I'M SERIOUSLY GROWING HATE FOR THIS INDUSTRY

Just wanted to share a bit. I've been coaching for some years now and I don't know if anyone else shares my feelings regarding this subject, but I'm getting to the point where I want to quit coaching because everything and everyone has gotten so fake. I began cheering and began coaching years ago because I LOVE THIS SPORT!!!! I love coaching and I LIVE for those 2 minutes and 30 seconds the kids perform. But hearing my poor kids speak at our gym of how our gym and our kids get bashed left and right, and seeing coaches give each other dirty looks and talk smack about each other is just plain irritating and BS. Don't get me wrong, I have met some of the nicest people in this industry, but to hear that there is so much hate, NOT EVEN HEALTHY RIVALRY, it's just hate from one gym to another and to come on this "MESSAGE BOARD" and read all kinds of nasty things about gyms is ridiculous!!! Why does this board even exist when it's not here for constructive criticism...DO YOU ALL REALIZE THAT OUR KIDS ARE THE ONES ON THESE MESSAGE BOARDS AND WHEN YOU'RE TALKING SMACK ABOUT THEIR GYMS YOU'RE RUINING THEIR LOVE FOR THE SPORT AND INSTIGATING HATE AMONG GYMS....

As much as I love this sport and working with the kids....there are too many things I've experienced and see and hear that MAKE me hate it....to the point of quitting!!!cry

I agree, there's this one coach who when competition season comes around, acts as if she's our BEST friend (Coaches' best friend) and starts asking us all these questions about our teams... yet when the season is over she disappears and not even a hello...fake?... play the game?....whatever...
sad but true.

This post makes me so sad.   I agree that the hatered is unecessary.  There are gyms out there that drill the hate in to their kids heads and it is so sad.

In my area the hate is driven by parents or angry coaches.  A angry parent or coach will leave a gym, youth program or HS and open a new gym.  Then they teach their kids it is ok to hate the program they had left.

I bought my gym from someone who was failing miserably and had left another gym to open her own after a huge falling out with the other owner.  When I took over I had to fight to teach my kids hate was not ok, and we reached out to the program who our old owner "hated" or who hated us.  It is still and uphill battle and message boards like this one just keep the hate going.

I was at a competition recently and I was in the bathroom with like 100 cheerleaders and I heard a cheerleader talking to another cheerleader from what sounded like her old team.  She said "this is why I left you guys, you moved down a level and you still suck"  Then the other girl said "I know our coaches are so stupid, this is why I am leaving next year.  We do suck"  Then they both proceeded to talk about how "fat" and "stupid" their coaches were.  I was shocked.  I left that bathroom hoping and praying my kids didn't talk about me like that.  I couldn't belieive it.

My other beef is that some of these posts are by parents who are living vicariously through their kids.  I recently read a post that implied that anything under level 5 is not good enough.  I am 99% positive this was posted by a parent.  I was horrified to read something like that, knowing my lower level kids get on here and read every word posted.  My kids get bashed at school by rival gym members and have to constantly defend our program and our reasons for not having a level 5, and for them to have to read it on here also, is sad.

It makes me sad that a talented coach would consider quitting because of the ignorance of others.  I hope that you can keep your head up and work through all the negative.  Hopefully one day us coaches who belieive in talent, in our kids and in being positive even in competition will be the majority and not have to hear all the unecessary "smack" that is thrown around within this sport.

I absolutely agree, AND TO HEAR someone, coach, parent, kid, ANYONE state that anything below level 5 is not good enough?!?!?! UH!!!REALITY CHECK MISSY!!! YOU WEREN'T THROWING FULLS AND DOUBLES OUT OF YOUR MOTHER'S WOMB!??!?!

We all had to go through levels of training so at one point in all of our lives we were ALL a level 1,2,3 or 4 cheerleader...AND FOR THOSE of us that have made it and become a level 5 cheerleader, you're making us look bad by saying something as ignorant as that....  I know our youth kids and our junior and lower level senior kids work just as hard if not harder than the level 5 kids because they want to improve and become better cheerleaders....

IF anything I've noticed that the lower level cheerleaders work harder because they want to IMPROVE a lot more than our level 5 cheerleaders who THINK THEY KNOW IT ALL and feel they're at the top of their game but in reality most of them don't understand that THERE'S ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.

Anyhow, just my two cents.

Good things happen to good people. I hope my child's coach takes the high road like you seem to.
Those people that are in this for the wrong reasons will be found out eventually. Good prevails over evil as they say.

Don't hate the industry because of the negative people.  There are negative nellys in everything you do.  I always hear about "drama" in cheerleading, but it can be everywhere.  Those negative people just happened to choose cheerleading.

Fortunately, they are a minority.  I've been around all stars for 13 years.  I've met some absolutely fantastic people and a handful of jerks.  It's just that the jerks are able to draw more attention to themselves than the others.

If you aren't happy with cheerleading because of it, I've got some bad news: its the same everywhere you go.  No matter what type of business or profession you enter, there will be a handful of jerks that wll dominate your time with their negativity.  So you might as well stick around and help make THIS industry better.  We don't need to lose the good ones.

Message boards are known for allowing negative nellys to prosper.  For all we know, it could be ONE person posting all the negative comments on this board.  I help moderate two other boards and I know for a fact that people will obtain multiple screen names just to argue with themselves.

So read every post with a HUGE grain of salt.  If they're bashing your gym, first ask yourself if it's true.  If so, then they helped you see a problem that now you can solve.  If it's not, then your words and actions will allow others to see the truth.

All star cheerleading has been a positive factor in thousands of lives throughout the US and the world.  Even with all of the problems, there are very few activities that can offer so many advantages in one package.

Don't leave because of the negative nellys.  Talk to some of your friends that remain optimistic.  Help each other see that there is more good than bad.

Save the cheerleader, save the World.

Thanks for this post AceDad, it is so true, you will find bashing in any sport.  If you let that stop you or frustrate you, they win.   There is more good in our sport than bad, more positive than negative.  And remember these are just kids.  Kids will be kids.  They may say things without thinking, they will learn.

There are some great people in the industry and some miserable angry folks that must be awful to others to feel better. Pity them and stay focused on the kids.

I have seen first hand where a coach  encouraged her cheerleaders to be disrepectful to visiting  cheerleader & adults/parent that came to the gym for a private. She literally had them roll their eyes and slam a door in the our face!

The was a woman old enough to know better, not a young kid. Great example for teenage girls, they acted just like their coach rude.  I bet the girls in the bath room were talking about her.
