Our gym does give individual awards, and I think that's a good thing. It's not about doing everything perfectly all year or having the highest level of skill, but about the effort that's put forth. I think it's absolutely necessary to reward those athletes that always put fort the extra effort, i.e. the ones who don't miss practice, who are on time, who come to extra tumbling classes to perfect their skills, who don't waste precious practice time gabbing, gossipping, sulking, or distracting others and causing drama. The ones who are always encouraging their teammates and keep a positive attitude and momentum. This is definately the time and place to recognize those athletes at the end of the year, and I think it's evident to the others in the program whey those individuals are being recognized. They are a role model for everyone else.
I guess we have been lucky over the years because honestly, you are describing 80% of our team. The ones who do not work hard, don't show up for practice, etc... etc... are in the minority. I find it hard to believe you only have one person who shows all these qualities you mention, but if that is the case, I agree, you should reward this one person because he/she has certainly put up with a lot!
To add to that it probably isn't just one person, but even if it's a few, do all your other athletes really lack the qualities you mention? Is that the message you want to convey? Just something to think about.
No - it's not just one award - it's several, and most do possess all of these things at most times, but then there are those who do so consistently all of the time and lead and ecourage the rest to also do so. I think the majority of our athletes are top notch, save a few who don't really make the effort for one reason or another. But the awards are for those who hit all those things, consistently, the stand out few on each team who bring the rest up to a level of excellence. They are the leaders in the program who deserve to be rewarded.
