First let me say, as usual I felt California Allstars routines looked awesome this weekend at Spirit Sports. I was once again very impressed with all their teams, great choreography and clean routines.I was however extremely disappointed when I was unable to see the complete Jr. 5 routine today because I had to keep burying my head to avoid the man blowing the canned air-horn behind it REPEATEDLY.
I was one row in front of this man and 3-4 seats down and when the routine was over my one ear was ringing!!!Now I probably wouldnt have posted this until I was extremely disturbed by the fact that the two people seated directly (and I mean directly) in front of this man were an elderly couple in their late 70s that I had just met.The seating is not raised and the rows are so close together at this event that there was no avoiding this horn. The man continued to blow this even when we were all cowering and grabbing our ears.
Ill admit I never have been a fan of these horns but they are not banned from events so I have no say in the matter. However, I would like to ask that people practice common courtesy and think about those around them. This event had priority seating for teams, go up there and blow it in your own parents ears.Or at least aim the thing straight up in the air and not at the back of our heads. It really was ridiculous!!!
yeah i noticed their excessive horn use when i was watching one of their teams. usually people just blow the horn when all the stunts hit or something good is going on, but i don't think that horn ever stopped. i know their routines are good but makes me wonder if all that noise and crowd support pumps up the judges too and affects their scoring
The seating did not allow for this, you can't just get up and move when a routine is going on because then nobody can see from behind or I would have, plus you would have to trample all over them.
I posted this because I felt bad for the couple who came to watch their grandchild. People need to pay better attention of their sorroundings and show some respect and common courtesy.
You are so right!!!!! Oh my gosh are you right, Grandparents have no idea what they are walking into a lot of times, and how terrible would that be to be stuck with someone doing that, I bet these people would feel the same if it was their mother or father. People are so shameless sometimes.
I'd like to comment, but first let me say that I am not from CA All Stars.
I just wanted to say that I am a huge fan of all star cheer and love the atmosphere that goes with it, including horns. I agree 100% that fans using horns should observe their surroundings before going letting lose. I find them exciting though.
HOWEVER, being one who is guilty of using horns to the extreme I wanted to point out that sometimes in the heat of competition (healthy positive competition) sometimes people are just excited and really don't mean any harm or disrespect and certainly don't mean to be rude. There have been times after competitions that I've read message boards and people have complained about various gyms' excessive use of horns AND I have also read plenty that said they loved the spirit of it all.
Maybe this is where gym owners who truly love the spirit of their parents, friends and fans can remind their parents to be considerate with horns. Most gyms send out emails or fliers reminding their families to bring noise makers such as horns. That's an excellent opportunity to establish some guidelines, such as using horns before the team goes on then only during favorite sections of the performance (once or twice), then afterward to celebrate a job well done.
Just a suggestion that might help to keep everyone happy.
While I don't like airhorns at all and think they should be banned from all competitions, I like that Anon1209 is coming up with helpful solutions *for the competitions that do allow them*.
I do however think that the specific gym's name could have been left off, especially since this isn't something that just one gym does.
I'm so sorry for using the gym name as I am fairly new to this stuff! I truly meant no harm. Next time I will be more careful to keep it more annonymous however then this gym doesn't know it's them. Someone also suggested I could e-mail the gym directly and I can try that next time. so please forgive me I really am not stirring up problems. I was just hoping they could ask their parents to use the viewing area next time. Of course depending on the venue this may not be possible but usually in other venues, teams get the oppurtunity to sit more together and it is easier to move away if it bothers you. Or even stadium seating it probably wouldn't be so bad.
I truly respect CA and congratulations on their bids. I have high hopes to see them represent California well Worlds.
I HATE AIR HORNS. Honestly, when I've been at a competition for 10 hours straight, the last thing I want to hear is an air horn in my ear at 8 o'clock at night, whether I'm 2, 22, or 202. It's just unnecessary. I think every one should hop on the trend bandwagon of clapping out a whole routine, or pieces of a routine, if you like the section their doing or if you like the whole thing. Clapping always gets me pumped up. Blow horns just give me a migraine.
Seriously, consider it. Clapping is sufficient.

I don't know what to add to that, so I'm just going to say: yeah, ditto. I hate air horns.

Airhorns should be banned, PERIOD! I was at this competition and there were a few gyms that had parents that use them. I can honestly say, I HATE them and I am disappointed in any gym that supports them. They hurt everyones ears and can possibly damage eardrums. The venues are loud enough and noisemakers of any kind other than clapping your hands and using your voice should be banned. You can be supportive of your team by making signs, using props, and clapping and yelling for your team. Nothing more is needed. They were meant for outdoor venues, NOT indoor ones. Can we please band together to stop them.
I know our gym has parents that love the blowhorns and think they are the best thing EVER! But, it's really not up to us coaches what our parents bring into the competition, so companies need to ban them. And until they do, people will continue to bring them. And it sucks!!!!

I just wanted to say good job to your level 5 team this weekend. They have great flexibility! Are you coming up for gssa?

Please bring noisemakers, shakers, air horns, cowbells, whistles, sirens and clappers. You only need one. J If you dont have an air horn or some kind of noisemaker yet, please purchase one.
Crowd appeal is 10% of the score sheet. Your support factors into the final score. Make an insane amount of noise throughout the routine, especially, in the dance!!

If this was at their website, then the parents did not disappoint the gym. Really, the MUSIC was blaring. Then to top it off with the horns, URGGGGG.
