girls from the bay area are getting scholarships

Comp cheer or anything else to spend $10,000 or more would be an investment.
Lets see ....braces for your childs teeth ...investment (self esteem)
Dermotoligist...... clear skin..... investment (self esteem)
Cheer..... weight control, time management, skills, leadership ... investment (self esteem)

As for a stock market watch.... pretty damn close.... think out side the box!!!

People just because Comp cheer is an investment does not mean it can't be fun... it can but you don't do it just for the fun in comp cheer. If you just want fun, do pop warner, pal or something less expensive.
When you step on the floor of a good comp team you best have work ethics or it won't be fun.

Great thing about it all is we all have choices.... when it is too intense move somewhere,  where fun is the #1 priority

Boys have there downfalls too!...Most of them can't do splits, scorpions...etc...so I'd really say it's even.....it's hard work for both I would say...DO you ever see boys flying???....I guess by you saying it's harder for girls it irks me....girls can be just as good as boys....They just have to WANT to!  I know plenty of them that can hang with my sons....

We also have girls that come to my house and learn to tuck on the couch, backhandspring on the grass...even fulls...spotted of course but eventually they get it....and then bring it back to the gym....win win for everyone!

Practice, practice, practice wherever that may be.....

Not all boys are like that. That is such a HUGE generalization.  Boys get tumbling faster, but for the most part it never looks as pretty as girls, same as flying. Yes there are exceptions to that statement, but for the most part guys chuck over their tumbling and when they get hurt it usually twice as bad due to lack of technique. MOst of the boys you see with advanced tumbling are ex gymnasts.

Then I guess we're the exception.....but I'd say 9 boys is a hecka lotta boys from the block and not a huge generalization...my kids and their friends all learned to tumble together and all cheered together at one time and are NOT ex gymnasts ...their tumbling is beautiful and is much better than most girls....

They've been hurt as well.....one tore his  ACL twice and the other a broken ankle...BUT there are other reasons for getting hurt not just the lack of technique sometimes they're tired and push themselves to much or could be a fluke bump in the floor or bumped into accidently by another team mate during a routine, or a stunt falling etc....

They've healed and still tumble/cheer just as well!
We have another NCA college ring coming!

Anybody can do anything if they put their minds to it!...girls & boys!

Which colleges give full ride scholarships and how many per year?

I can honestly say a full ride for cheer is very rare. Maybe a partial or even a book stipend but full ride sadly not many. Football is the sport that gives the most full rides. It puts people in the seats and that brings money to the school. FYI golf for girls is the most unused scholarship out there so put a golf club in her hand.

That has been my experience also. I would love to know where all the full rides are. I have heard of a few partial and alot of book stipends but not a full ride. Please let me know where to have my daughter apply.
