Here was my problem at NCA Dallas! I had just walked in and a team was performing. So I stood back to wait until they stopped. I hadn't been there 2 seconds when the Security "Nazi's" told me to "Sit Down"!! I told them that as soon as the team was finished performing, then I would sit down. And besides, I needed to "Locate" my seat before I could sit down. Otherwise I would be walking around aimlessly trying to find my seat in the "Ocean" of seats!! Oh yeah, did I mention that my eyes hadn't even adjusted to coming into the dark venue from the outside where it was bright?????? So, after explaining that to the "Nazi"....He said "Well, do it quick"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Geeezzzzz! What do they expect???????????????
I guess I should have made myself a bit more clear. I make my kids stay when they are asked to be on the mat or around the mat for the awards cermony. I feel it is disrespectful when an entire team walks off the mat because they got their trophy or not. If the kids are not asked to come to mat for the awards ceremony it is a bit different.
I guess we've been fortunate, I've never seen anyone leave the mat or the stage before the award ceremony was over. The stands, yes.
Regarding the NCA Dallas situation I think they might have just wanted you to find a seat anywhere until the performance was over just so you aren't blocking anyone's view. Once the performance was over then you could find a permanent seat. I wish all competitions would do that just because I always miss some part of a routine at a crowded competition with people walking around or standing during performances. I can see where it would be difficult if it's too dark to see to find a seat.
WHAT IS CHEER ETIQUETTE ? MANY SEEM TO HAVE NO CLUE. THE #1 PROBLEM IS PEOPLE GETTING UP IN THE MIDDLE OF A ROUTINE. THIS IS NOT ONLY DISTRACTING BUT RUDE. JUST BECAUSE IT IS NOT YOUR CHILD OR TEAM PERFORMING, IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU SHOULD BLOCK THE VIEW OF SOMEONE WHO IS TRYONG TO WATCH. IT IS GETTING TO BE A REAL PROBLEM LATELY. WHEN A TEAM IS FINISHED PERFORMING, THEN GET UP AND LEAVE, SAME AS FOR RETURNING TO YOUR SEAT. CHEER FOR ALL TEAMS AND REMEMBER YOU MAY HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER OF ANOTHER TEAM BEHIND YOU THAT MAY OVER HEAR YOUR NEGATIVE COMMENTS. IT WOULD BE NICE IF ALL COACHES AND GYM OWNERS COULD TALK TO THEIR TEAMS AND FAMILIES ABOUT THIS COMMON COURTESY.
I agree, you are so right. It just makes since. Sit down while all these hardworking athletes perform. Really, it is only a 2 1/2 minute routine. And just because it may not be my team I still enjoy watching the athletes perform. I will make sure we put that in our paperwork at our gym. Great Post! Also, these are kids for crying outloud, there is NEVER any reason to talk down a program and the kids performing in a negative way. You are right, their families might be sitting near you. Be nice, it is all about the kids.
Why should gym owners be in charge of us parents? We are adults, are we not? Perhaps we should take responsibility for our own actions.
They (gym owners) don't have to be responsible, just mention and remind members and parents of the problem at hand of common courtesy and ask for respect for others. Some parents just DON"T get it! After all it DOES reflect back on the gym when something like this happens.... bottom line. I think people (yes parents included) get caught up in whatever is going on... such as, "Susie needs money for the snack bar" as their child in standing in up blocking spectators view. Trust me, this happens all of the time and many of the parents just go along and continue to talk to the child while they are still standing blocking views, INSTEAD of telling them to SIT DOWN and wait until the performance is over.
It doesn't hurt the gym owners to say something to their gym family. You can put it in the paperwork and maybe some of them will listen. Honestly, I would much rather here it from my gym on paperwork then having someone scream at me to sit down at a comp. And for myself, I don't like telling other people to sit down.
It's really okay to ask people to sit down. Believe it or not in all the excitement most parents who stand up to cheer for their kids are completely unaware they are blocking spectators who also want to see the performance. Just a tap on the back will do the trick; believe me, they would want you to watch their child too!
when girls change in plain view. I understand most girls wear shorts and sports bras, but there are little kids and teenage boys walking around. I guess I'm just a little too modest to do it myself.
when girls take over the entire sink area to put on make up. and the worst is the glitter! people never clean it up! i feel bad for who ever has that job.
and the absolute biggest pet peeve of mine, is during "fun and game" time, and the older kids get on the floor and shake a little too much of what their momma gave them, if you know what i mean. i like going out there and dancing, but i usually bring some of the tiny/mini team members with me, and they just LOVE copying what the big kida are doing.
