Why is it that California couldn't have just been beat fair and square by the other teams? I don't buy into the fact that the judges were biased against them. As it has been mentioned, there is a very close relationship between CA and James Speed (Spirit Sports). He has coached many of the CA coaches and CA continues to send many of its atheletes to Louisville once they move on to college. If anything, I think there is a bias towards large coed teams in general, not just California allstars. I'm glad to see all girl teams taking the bids.
I think some of us are crossing our posts up unintentionally. Some are specifically speaking to an event this year in California, others are speaking about biases and judging issues in general...not necessarily at that event. I spoke about a two specific events..one a Spirit Sports event last year on the East Coast where those same announcing biases favoring the "major programs" were noticed, and the other an independent event about 3-4 years ago.
Just an FYI..the announcer was from New York and had no idea who California All Stars were or any other team for that matter..I happen to know this beacuse he was a friend of mine from college that happened to know someone on staff and got the job.
It seems to me that more than anywhere else, the teams, coaches and parents in cali seem to over analyze things that they are not fully educated on. Cheerleading is subjective just as gymnastics and ice skating and actually the judges at most events (I can not speak for those that I have not judged for or attended) are bound by some pretty structured guidelines and now compter scoing comes into play as well. Judges can not just decide who they want to win and in some cases they are just as shocked as most with the outcome. I went online and found the scoring information on the spirit sports website and it was very clearly laid out for all to see. It seems to me that they are trying to make it very fair for coaches who are knowledgable and go online to research the event that they are competing at to do very well. It all comes back to coaching and how these kids are coached.
Please take a step back and look at the big picture rather than trying to find excuses for why things happen. Everyone is taking away the thunder and the joy from teh two teams that did get the pais bids 9and in my opinion deserved them just as much as anyone else) and also the other kids that won all of the other divsions! Those kids work just as hard to acheive what they did that weekend so I would like to be the FIRST on this website to say GOOD JOB and CONGRATS to those kids and coaches!

Your right, I personnally thought it was the best comp our teams have ever been to. The judging was the best. The way they took care of the teams and their staff was great. We will be going back for sure. My gym is in California and I thought the teams that took the bids were well deserved. When they say the cleanest routines, they were not kidding. Way to run a successful comp Spirit Sports.

This announcer gave much more enthusiastic intro's to California's team than any other, whether he knew who they were or not. When he announced CA's coed team (5 or international, don't remember) he went as far as to say... "Everybody stay down, cause we all wanna see this one!" People were up and down for the entire competition, but that was the only team that everyone wanted to see (according to him)

WOW!!! I was there and didn't notice this thing called "favortism."

ive been at comps where i thought the announcer heald a name longer or that it seemed they were saying more for one team than another, but then realized sometmes that it is about how the crowd is reacting. or even that they are the last team to perform or they are just finding different things to say through out announcing them. maybe they did hear great things about the team and the excitement about seeing the team. but the announcer has no say in the judging. so im sure it doesnt reflect on the scoring or anything. my point is, it probably isnt favoritism and honestly even if it is the announcers favorite it doesnt reflect scoring at all. i think the announcers have a hard job trying to be enthusastic and keep it interseting too. really maybe it was how the crowd was reaccting that made this particular announcer say what they said. when we are at comps with power it seem like the announcers are always saying a little something extra but we all know its because thier parents are up on their feet people are rushing the stage to see them and lets be honest they have a great reputation and so we are all waiting to see what they are about to do. i never think oh wow dod you hear how they said their name. just an example of what goes on every where. it gets us excited in the satnds and shoot when they are all up with the thunder sticks you can see why it would make the announcer excited too

I don't think there was favortism from the judges. But, I remember thinking, that the announcer sure gave more enthusiastic intros to california allstars than he did the other teams. Then more than 1 person commented on it on this board, so I know it wasn't just me.
....and what about the "one word" announcement. "POWER!!". Come on people get off it all ready. If you were there, then you all know what I'm talking about. He had a job to do and he did. Look for something else to complain about will ya cuz as sure as the sun will shine tomorrow; you will have something else to bash on.
Come on people, surely you have something better to do then concentrate on who the announcer may be giving a louder or longer announcement to. I was at Spirit Sports and I noticed no such thing. Some people can be swayed by the power of suggestion so I would not put to much weight on so and so also though California Allstars got better announcements. If they were really playing favorites the large coed team would have for sure received the all paid bid. (As I feel they should have). Just because a team is talented does not give others a right to try and tear them down.
