maybe that is why your program doesnt grow amy??? maybe you should look beyond what you feel is right and understand that just because they dont say anything doesnt mean YOU and YOUR program don't send home very hurt and sad children. how sad and how selfish to not think about that. kids dont always express the pain they have to us adults. they keep it bottled up to not ruffle feathers, but you yourself are doing a disservive to the kids in your program period! compeitive cheer is not an individual sport, we all preach that all season to our kids in our programs. what you are doing is making about individuals. YOU CANT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. it doesnt work like that. like the post said "practice what you preach and teach"
Vote OBAMA!!!! He's gonna make everything fair! Health care for all, Education for all, personal recognition deserving or not FOR ALL!
Airborne gives out Most Improved, Coaches Award and a COTY.
I know that many other programs give awards out, when I was a cheerleader my coach gave out these awards and when I have been to any other banquet for other sports they do the same.
I always thought that cheergyms also hands out awards, what gyms do not hand out individual awards?

I would guess most gyms do not hand out individual awards, and should not in my opinion. Is there really one person who stands out to get the top cheerleader of the year award?? Is everyone else subpar compared to this one person? Most improved, again, only one person who you would consider to have improved the most? On our team it's half the girls, at the very least. Just more comments on this.

At Airborne we do recognize a Most Improved and Coaches award from each team , sometimes two from each team, Their is only one COTY. May I ask if you have any other children that participate in other sports. Like I said in an earlier post other sports have an awards banquet. Thank you for giving your side of the situation. It is always great to hear other points of view. I do believe that this is a team sport as we also recongnize a Team of the year, this is based not on wins or loses, but the impovement of the team as a whole and the teamwork that they display towards one another.
I think our sport is different than other sports. It isn't about touchdowns, baskets, goals, and home runs, where you might have someone who is a standout player. In less than three minutes our athletes have to perform a choreographed routine as a team. They are being judged as a team, they win and lose as a team. I think it can cause problems when you single individuals out, problems you may not be aware of. I'm very glad our gym resists this and treats our athletes equally, even at our banquet.

Whatever you do dont let your athletes know they're getting an award beforehand. lol I know my coach wanted to make sure all the athletes that were getting awarded were present so they were informed. While at the ceremony they gave out awards by teams. When my team was called i was so excited that i was getting a special award. The first name was called and it wasnt me, the second still wasnt me, same with the third, forth, and fifth. Finally it came to the last award and it still wasnt me. I was so mad i walked out and went home. About an hour later i start to get calls asking where i was, then a teammate calls and tells me that my coach and the gym owner just went up to give a speech about me, and during the speech they both started to cry, then i was awarded a very special award, but when my name was called i never came to the stage. I felt so bad i wasnt there to see it. It was the worst feeling ever, And that is the only thing i regret in life.
Oh my, how sad. Isn't that how it is though, bummer! Well, congrats that your coaches thought that highly of you.
I could understand being hurt thinking your name is not going to be called, but to be mad and walk out, not even being there to support the names that were called? I think you should feel bad about that too, not just that you missed your moment in the spotlight. Lessons learned.
I am sure this is not the only gym that gives out awards to individuals, so stop putting down another program. To each is their own!! Everyone has a right to chose the gym of their chose, and if the parents are happy that is all that matters.
I appreciate your defending my gym. This place can be so harsh it is nice to hear some positive.
As for the non growth of my gym, My gym grows bigger and bigger each year. My families and members are happy. My coaches are happy and most importantly I am happy, which keeps my gym going. Thank goodness there are so many gyms out there so people may pick the gym that best suits them.
I want to thank every one for their input. I have listened, and will keep my eyes and ears open to see how this years banquet goes.
Anyone else out there want to share what they do for their "end of seasons" so we can get away from the negativity.
At CheerForce we will be having our Awards Banquet once again at Magic Mountain. The cost is 35.00 per person and this includes.
Addmission into Magic Mountain All you can eat catered picnic in the picnic pavillon End of season team plaque with team photo for every cheerleader End of year dvd for every chherleader
We have our video and awards presentation in the Magic Moments Theatre
The best part is if you pre registered your athlete their ticket was FREE
Our gym has an award night. Awards are given out to 1 mermber of each team for Base, back spot, front spot (if you still use one), flyer, dancer, jumper, most improved tumbler, , best (team name) cheerleader (all around cheerleader). And then they pick the best tumbler out of the whole program.
Individual awards don't bother me. Yes it is a team sport and I know each member does what is needed to make that routine complete, but sometimes you have girls that do outshine more than others. For example, who would you give an award to, flyer who just gives up and lets their stunt come down or a flyer that fights to keep that stunt up. I vote for the flyer that fights to keep the stunt up.
You have all types of people on a team, some more dedicated than others, those that give 110% of themselves should be recognized.

I would agree with this if you had two flyers, one that fights to keep the stunt up and one that gives up. But there are usually four or five per team. So when you reward the one, you are basically saying that the others are inferior. Doesn't make for good team bonding, we have found. To each his own of course, but I'm still glad we don't do it.
The example was for illustration only. I was not illuding to the fact that if you stuck your stunts all year that the flyer wasn't in the running. There are so many variables. Its not a perfect award system but it is one that the gym I belong to adopted. It doesn't seem to affect the kids being that they know how this is how the awards are done. For the most part, I would have to say they are dead on with who gets what award. You can't please everyone.
See that is where the probelm lies in the director/coach who even says anything about someoine outshining another,,,,,,,, that is horrible to say. its a team sport period and your goal is to make all your athletes shine and make them feeli like they shine. who rude to think that. in any case i am si thankful my gym does not have the same menatlity that you have.
maybe your flier guves up because of that same mentality you have , she can never be good enough shame on you
I think this post is a little harsh, but for the most part I do agree. For example, my daughter is a base. She is a good one and works hard. But you know what? So are 80% of the others. If our gym awarded one person for basing (and you can apply this to flyers and tumblers too), my daughter would feel hurt. She may not show it, but she would. On our teams I really could not single any one person for any of the awards you mention, and I think that is a good thing.
Our gym does give individual awards, and I think that's a good thing. It's not about doing everything perfectly all year or having the highest level of skill, but about the effort that's put forth. I think it's absolutely necessary to reward those athletes that always put fort the extra effort, i.e. the ones who don't miss practice, who are on time, who come to extra tumbling classes to perfect their skills, who don't waste precious practice time gabbing, gossipping, sulking, or distracting others and causing drama. The ones who are always encouraging their teammates and keep a positive attitude and momentum. This is definately the time and place to recognize those athletes at the end of the year, and I think it's evident to the others in the program whey those individuals are being recognized. They are a role model for everyone else.
