High School Vs. All-Star

Do you think it's a good idea to go from All - Star to highschool cheer?  Our highschool cheer team is really not that much cheaper than All-Star ($1300 plus $700 or $800) for a comp team.
Also, any advise from anyone who has gone from All-star to Highschool would be appreciated.

For the social part of it and the whole high school sports & supporting your school, I'm sure it is rewarding.  But for those who are expecting to advance their skills or who enjoy the competitive side of cheerleading, it won't compare to all star.  Depends on the high school too, I can think of a few where there really isn't much difference between the two (but just a few).

i did  both all star and  high school  cheer  throughout high school.. mainly for  2 reasons to  get my letterman  jacket and  my all star  coach  was my high school  coach..  high school  cheer  just  isnt as  intense. not  as competitive and i hated the  whole  minute  long  cheer while competing. but  the ups  are  performing in front  of you friends  as  rallys and  games those  were  fun.  mainly  depends on the person and what style they  like..

As a fan of cheerleading I know that when we go to comps and the high school cheer comes on, i really don't pay any attention. To me it isn't as exciting to watch.

im on my highschool team and allstars.. and i personally get so much crap for being on an allstar team. other kids feel like they are less of a cheerleader than me because of where ive come from or they think i think im better than them.. and it makes them act differently towards me. i love cheering for both teams as there are different benefits and perks of each. like for allstars for instance its more competitive and its more of a lifestyle.. its a great way to advance your skills and all that good stuff. with highschool as its been mentioned in earlier posts.. its the fun of performing in front of the school during rallys and football games and just being involved more with the school as a whole.. i think with highschool cheer its more of a hobbie and your definately not as busy. but if your quitting allstars all together as a whole and thats all you've known.. i dont really know how you'd adjust to the difference, and trust me theres a huge one. it really depends on the person though.. and even the team

good luck with your decision!

Thanks everyone for your advise.  I have a few friends who did all star than once they got into high school, they did highschool their freshman year, didnt like it, and are now coming back to All Stars.  But I'm just wondering if colleges would rather see that someone did highschool cheer because of the involvement in your school, or if it even matters?  I'm not planning on picking a college for cheer and I'm not planning on cheering in college.  I just wasnt sure if colleges even considered these things??

Colleges want to see high school cheer on your resume. They want to know that you know how to lead a crowd. Performing and leading a crowd are actually very different.

My daughter has done both, but only football season for highschool and remained in all star.

This is a great question.  For someone that is interested in cheering at the collegiate level I think its a great idea to cheer at the high school level.  Especially if you want to attend a college that has a big sports background.  There is a big difference cheering games then there is competing two and half minutes of a routine.  Of course the skills that you can gain being the allstar gym will be great for college, but you dont throw double fulls all throughout Big Ten Football games.

Both choices give you alot.  If you have time to do both it might be a good idea.  If you are leaving allstars to go to H.S. Cheer be ready to make a lot of posters and setting up dances, there is alot behind the scenes that people dont think of.  My favorite part of HS Cheer were the games.  They were so fun!  Goodluck with you choice!

Colleges like to see all areas covered (especially the competitive, well known colleges).  I knew a girl who cheered for all-star teams her whole life and thought that was good enough for making a college team.  When she had an interview during her college team try-outs one of the first questions they asked her was, "can you cheer."  Of coarse her response was, "yes I have been doing it for 10 years."  They said..."NO, CAN YOU CHEER AS IN LEAD A CROWD, DO SIDELINES, AND CHEER AND DANCE WITH A BAND?"  She of coarse had to say no and that was pretty much the end of her college cheer try-out.  So instead she did a college all-star team and once her college got a new coach her Junior year, she tried out again for her college team and made it.  I guess it also depends on the coaches as well.

