Thnakfully that has happened to us very rarely. Most times when a competition cancels the owners know about it in time enough to schedule another one. In the times where it has been last minute (and again that has been very rare) they will refund it, or put it towards the parent's outstanding bill...after telling them of course.
I think this needs to be an area where both gyms and competition companies tighten up. Too many competition companies are canceling events and sending teams scrambling to find new events at the last minute. In fairness it also must be noted that most of the canceled events are locals and regionals who did not have enough teams enter and paid by the competition companies cut off date to make the event feasible. I mean after all they do have to pay for the venue, vendors, trophies, equipment rental, salaries for judges, staff, etc.You can not do that and remain solvent with only ten teams registering and three having sent in their money by the cut off date.
JMO but this is another victim of the gyms that only want to compete/win at Nationals...hence why so many smaller companies have so many Nationals. Because they know..because they answer the phones and talk with gym owners/coaches looking for new competitions that many gyms won't come unless it is a National. I know that is not what the supporters of "less competitions and bigger true nationals mean better/stronger competition and better results" want to hear, but it is the truth from the business perspective.

Good points..all of them, but we decided not to attend a competition (not that it was canceled as you are talking about here) and did not replace it with another competition. I had forgotten that we were scheduled to go until I received the credit on my account!

I think it all depends if you are billed per competition or if the competition fees are included in your season costs. Some gyms have a fee structure that includes competition fees. For example a range of competitions that might be attended but not necessarily an exact amount due to scheduling conflicts or injuries or whatever. So if your gym bills per competition and you paid for a comp that was cancelled then yes you should receive a refund. If you paid a lump season cost that included fees for a range of competition, say for example 5 - 7 and you went to 6 than I would doubt they would give a refund. Sounds like your gym has you pay per competition and they are on top of their game. Thats great.
We get a refund, but I would rather have a competition because we spend all that money and all year so we can compete X numbers of times. It is sad when we miss one. I know that sometimes it is a scheduling issue, but I want to see the girl perform for all that time and money I spent at the gym.
Yes our parents usually know at tryouts what the entire cost will be for the year, including competition fees and hotel fees. This way they have plenty of times to fund raise, get sponsors, budget or do what is necessary to stay on top of it themselves. Amazingly we have not in 4 years have to pay more than was announced for any competition...if anything we had a couple that was cheaper!
What if you're told you will attend 8-11 comps, but only attend 5...Do you thing an refund is due?
I guess it would depend if they were 1 or 2 day comps. Registration fees are quite different for 1 and 2 day competitions. Almost twice as much I think.
