The holiday is fast approaching and gyms will be closing for thier winter breaks. I know some are heading for vegas, but overall this board has slowed down quite a bit. So I wanted to bring up a topic that is not cheer related. Just curious what others think. It seems it has become politically incorrect to say Merry Christmas. At schools teachers are instructed to say Happy Holidays. They are told they cannot say Merry Christmas. If you go to a store, restaurant, etc. it's the samething. They all say Happy Holidays. Some government and private bussiness will not even let thier employess put up Christmas decorations. What is so wrong with MERRY CHRISTMAS. What do you think? Do you think it is starting to go to far?
I can see it now soon they will be changing the lyrics to all my favorite Christmas Carols.
I'm Dreaming of a White Holiday Have a Holly Jolly Holiday Silver Bells Silver Bells it's Holiday time in the city... Rockin Around the Holiday Tree HO HO HO Happy Holiday
And did you hear that someone in Australia started a rant that suggested Santa shouldn't say HO HO HO because children might see it as a derogatory comment toward women? He is encouraged to say HA HA HA....
no kidding. People are so sensitive. If someone said happy Hanukah to me I would say thank you or Happy Hanukah back to them, although I do not celebrate that holiday. Embrace the differences instead of trying to hide them.
Lowes was selling "Family Trees" instead of "Christmas Trees", and there was something in the news recently about some city saying only white lights could be used on (downtown?) buildings because green and red were Christmas colors and could be offensive to some. Yes it's gone way to far.
Yes, it has gone too far. I am not a religious person. The word Christmas may have derived from religion, but it has come to mean so much more. As long as others don't try to tell me how I should be celebrating it, I will continue to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. People take things too literally!

As a Jew this really bugs me. Those buying Christmas trees are celebrating Christmas...why call it a "family tree" or "holiday tree"?! It's not as if those NOT celebrating Christmas are going to buy them because of the name change! That's just ridiculous. And like what someone else said about christmas carols changing lyrics...those songs are obviously for Christmas...why try and make them something they're not?!
I do think that wishing Happy Holidays is more appropriate however I have heard enough "Merry Christmas's" in my life to not get even close to offended. Obviously whoever is saying it means it in a positive way so it does not bother me. Though it can sometimes create alienation depending on the situation.
I sometimes find that my friends try to hard to be "pc" about Christmas...they'll mention it or say how they don't know what to get me for Christmas and will then look embaressed and apologize saying "Oh sorry, I meant Hanukkah". I don't think they realize that I've grown up in this environment and while I do not personally celebrate Christmas I have definitely participated in others' celebrations and I obviously know that they do celebrate it and I am not offended by it! Just as I know they are not offended by my celebrating Hanukkah or any other more important Jewish holidays.
I agree, it's become too PC. Christmas is Christmas. I'm not religous, but I celebrate Christmas and as said above, it's become more about the holiday season than it is about religion.
Actually, I'm a teacher and we are allowed to say Merry Christmas...and yes, I do teach at a public school. I know the reason for schools is because there are some children who do not celebrate Christmas so we do not want them to think that Christmas is the norm. So if we know a child does indeed celebrate Christmas, we can say it to them. But, we are not supposed to decorate for Christmas, instead, all of the holidays. I think it is only fair. We want our children to feel as though they fit in, and it isn't their fault if their family doesn't celebrate Christmas.
Happy Holidays covers everything. Think of it. If you are a 7 year old and you are in a room of other children excited about Christmas, along with your teacher, and you didn't celebrate it, how would you feel? Left out?
Sorry, this is probably confusing....but it's Friday!
I think people need to get a life. Should we get rid of Rudolph because he is helping Santa deliver presents on Christmas day? For the scrooges out there, is that much of your life dedicated to bashing (not Dasher!) Christmas Day??? Across the board, do people have to be so caught up in your egocentric lives to ruin Christmas?? Whether you are catholic or another religion it is about celebrating family, togetherness and just plain old fun. Who cares if a store sells green and red bulbs too? If you are one of the persons that are protesting the "Christmas" thing then you REALLY need to take a look at the miserableness of your own life to take away the joy from many!!!!!!!!

What? That's ridiculous. We all know the 2 words that are reference are spelled differently. The derogatory comment is spelled "hoe" not "ho". For example: If you're walking down the street and you hear a guy yell out of his car window at a girl " What's up Hoe" That would be derogatory. If you see Santa Claus ringing a bell yelling Ho,Ho,Ho that would not be derogatory!!!!!! Let's get real!!!!!!!!!

All those people that are protesting Christmas make sure you demand to your employer that you WANT to work and you can not accept the paid holiday off. That is your right as well. Funny how I have never seen someone do this.
I refuse to spend my Christmas dollars at a store that say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Chrismas (Walmart and Lowes are just 2) this is my personal Boycott maybe if enough join in we can change their minds for next year.