How do you have time for that?  I respect you for it  : )
My cousin does highschool and I do all-star.  She would rather do all-star.  Her school offers competition cheer, however, she tried out in her freshman year and didnt make it (she made the freshman team, just not the comp team).  So she was upset because she said she wanted to do it more for the competitive side, not the football/rally stuff.  Her parents cant afford for her to do All-star.  How do other peoples schools pick who makes the team?  Ours hires outside judges, which sometimes I think is still up to the schools coaches.  What is everyones thoughts on that?

Not really true that you have to cheer in high school in order to make a collegiate team. Many of the guys who who cheer in college were ex wrestlers, football players and track stars. Did they cheer in high school, no and still make competitive cheer teams.

As far as resumes, colleges just want to see you involved in some type of activities. They don't have to be school based, just involvement.

Both are different and offer a variety of opportunities. I find more girls who do high school cheer don't cheer in college and more all star kids cheer in college. Just an observation

If your an all star cheerleader and have always sat on the fence about whether or not to cheer for high school...you have 4 years to try it out....do it before your senior year. And if you don't like it, go back to All Stars. That way you can say "I tried it" and it WAS or WASN'T for me.

Either way, it's a hard decision. Good Luck!

i have something to say about this.

i'm pretty sure every other coach knows what i'm talkin about.

i hate it how all star coaches work their butts off to train little girls to become better athletes and as soon as they get to that "high school" age, they immediately leave the gym to become a "HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADER". and most of the time, its the parents who force their child to do HS Cheer.

i have many problems with these parents.

i hate the popular answer from these kids, "my parents are making me do it."

well, if you're parents are dumb enough to think that High School cheer is goin make their child better, these kids should just run away from home. (JUST KIDDING) but on a serious note.

these kids need to stand up for themselves and say what they want. not just complain about stupid crap like, "i hate high school cheer" but real reasons of why they should stay in all stars. such as: a higher caliber of coaching, equipment, facility, competitions, athletes, wider range of travel, and an overall offers a better program.

and i hate how high school cheerleaders say that they're real cheerleaders cuz they compete on a non-spring surface. OKAY! go ahead a screw up ur legs, and joints doin tucks and layouts morons. why do u think spring floor was introduced into cheerleading, anyone who knows what they're talking about will tell you that it was for safety reasons.

i dislike any parent who forces their child to do HS Cheer just so they can be called a cheerleader in high school. please teach your child the importance of social status over happiness.

i have seen this too.

parents need to realize this as well.

I HAVE SEEN MORE GIRLS WHO DID ALL STARS COMPETING IN COLLEGE THAN MORE HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS.

I HAVE, HOWEVER, SEEN A LARGE AMOUNT OF EX-HIGH SCHOOL CHEELEADERS TAKE MY ORDER AT MANY LOCAL FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS.

just an observation.

AMEN! you hit right on the head! HS Cheer is more of a hobbie in comparison to all stars.

this is the dumbest thing i have ever heard. DANCING with a band, CHEER'in a sideline can be taught so quickly. i'm pretty sure this story is completely fabricated or highly exaggerated. however, in any situation, i know that from any coaches point of view, they're not gonna turn away an awesome athlete with some serious skills just cuz she can't yell.

and i like how DANCING to the beat of a drum, or yelling a RRAPE CHEER in an alley are the only skills attributed to doing high school cheer. GO TEAM!

This is one of those made up questions that is a set up for Dateline NBC, right?  Where's Chris Hansen gonna pop out from?

Because I can't really believe this is a legitimate question from a coach.

I agree with poster 6:08......I have had kids in my program leave once they are HS aged....So annoying, but to each their own. I was a HS cheerleader but we were trained by Pyramids for my Jr and Sr year. So I guess I got the best of both worlds. I have also coached both HS and All Star. HS cheerleading has something that All Star doesn't and vice versa. I cannot compare the two, apples to oranges. If you are into games, rally's and such HS is a perfect place, and depending on the HS you can have a great competition team also.
For you busy kids who do both, does your HS compete? or is that why you are on All Star??? I have been thinking about coaching a HS in our area again, but I don't know that I would have them compete.
